Book The Story of Pullman Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Story of Pullman Classic Reprint written by World'S Columbian Exposition and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-18 with total page 44 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Story of Pullman At just what time Mr. Pullman first began thinking on the subject of sleeping-cars, he would himself perhaps find it difficult to tell. The problem had been raised by the comple tion of what then were considered long lines of railroad. Baltimore, Philadelphia and New York had thrown out filaments of iron for considerable distances toward the West. To get to the Ohio River at either Wheeling or Pittsburgh, or to get to Lake Erie at Dunkirk or Buffalo, involved a journey of over 400 miles. A journey of 400 miles took as much time as now does one of more than double that distance. The physical fatigue involved was greater than is now incident to a trip from the Atlantic Ocean to the Pacific. Book The Cars of Pullman

Download or read book The Cars of Pullman written by Joe Welsh and published by Crestline Books. This book was released on 2015-03-18 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of America's greatest business enterprises, the Pullman Company provided outstanding service aboard a vast fleet of railroad passenger cars that could be found in almost every nook and cranny of the United States. This illustrated history examines Pullman's diverse fleet, from its spectacular custom-built wooden cars of the nineteenth century to steel heavyweight cars in the prewar years and on into the lightweight streamlined era. Pullman cars are a tribute to a hard-working generation of men and women who worked to bring the coasts of the United States together efficiently and in style. Author Joe Welsh includes period photos, many in rare color, as well as car diagrams and ads that help trace the development, composition, and evolution of the historically and culturally significant Pullman fleet, including the gamut of sleeper, parlor, and restaurant cars. Take an interesting look into the time period that relied on train cars, as well as the classic style of the cars themselves. This is a fitting tribute to the former cultural icons aboard which strode giants of American life, such as Babe Ruth and Clark Gable, as well as first-time travelers from small-town America.
