One who knew him well said of him: "He was a man of great drollery, and it would almost make you laugh to look at him. I never saw but one other man whose quiet, droll look excited in me the disposition to laugh, and that was 'Artemus Ward.' "Mordecai was quite a story-teller, and in this Abe resembled his 'Uncle Mord, ' as we called him. He was an honest man, as tender-hearted as a woman, and to the last degree charitable and benevolent. "Abe Lincoln had a very high opinion of his uncle, and on one occasion remarked, 'I have often said that Uncle Mord had run off with all the talents of the family.'" In a letter about his family history, just before he was nominated for the presidency, Abraham Lincoln wrote: "My parents were both born in Virginia, of undistinguished families--second families, perhaps I should say. My mother was of a family of the name of Hanks. My paternal grandfather, Abraham Lincoln, emigrated from Rockingham County, Virginia, _ We are delighted to publish this classic book as part of our extensive Classic Library collection. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Life of Abraham Lincoln There is no doubt that for some time prior to the assassination of Mr. Lincoln, Mr. Arnold had contemplated writing his life. Previous to that event, and while yet a member of Congress, he had commenced to write the History of Abraham Lincoln and the Overthrow of Slavery, which he completed and published in 1867. He brought to the preparation of that work the qualities of an able and conscientious historian, who wrote very largely from personal knowledge and personal observation. It is a book of real interest and exceptional historic value. Important and valuable facts are to be obtained therein which are not to be found elsewhere. This work was never entirely satisfactory to Mr. Arnold, so far as it related to Mr. Lincoln, and hence some two years since he determined to write in a stricter sense the life of Mr. Lincoln, in the light of additional material he had gathered, and disconnected with the history of the overthrow of slavery, except in so far as the subject was connected generally with the administration of Mr. Lincoln. Book The True Story of Abraham Lincoln the American

Download or read book The True Story of Abraham Lincoln the American written by Elbridge S. Brooks and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-09 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The True Story of Abraham Lincoln, the American: Told for Boys and Girls Columbus the discoverer of our country and Washington the father of our country - these two famous ones has this series of "Children's Lives of Great Men" recalled for young Americans. Now comes the third and crowning figure in the series - that of Abraham Lincoln, the savior of his country and, above all others, - the American. His story is as marvellous as a fairy tale and yet as simple as the truth. Sprung from nothing he rose to the highest eminence, and died a martyr for liberty, union and the rights of man. Upon his life, through four terrible years, hung the destinies of this republic and the redemption of a race. Today, the world reveres him as one of the most eminent rulers of any time; the future will yet place him where he rightly belongs - one of the worlds greatest men, perhaps, the greatest. For the boys and girls of America, brought up in the atmosphere of liberty, of justice and of patriotism, Abraham Lincoln the man of the people, has an especial claim to reverence. He stands as a type - as, before all others, the American. In the preface to the "The True Story of George Washington," the writer quoted, for boys and girls, a sentiment from one of the noblest of American thinkers and authors, James Russell Lowell. This introduction to the "True Story of Abraham Lincoln," can not be more fittingly closed than with the splendid tribute of this same prophetic poet, in his noble "Commemorative Ode," which every boy and girl of America should some day read: "These all are gone; and standing like a tower, Our children shall behold his fame, The kindly, earnest, brave, far-seeing man, Sagacious, patient, dreading praise, not blame, New birth of our new soil, the first American." Book excerpt: Excerpt from Abraham Lincoln: A History It is not, therefore, with any thought of materially adding to his already accomplished renown that we have written the work which we now offer to our fellow-citizens. But each age owes to its successors the truth in regard to its own annals. The young men who have been born since Sumter was fired on have a right to all their elders know of the important events they came too late to share in. The life and the fame of Lincoln will not have their legitimate effect of instruction and example unless the Circumstances among which he lived and found his opportunities are placed in their true light before the men who never saw him. To write the life of this great American in such a way as to show his relations to the times in which he moved, thbe stupendous Issues he controlled, the remarkable men by whom he was surrounded, has been the purpose which the authors have diligently pursued for many years. We can say nothing of the result of our labor; only those who have been similarly employed can appreciate the sense of inadequate performance with which we regard what we have accomplished. We can only Claim for our work that we have devoted to it sixteen years of almost unremitting assiduity that we have neglected no means in our power to ascertain the truth that we have rejected no authentic facts essential to a candid story that we have had no theory to establish, no personal grudge to gratify, no unavowed objects to subserve. We have aimed to write a sufficiently full and absolutely honest history of a great man and a great time; and although we take it for granted that we have made mistakes, that we have fallen into such errors and inaccuracies as are unavoidable in so large a work, we promise there shall not be found a line in all these chapters dictated by malice or unfairness. Our desire to have this work placed under the eyes of the greatest possible number of readers induced us to accept the generous offer of the century magazine to print it first in these pages. In this way it will receive the intelligent criticism of a million people, con temporaries of the events narrated, and we expect to profit by the suggestions and corrections which such a method of publication invites. Moreover, as we have endeavored to write this history with a purpose of absolute fairness to every party and every section of the country, we ardently desire that, by its wide dissemination, it may contribute to the growth and maintenance throughout all our borders of that spirit of freedom and nationality for which Abraham Lincoln lived and died. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Life of Abraham Lincoln for Young People: Told in Words of One Syllable Near five scores of years have gone by since a poor, plain babe was born in a log hut on the banks of a small stream known as the "Big South Fork" of No-lin's Creek. This was in Ken-tuc-ky and in what is now La-rue Coun-ty. It was Sun-day, Feb. 12, 1809, when this child came to bless the world. The hut, not much more than a cow-shed, held the fa-ther and moth-er, whose names were Thom-as and Nan-cy, and their girl child, Sa-rah. These three were the first who saw the strange, sad face of the boy, who, when he grew to be a man, was so great and good and did such grand deeds that all the world gave most high praise to him. Book The Story of Young Abraham Lincoln

Download or read book The Story of Young Abraham Lincoln written by Wayne Whipple and published by . This book was released on 2012-11-11 with total page 120 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The boy or girl who reads to-day may know more about the real Lincoln than his own children knew. The greatest President's son, Robert Lincoln, discussing a certain incident in their life in the White House, remarked to the writer, with a smile full of meaning:"I believe you know more about our family matters than I do!"This is because "all the world loves a lover"-and Abraham Lincoln loved everybody. With all his brain and brawn, his real greatness was in his heart. He has been called "the Great-Heart of the White House," and there is little doubt that more people have heard about him than there are who have read of the original "Great-Heart" in "The Pilgrim's Progress."Indeed, it is safe to say that more millions in the modern world are acquainted with the story of the rise of Abraham Lincoln from a poorlybuilt log cabin to the highest place among "the seats of the mighty," than are familiar with the Bible story of Joseph who arose and stood next to the throne of the Pharaohs.Nearly every year, especially since the Lincoln Centennial, 1909, something new has been added to the universal knowledge of one of the greatest, if not the greatest man who ever lived his life in the world. Not only those who "knew Lincoln," but many who only "saw him once" or shook hands with him, have been called upon to tell what they saw him do or heard him say. So hearty was his kindness toward everybody that the most casual remark of his seems to be charged with deep human affection-"the touch of Nature" which has made "the whole world kin" to him.He knew just how to sympathize with every one. The people felt this, without knowing why, and recognized it in every deed or word or touch, so that those who have once felt the grasp of his great warm hand seem to have been drawn into the strong circuit of "Lincoln fellowship," and were enabled, as if by "the laying on of hands," to speak of him ever after with a deep and tender feeling. There are many such people who did not rush into print with their observations and experiences. Their Lincoln memories seemed too sacred to scatter far and wide. Some of them have yielded, with real reluctance, in relating all for publication in THE STORY OF YOUNG ABRAHAM LINCOLN only because they wished their recollections to benefit the rising generation.
