Book excerpt: Why does a city surrounded by water need another waterway? Find out what drove Seattle's civic leaders to pursue the dream of a Lake Washington Ship Canal for more than sixty years and what role it has played in the region's development over the past century. Historians Jennifer Ott and David B. Williams, author of Too High and Too Steep: Reshaping Seattle's Topography, explore how industry, transportation, and the very character of the city and surrounding region developed in response to the economic and environmental changes brought by Seattle's canal and locks.

Book The Georgian Bay Ship Canal

Download or read book The Georgian Bay Ship Canal written by Ray Love and published by FriesenPress. This book was released on 2021-06-21 with total page 164 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Georgian Bay Ship Canal was a river and lake canalization scheme designed to create a commercial waterway along the route of the voyageurs. It was the dream of Canadian businessmen and entrepreneurs for centuries. Originally a trade route for Indigenous peoples, it became Canada's first Trans-Canada Highway during the fur trade, greatly contributing to the economic development of the colonies of France and later Britain. In the early years of Canadian nationhood it was viewed as the shortest route to get prairie grain to world markets. The canal scheme was supported by no fewer than six Canadian Prime Ministers and for a century less two years was surveyed a dozen times. It was also hotly debated in the Canadian Senate and House of Commons. The scheme was supported by lobby groups in Northern and Eastern Ontario as well as the Montreal business elite. It was strongly criticized by citizen's groups in cities along the shores of the rival Welland-St. Lawrence route. The story told is why the scheme, despite its geographical advantages, failed to see the bucket of a steam shovel. It is a story of political intrigue, Northern Ontario versus the South and the role that federal government overspending played in its demise. It was also at the center of the battle between federal and provincial governments over control of the lucrative resource of hydro-electricity. The book contains many historic maps and photos of the route as well as modern images from this famous Canadian waterway.

Book History of the Manchester Ship Canal Vol 1 of 2

Download or read book History of the Manchester Ship Canal Vol 1 of 2 written by Bosdin Leech and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-03 with total page 422 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of the Manchester Ship Canal, Vol. 1 of 2: From Its Inception to Its Completion With Personal Reminiscences HE early struggles and ultimate triumph of the Manchester Ship Canal consti T tute a subject of absorbing interest. In the history of Manchester, and indeed Of South Lancashire as a whole, no other event or enterprise can compare with it in its far-reaching effects. The story, too, in many respects contains all the elements of a romance. It is the relation of a desperate and almost hopeless fight against Opposi tion of the most powerful and uncompromising character, and it is meet that the names and qualities Of the men engaged in the strife, and the nature of the difficulties which they encountered and overcame, should find a permanent record. To rescue both individuals and incidents from Oblivion, and to give a connected narrative of the course of events from the conception to the completion of the canal, is the Object Of the present work The task has not been an easy one, nor has it been lightly undertaken. If, however, a personal association with the enterprise from the outset, a close and intimate knowledge Of all its engineering and constructive phases, and the possession of a unique collection of materials, correspondence, reports and records of every kind, may be regarded as qualifications necessary, if not even indispensable, I can at least lay claim to these.
