This book is for everyone seeking The Straight Truth about the highly rewarding, high-stakes world of the expert witness. In these pages, the author shares valuable information about launching, marketing, building, and conducting an expert witness practice-but he does not stop there. Gulya discusses actual cases on which he served as an expert witness, revealing lessons learned, and alerting the reader to potential opportunities and pitfalls. With humanity, candor, and humor, he takes the reader right into deposition and trial, and lets them experience all the drama, heartbreak, and triumph of the expert witness life. William "Bill" Gulya has forty years of experience in the sitework construction business. He is a highly respected and sought after expert witness in his field. For many of those years, he has been the principal of Middlesex Trenching, a company founded by his late and beloved father. Over the years, Gulya grew the business from a tiny company using the local deli as an office, into a highly successful enterprise. The author and his wife Kathy have two children- Stacy and William, III-and four grandchildren, whom they adore. Gulya derives great satisfaction from using his extensive experience and knowledge to make a difference in people's lives. When he is not busy guiding justice toward the truth, he can often be found on the golf course, ruminating on the evidence in his latest case, and perfecting his golf swing. Book excerpt: The Courage of the Truth is the last course that Michel Foucault delivered in a series of lectures from 1970 to 1984 at the Collège de France. Here, Foucault continues the theme of the previous year's lectures in exploring the notion of "truth-telling" in politics to establish a number of ethically irreducible conditions based on courage and conviction. His death, on June 25th, 1984, tempts us to detect the philosophical testament in these lectures, especially in view of the prominence they give to the themes of life and death.

Book excerpt: "Sanctify Christ as Lord in your hearts, always being ready to make a defense to everyone who asks you to give an account for the hope that is in you, yet with gentleness and reverence." -1 Peter 3:15 Scripture is clear about the fact that we must be prepared to communicate the truth of the Gospel when given the opportunity—and do it with the right attitude. But even when your tone is gentle and respectful, what, specifically, should you say when asked or confronted about your faith? And what is your overall responsibility to unbelievers as a disciple of Christ? Pastor John MacArthur responds to these very questions and more—with solid, biblical answers focused in four particular areas: * your attitude * your preparedness * the content of your answers * your priority in witnessing Combining a biblical study of evangelism, a rational defense of Christian beliefs, and a practical approach to evangelism, this book offers a well-rounded perspective that can help you gently and confidently give an answer for the hope you have in Christ.

Book Ian Fleming s Inspiration

Download or read book Ian Fleming s Inspiration written by Edward Abel Smith and published by Pen and Sword History. This book was released on 2020-05-30 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: James Bond is possibly the most well known fictional character in history. What most people don’t know is that almost all of the characters, plots and gadgets come from the real life experiences of Bond’s creator - Commander Ian Fleming. In this book, we go through the plots of Fleming’s novels explaining the real life experiences that inspired them. The reader is taken on a journey through Fleming’s direct involvement in World War II intelligence and how this translated through his typewriter into James Bond’s world, as well as the many other factors of Fleming’s life which were also taken as inspiration. Most notably, the friends who Fleming kept, among whom were Noel Coward and Randolph Churchill and the influential people he would mingle with, British Prime Ministers and American Presidents. Bond is known for his exotic travel, most notably to the island of Jamaica, where Fleming spent much of his life. The desk in his Caribbean house, Goldeneye, was also where his life experiences would be put onto paper in the guise of James Bond. As the island was highly influential for Fleming, it features heavily in this book, offering an element of escapism to the reader, with tales of a clear blue sea, Caribbean climate and island socialising. Ian Fleming might have died prematurely aged 53, but so much of him lives on to this day through the most famous spy in the world, James Bond.

Book The House of Truth

    Book Details:
  • Author : Brad Snyder
  • Publisher : Oxford University Press
  • Release : 2017-01-05
  • ISBN : 0190262001

Download or read book The House of Truth written by Brad Snyder and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2017-01-05 with total page 688 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1912, a group of ambitious young men, including future Supreme Court justice Felix Frankfurter and future journalistic giant Walter Lippmann, became disillusioned by the sluggish progress of change in the Taft Administration. The individuals started to band together informally, joined initially by their enthusiasm for Theodore Roosevelt's Bull Moose campaign. They self-mockingly called the 19th Street row house in which they congregated the "House of Truth," playing off the lively dinner discussions with frequent guest (and neighbor) Oliver Wendell Holmes, Jr. about life's verities. Lippmann and Frankfurter were house-mates, and their frequent guests included not merely Holmes but Louis Brandeis, Herbert Hoover, Herbert Croly - founder of the New Republic - and the sculptor (and sometime Klansman) Gutzon Borglum, later the creator of the Mount Rushmore monument. Weaving together the stories and trajectories of these varied, fascinating, combative, and sometimes contradictory figures, Brad Snyder shows how their thinking about government and policy shifted from a firm belief in progressivism - the belief that the government should protect its workers and regulate monopolies - into what we call liberalism - the belief that government can improve citizens' lives without abridging their civil liberties and, eventually, civil rights. Holmes replaced Roosevelt in their affections and aspirations. His famous dissents from 1919 onward showed how the Due Process clause could protect not just business but equality under the law, revealing how a generally conservative and reactionary Supreme Court might embrace, even initiate, political and social reform. Across the years, from 1912 until the start of the New Deal in 1933, the remarkable group of individuals associated with the House of Truth debated the future of America. They fought over Sacco and Vanzetti's innocence; the dangers of Communism; the role the United States should play the world after World War One; and thought dynamically about things like about minimum wage, child-welfare laws, banking insurance, and Social Security, notions they not only envisioned but worked to enact. American liberalism has no single source, but one was without question a row house in Dupont Circle and the lives that intertwined there at a crucial moment in the country's history.
