Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Story of the Revised New Testament: American Standard Edition It was necessary in telling this story to begin at the inception of the movement for Revision. Hence this little book repeats many facts that were published when, and immediately after, the Revised New Testa ment of 1881 appeared. But another gener ation has grown up since that date, and much well known to Biblical scholars will be new to most readers to - day. Yet, even in telling of the labors before 1881, the writer, from his connection with the American Company of New Testament Revisers, has been able to include many facts not known to the general public. The account of the preparation of the Standard Edition of the American Revised New Testament has never been published before, and the writer has found, from many letters of inquiry, that little is known about the details. The same inquiries indicate a desire to learn the facts as here briefly presented. Thirty-five years have passed since the work began, and this sketch has been penned in the desire and hope of making these long years of labor. Book HISTORY OF ENGLISH VERSIONS OF THE BIBLE

Download or read book HISTORY OF ENGLISH VERSIONS OF THE BIBLE written by Edward D. Andrews and published by Christian Publishing House. This book was released on 2019-10-22 with total page 166 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The fascinating story of how we got the English Bible in its present form starts 1,120 years ago. HISTORY OF ENGLISH VERSIONS OF THE BIBLE covers the fascinating journey of the Bible from the 9th century AD to the beginning of the 20th-century. The chief translator of the Updated American Standard Version Edward D. Andrews invites readers to explore the process of from the early manuscripts to contemporary translations today. And so, it was that translators like William Tyndale were martyred for the honor of giving the people a Bible that could easily be understood. What a price they had paid, however; it was a priceless gift! Tyndale and others before and after him had worked with the shadow of death towering over their heads. However, by delivering the Bible to many people in their native tongue, they opened up before them the possibility, not of death, but life eternal. As Jesus Christ said in the Tyndale Bible, “This is lyfe eternall that they myght knowe the that only very God and whom thou hast sent Iesus Christ.” (John 17:3) May we, therefore, know the value of what we can now hold in our hands, and may we diligently study God’s Word.

Book THE REVISIONS OF THE ENGLISH HOLY BIBLE

Download or read book THE REVISIONS OF THE ENGLISH HOLY BIBLE written by Edward D. Andrews and published by Christian Publishing House. This book was released on 2022-09-11 with total page 261 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 1611 King James Version was a revision of multiple English Bibles from the 1500s: Tyndale’s Bible, Coverdale’s Bible, Matthew’s Bible, Taverner’s Bible, the Great Bible, the Geneva Bible, and the Bishops’ Bible. The 1611 King James Bible translators stated in the Preface that they knew others would revise their work too (1) as more manuscripts came to light and (2) translators had a better understanding of biblical Hebrew and Greek. How many versions of the King James are there? Eventually, five different editions of the King James Version were produced in 1611, 1629, 1638, 1762, and 1769. It is the 1769 edition which is most commonly cited as the King James Version (KJV). The next major revision of the English Bible came in 1881, 1885 Revised Version) and 1901 American Standard Version. Over 30,000 changes were made, of which more than 5,000 represent differences between the Greek text used for the Revised Version and that used as the basis of the King James Version. Most of the other changes were made in the interest of consistency or modernization. Further significant revisions only considering literal translations have been the 1952 Revised Standard Version, the 1960-2020 New American Standard Bible, the 2001 English Standard Version, and the 2022 Updated American Standard Version. We do not need the originals. We do not need those original documents. The Bible was miraculously restored, not miraculously preserved as some would like us to believe. Herein, we will clear up many misunderstandings and misconceptions about the English Bible translations.

Book In Discordance with the Scriptures

Download or read book In Discordance with the Scriptures written by Peter Johannes Thuesen and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 2002 with total page 257 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The story of the translation of the Bible in America begins with the King James Version. In fact, many Americans thought of the KJV as the foundational text of the Republic, rather than a cultural inheritance from Anglican Britain. In the nineteenth century, however, as new editions of the Greek New Testament appeared, scholars increasingly recognized significant errors and inconsistencies in the KJV. This soon 1ed to the Bible revision movement, whose goal was the uniting of all English-speaking Protestants behind one new, improved version of the Bible. Ironically, as Peter Thuesen shows in this fascinating history, the revision movement in fact resulted in a vast proliferation of English scripture editions and an enduring polarization of American Christians over versions of Holy Writ. The recurrent controversies over Bible translations, he argues, tell us less about the linguistic issues dividing conservatives and liberals than about the theological assumptions they have long held in common.
