Book excerpt: A NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER Another thrilling domestic suspense novel from the New York Times bestselling author of The Couple Next Door and Not a Happy Family “A Stranger in the House will have you sleeping with the lights on for weeks.” —Bustle “Smart and suspenseful . . . you'll never see the ending coming.” —PureWow In this neighborhood, danger lies close to home. Karen and Tom Krupp are happy—they’ve got a lovely home in upstate New York, they’re practically newlyweds, and they have no kids to interrupt their comfortable life together. But one day, Tom returns home to find Karen has vanished—her car’s gone and it seems she left in a rush. She even left her purse—complete with phone and ID—behind. There's a knock on the door—the police are there to take Tom to the hospital where his wife has been admitted. She had a car accident, and lost control as she sped through the worst part of town. The accident has left Karen with a concussion and a few scrapes. Still, she’s mostly okay—except that she can’t remember what she was doing or where she was when she crashed. The cops think her memory loss is highly convenient, and they suspect she was up to no good. Karen returns home with Tom, determined to heal and move on with her life. Then she realizes something’s been moved. Something’s not quite right. Someone’s been in her house. And the police won't stop asking questions. Because in this house, everyone’s a stranger. Everyone has something they’d rather keep hidden. Something they might even kill to keep quiet.

Book excerpt: A stunning new psychological thriller set in past and present-day Cumbria from the award-winning author of the Dalziel and Pascoe series. Things move slowly in the tiny village of Illthwaite, but that’s about to change with the arrival of two strangers. Sam Flood is a young Australian post-grad en route to Cambridge. Miguel Madero is a Spanish historian in flight from a seminary. They have nothing in common and no connection, except that they both want to dig up bits of the past that some people would rather keep buried. Sam is looking for information about her grandmother who left Illthwaite courtesy of the child migrant scheme four decades earlier. The past Mig is interested in is more than four centuries old. They meet in the village pub, the Stranger House, a remnant of the old Illthwaite Priory. They can find nothing to agree on. Sam believes that anything that can’t be explained by math isn’t worth explaining; Mig sees ghosts; Sam is a fun-loving, experienced young woman; Mig is a 26-year-old virgin. But once their paths cross, they become increasingly entangled as they pursue what at first seem to be separate quests, finding out the hard way who to trust and who to fear in this ancient village. The action is fast, there are clashes physical and metaphysical, and shocks natural and supernatural, as the tension mounts to an explosive climax. But fans of Reginald Hill’s will not be surprised to find a few laughs along the way. And very loyal fans might even recognize a ghost from the very distant past. . . .

Book A Stranger in My Own House

Download or read book A Stranger in My Own House written by Bonnie Hinman and published by Morgan Reynolds Publishing. This book was released on 2005 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the founding members of the NAACP and the first editor of its influential publication, The Crisis, W. E. B. Du Bois had a tremendous impact on the fledgling civil rights movement. He began his career in the late nineteenth century as a scientist but was soon swept up in the growing fight against discrimination and racism. Du Bois clashed with other black leaders, including Marcus Garvey and Booker T. Washington, establishing himself as a fiery, independent personality. In his most famous book, The Souls of Black Folk, he explored what he called the problem of the twentieth century-the problem of the color line. Du Bois's early conviction that immediate political and economic equality was the only acceptable goal eventually morphed into a belief in voluntary segregation as a means to achieving that end-a controversial position in some quarters. Concerned about oppressed people everywhere, Du Bois advocated for the liberation of blacks around the world, holding a series of Pan-African Congresses beginning in 1919. He eventually joined the Communist Party and gave up his American citizenship. He died in Ghana, Africa, a powerful leader and unique thinker to the end. Book jacket.

Book The Stranger as My Guest

Download or read book The Stranger as My Guest written by Michel Agier and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2021-01-14 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The migration crisis of recent years has elicited a double response: on the one hand, many states have responded by tightening border controls, in an attempt to restrict population movements, while on the other hand many citizens have responded by welcoming new arrivals, offering them shelter, food and whatever help they could provide. By so doing, they have re-awakened an old form of anthropology that was long-considered to be dead – that of hospitality. In this book, Agier develops an original anthropology of hospitality that starts from the reality of hospitality as a social relationship, albeit an asymmetrical one, in which each party has rights and duties. He argues that, with the decline of state and religious support, hospitality is now making a comeback at individual and municipal levels but these local initiatives, while important, are insufficient to respond to the scale of migration in the world today. We need a new hospitality policy for the modern era, one that will regard hospitality as a right rather than a favour and will treat the stranger as a guest rather than as an alien or an enemy. This timely and original book will be of great interest to students and scholars in anthropology, sociology and the social sciences generally, and to anyone concerned with migration and refugees in the world today.

Book The Stranger in Early Modern and Modern Jewish Tradition

Download or read book The Stranger in Early Modern and Modern Jewish Tradition written by Catherine Bartlett and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2021-07-15 with total page 303 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Throughout history, Jews have often been regarded, and treated, as “strangers.” In The Stranger in Early Modern and Modern Jewish Tradition, authors from a wide variety of disciplines discuss how the notion of “the stranger” can offer an integrative perspective on Jewish identities, on the non-Jewish perceptions of Jews, and on the relations between Jews and non-Jews in an innovative way. Contributions from history, philosophy, religion, sociology, literature, and the arts offer a new perspective on the Jewish experience in early modern and modern times: in contact and conflict, in processes of attribution and allegation, but also self-reflection and negotiation, focused on the figure of the stranger.

Book When Your Home Is on Fire

Download or read book When Your Home Is on Fire written by Kola Ogidi and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2012-08 with total page 89 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The family is the basic building block of society. The family unit, though a small part, is a very important part of society. Good homes mean a good society, and the reverse is true in all cultures. This is why the health of the family is a matter of importance to all societies worldwide. Unfortunately, the family is the most endangered unit of modern society. It is assaulted by divorce, emptiness, poverty, and many other ills. In this book, When Your Home is on Fire written by my son in the Lord, Pastor Kola Ogidi, the author shows us that there are many beautiful houses that do not contain beautiful homes. This, unfortunately, is the tragedy of the 21st Century civilized society. Having failed to build the home front, everything else that modern man has built is crumbling right before his eyes! Now, all right-thinking people worldwide are calling attention to the need to strengthen the family as a fundamental weapon towards the eradication of the various social and moral ills of today's society. That is where this book comes in. Pastor Ogidi has, in this masterpiece, shed refreshing light on the marriage institu-tion. He has diagnosed the causes of fire in homes. Then he went ahead to proffer practic-al, time-tested solutions to myriad marital problems. In doing so, he did not resort to mere social or psychological counseling. His therapy for burning homes is deliberately biblical at the core. And I think this is the high point of the book, for the word of God is sure to prosper where all else has failed. The Bible says, So shall my word be that goeth forth out of my mouth: it shall not return unto me void, but it shall accomplish that which I please, and it shall prosper in the thing whereto I sent it. Isaiah 55:11 That is why I recommend this book to all persons whose homes are presently under fire. Through this book, God shall surely deliver you. More importantly, everyone who desires a peaceful and joyful home should read this book. Prevention is better than cure. As you study this book and apply the lessons therein, your home shall never come under fire; rather it shall be heaven on earth in Jesus' name (Amen). God bless you.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cultural differences increasingly impact our everyday lives. Virtually none of us today interact exclusively with people who look, talk, and behave like we do. David Smith here offers an excellent guide to living and learning in our culturally interconnected world. / Learning from the Stranger clearly explains what "culture" is, discusses how cultural difference affects our perceptions and behavior, and explores how Jesus' call to love our neighbor involves learning from cultural strangers. Built around three chapter-length readings of extended biblical passages (from Genesis, Luke, and Acts), the book skillfully weaves together theological and practical concerns, and Smith s engaging, readable text is peppered with stories from his own extensive firsthand experience. / Many thoughtful readers will resonate with this insightful book as it encourages the virtues of humility and hospitality in our personal interactions and shows how learning from strangers, not just imparting our own ideas to them, is an integral part of Christian discipleship.
