Book The Story of the Thirteen Colonies Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Story of the Thirteen Colonies Classic Reprint written by Hélène Adeline Guerber and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-07-08 with total page 356 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Story of the Thirteen Colonies This book is intended as an historical reader, an elementary text-book in the history of our country, or as an introduction or supplement to any of the excellent text-books on the history of the United States now in use. The aim has been not only to interest children in the great men of their own country, but to stimulate them to the cultiva tion of the lofty virtues of which they read, and to instil within their hearts a deep love for their native land. All the main facts in our early history have been given as sim ply and vividly as possible, and the lessons of patriotism, truth fulness, courage, patience, honesty, and industry taught by the lives of our principal heroes are carefully enforced. Great pains have also been taken to relate all the well-known anecdotes and quote the famous speeches which are so frequently alluded to in our current literature. Although this book ends with the Revolutionary War, the story of our country is continued on the same lines in a companion volume entitled The Story of the Great Republic; yet each book is independent of the other and can be used separately. So simply worded as to be easily intelligible to average children of ten or twelve years of age, the text is further arranged in short paragraphs, to facilitate its use as a reader in large classes. Captain Cornelius Hendricksen went around by sea after them, exploring both bay and river and finding the region abounding in game, the banks covered with grape-vines, and the natives gentle and possessing fortunes in seal and other Skins, for which Hendrick sen opened a lively trade. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Colonial New York To tell this story of absorbing interest in simple language and in large outlines, that may be comprehended by children in the seventh and eighth grades, is the purpose of this second volume in a series of monographs, or studies in colonial history which the Colonial Dames of America in the State of Ohio have undertaken to publish for the use of the schools. The first study, Colonial Virginia, which has been used in the schools of this city since its publication in March of the present year, has demonstrated its value, and has shown the desirability of continuing the work until the story of each of the Thirteen Colonies has been made available in this form. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The History of the Thirteen Colonies of North America: 1497-1763 It has been my object in this small book to put into a handy form a short narrative of the History of the Thirteen Colonies. In the limited space at my command I have endeavoured to give as often as possible the actual words of contemporaries, hoping that the reader may thereby be tempted to search further for himself amongst the mass of documentary evidence which still needs so much careful study. I cannot send this book into the world without acknowledging my indebtedness to both the Beit Professor of Colonial History, Mr H. E. Egerton, and the Beit Lecturer on Colonial History, Mr W. L. Grant, whose kind suggestions have proved most valuable. At the same time I must thank Mr E. L. S. Horsburgh, for by his action the writing of this little work was made possible. Book A Short History of the English Colonies in America Classic Reprint

Download or read book A Short History of the English Colonies in America Classic Reprint written by Henry Cabot Lodge and published by . This book was released on 2015-09-27 with total page 588 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Short History of the English Colonies in America The history of the thirteen American colonies is at best fragmentary and provincial, and does not assume the importance and value of the history of a nation until the meeting of the Stamp Act Congress at New York in the year 1765. But who and what the people were who fought the war for Independence and founded the United States - what was their life, what their habits, thoughts, and manners - seemed to me, when I began my study of American history, questions of the deepest interest. They were questions, too, which appeared to me never to have been answered in a compact and comprehensive form; and this volume is an attempt to supply the deficiency. The chapters, therefore, which purport to describe the various colonies in and about the year 1765 represent the purpose of the book. They have been worked out, in the course of several years, from a mass of material which has been collected in all directions, and which, although wholly in print, is in many cases as generally unknown as if it still slumbered in manuscript. To these chapters I have appended notes - mere references - partly to support conclusions which I thought might be questioned, and partly to aid other students in the same field. The notes represent, however, only a portion of the books, tracts, and newspapers actually consulted. There are many titles in my note-books of works which yielded nothing, and of others again which offered matter that had to be laid aside from mere superabundance of material: only the most valuable and important figure in the notes. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The story of our country really began way back in the history of England in the year 1215 when King John of England was forced by some of his barons to sign a document called the Magna Carta. This document, among other things, prevented the king from taxing the barons without their consent. King John had driven England nearly to bankruptcy because he spent so much money to fund his continual participation in the Crusades. (The Crusades were a period in history when Christian knights tried to take back the Holy Land, which had been conquered by the Muslims.) The barons were tired of being taxed to pay for his wars. This document was essentially a document in medieval times to clarify the differences between the three powers in England at the timethe Catholic Church, the king, and the barons. This is an important document because it was the first time in history that people other than the king or the church were given some powers. It did nothing about grant rights to the peasants and the merchant class. This is important because it was the very first time in the history of the world that the king and the church had their powers curbed. Not one other country in the world at this time had a Magna Carta (many still dont), and this is important because it was the English who were the first ones to colonize the areas of our country, which was first known as the thirteen colonies. These colonists brought with them these truly revolutionary ideas of individual freedom.

It touches on the intellectual relationships of the eighteenth century the French authors for whom America was an exotic dream, the philosophers whose liberal thought was translated by Jefferson into a program of action, the scientists who became members of the youthful American Philosophical Society, as well as the officers of the armed forces of France whose intervention swung the balance of the War for Independence in favor of the colonies.
