Book excerpt: From the book: How did this book come to be written? That is the question, I understand, that all prefaces should answer. I wish that I could give an unusual reason, or at least an original one, but I can't. Attack Transport was written partly for something to do and partly as a memento for the men who served on the Doyen. It was just after the Iwo Jima operation, when the ship was en route to Guam, that the work was actually begun. The original plan was to trace the action of the Doyen from commissioning through her last operation. Getting the material wasn't easy. Since I reported aboard just before the Saipan invasion, I had no personal knowledge of the commissioning ceremony, or of the Kiska, Gilbert, or Marshall Islands campaigns. All the facts and incidents had to be drawn laboriously from the old-timers aboard-- the "plank owners" they were called. But it was done, and the words were at last set down on paper. The story is told in the first person throughout, as if I had been on the scene from the time the ship was commissioned. I have taken this liberty with the facts, not to claim credit for actions in which I did not participate, but simply and wholly in the interests of producing a smoother and more personal narrative. Though I did not actually report aboard until after the Marshalls, the factual material preceding that time is true. All the incidents happened, and the characters involved took part in them. The chapter on crossing the equator is wholly authentic. The Doyen crossed the line at least eight times. I have merely transposed my own initiation experiences to a crossing of an earlier date. Attack Transport professes to do but one thing-- to describe the war in the Pacific as it was seen from one small unit of the fleet. It is not an analytical discussion of policies, but merely an account of the day-to-day life. Combat has been kept in its proper relation to other activities. It is not the story of one man, or essentially of one ship. It is a compilation of the experiences of many of our ship's personnel; it represents many hours of bull sessions-- of long discussions with Commander Hogan, Doc Gil, Doc Watkins, Doc Kelly, Tom Hawk, Ed Buczek, Sal Murino, Cliff Hanlin, "Pop" Slattery, "Ace" Parker, and the many others who are all its indirect authors. The experiences were not peculiar to the Doyen. They have been duplicated on the hundreds of other vessels of the Amphibious Force with which we traveled. I sincerely hope that the book is worthy of the men and the ship it describes.

Book Mass Suicides on Saipan and Tinian 1944

Download or read book Mass Suicides on Saipan and Tinian 1944 written by Alexander Astroth and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2019-03-27 with total page 231 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When the Americans invaded the Japanese-controlled islands of Saipan and Tinian in 1944, civilians and combatants committed mass suicide to avoid being captured. Though these mass suicides have been mentioned in documentary films, they have received scant scholarly attention. This book draws on United States National Archives documents and photographs, as well as veteran and survivor testimonies, to provide readers with a better understanding of what happened on the two islands and why. The author details the experiences of the people of the islands from prehistoric times to the present, with an emphasis on the Japanese, Okinawan, Korean, Chamorro and Carolinian civilians during invasion and occupation.

Book excerpt: Torpedoes Away! details US Navy submarine operations during the first 18 months of World War Two. Author Maxwell Hawkins breathlessly covers the tense, dangerous missions of submarines USS Trout, Sea Raven, Pollack, Skipjack, Cuttlefish, and others. Between these first-hand reports stitched-together from interviews with crewmen, Hawkins describes the mechanical workings of submarines, as well as the history of submersibles beginning in the 17th Century. He spent over a year sifting through the archives of the Navy Department and conducted extensive interviews with many veteran submariners about their experiences in the Pacific during World War Two. The result is a classic study of underwater warfare, a must read for military historians and World War 2 buffs.

Book The Battle of Iwo Jima

    Book Details:
  • Author : Walt Sandberg
  • Publisher : McFarland
  • Release : 2004-12-16
  • ISBN : 0786417900
  • Pages : 265 pages

Download or read book The Battle of Iwo Jima written by Walt Sandberg and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2004-12-16 with total page 265 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Beginning with the Marine assault on February 19, 1945, the Battle for Iwo Jima quickly became the bloodiest battle in Marine Corps history. Today this fierce battle remains high in our collective memories, not only for its terrors but for its indelible image of triumph: the raising of the flag on Mt. Suribachi. Much information exists about the Battle for Iwo Jima, but it is scattered and can be difficult to track down. This book draws the information together in two ways. It offers bibliographic listings to lead researchers to useful sources, and provides actual texts of documents related to the battle and its aftermath. Part One, “The Bibliography,” offers information on more than 800 books, magazines, official documents, audio-visual materials and online resources about the Battle of Iwo Jima. Each listing is annotated to assist researchers, historians, veterans and others seeking information. Part Two, “The Anthology,” offers the texts of hard-to-locate documents; a series of maps showing the day-by-day progression of the battle; and a selection of poetry inspired by the battle. Appendices provide details of the American chain of command and both the American and the Japanese orders of battle; describe some lingering mysteries about the Battle of Iwo Jima; and list Iwo Jima memorial sites around the world.
