In his most famous book, The Souls of Black Folk, he explored what he called the problem of the twentieth century-the problem of the color line. Du Bois's early conviction that immediate political and economic equality was the only acceptable goal eventually morphed into a belief in voluntary segregation as a means to achieving that end-a controversial position in some quarters. Concerned about oppressed people everywhere, Du Bois advocated for the liberation of blacks around the world, holding a series of Pan-African Congresses beginning in 1919.
