Book The Story of the Pictish Beast

Download or read book The Story of the Pictish Beast written by Mark Ashley and published by . This book was released on 2016-09-02 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Picts were a race that inhabited large tracts of present day Scotland from around AD300 and remained dominant for a period of 500 to 600 years. They were made up of many tribes, but despite their numbers little is known about them; in fact, the only surviving Pictish document is a list of the names of their kings. Some say they were warrior people, some call them the 'Painted People' after the tattoos with which they adorned their bodies. To the south their neighbours varied with time from the Romans to the Britons and Angles. To the west they shared or disputed territory with the Scots invaders from DalRiada in Ireland. In their later years, the Picts had to contend with Viking invaders from Scandinavia in the north. It was a precarious life, in an often inhospitable but beautiful land. Knowledge of their language and culture has been lost through time, however, there remains one significant lasting reminder of the Picts; these are the Pictish Stones. There exists, mainly in the north and east of Scotland, around 350 of these standing stones, all of which have some sort of inscription upon them. Some of the inscriptions are religious in nature, some are of artefacts, and some of them are unidentifiable. Many of the stones have outlines of animals, among which are the serpent, the bull, the wolf and the deer. Yet of all the stone inscriptions, there is one image that is both most frequent in number, comprising of almost forty per cent of all animal images, and the most mystifying. It is known simply as the Pictish Beast. No-one has been able to tell what this creature was, or why it held such importance for the Picts. That is until now; this is the Story of the Pictish Beast! The Story of the Pictish Beast is the tale of the mythical, mystical creature of the stones, and the story of how a boy's life becomes entwined with that of the Beast. It tells of the friendship that they formed and how that friendship leads both to revelations about the heritage of the boy and, more importantly, affects nothing less than the destiny of the Pictish race!

Book excerpt: The Picts were an ancient nation who ruled most of northern and eastern Scotland during the Dark Ages. Despite their historical importance, they remain shrouded in myth and misconception. Absorbed by the kingdom of the Scots in the ninth century, they lost their unique identity, their language and their vibrant artistic culture. Amongst their few surviving traces are standing stones decorated with incredible skill and covered with enigmatic symbols - vivid memorials of a powerful and gifted people who bequeathed no chronicles to tell their story, no sagas to describe the deed of their kings and heroes. In this book Tim Clarkson pieces together the evidence to tell the story of this mysterious people from their emergence in Roman times to their eventual disappearance.

Book The Arrangement of the Class I Pictish Stones North of the River Tay

Download or read book The Arrangement of the Class I Pictish Stones North of the River Tay written by Alan Weir and published by Austin Macauley. This book was released on 2021-05-28 with total page 190 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 50 or so mysterious Pictish symbols and the stones displaying them have become central to all discussion of the Picts. Generations of scholars have sought to interpret the symbols with little agreement. This book takes an indirect approach to the situation. The present layout of Class I stones hints at an arrangement in chains in which adjacent stones in a chain are linked by a common symbol. This is investigated and the chains identified. Between the River Tay and the Dornoch Firth, virtually all stones belong to a chain and the chains seem to be practically complete. The chains appear to have superseded stones created and positioned independently. The stone pattern is more complicated than isolated chains of stones and special junction stones are used to register the crossing of two or more chains. Auxiliary stones are also identified, which give information about a chain or chains. The identification of the chains and the conventions used in junction and auxiliary stones permit the meaning of more than 20 symbols to be understood as they are used in the chains. These are not suggested to be the original meanings of the symbols but they provide hints to assist in assessing what the original meaning of some symbols might be. This particularly applies to significant symbols called crescent and V rod, Pictish beast, and Z rod. The purpose of the chains can only be hinted at here but Pictish scholarship will soon clarify this.

Book An Introduction to Using GIS in Marine Biology

Download or read book An Introduction to Using GIS in Marine Biology written by Colin D. MacLeod and published by . This book was released on 2015-05-31 with total page 150 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is the seventh companion volume to 'An Introduction To Using GIS In Marine Biology'. It is designed to augment the information on using GIS in marine biology provided in that book, and, indeed, to be used alongside it rather than to be used independently as a stand-alone volume. Therefore, this book will be of most interest to those who have already read 'An Introduction To Using GIS In Marine Biology'. This supplementary workbook contains five exercises covering the practical use of GIS in marine biology. These exercises aim to introduce marine biologists to using QGIS (or Quantum GIS), a freely-available, open-source GIS software package, and range from making a simple map of the locations where a species was recorded for inclusion in a publication, or presentation to creating grids of species presence-absence, richness and abundance, and grids of environmental variables. The exercises are designed to be followed in the order they are presented, and work with a specific data set which can be downloaded separately for free. Working through these five exercises will help the novice GIS user obtain experience in working with GIS and so develop their GIS skills. Unlike most other GIS tutorials, this information is specifically presented in a marine biological context and all the exercises use real data from a marine biological study. Therefore, these exercises are more likely to provide the kind of experience in using GIS that marine biologists will find useful and applicable to their own research. These exercises are presented in the same easy-to-follow flow diagram-based format first introduced in the 'How To...' section of 'An Introduction To Using GIS In Marine Biology'. They are accompanied by images which show the user how their GIS project should look as they progress through the exercises, allowing them to compare their own work to the expected results. This is part of the PSLS series of books which use Task-Oriented Learning (TOL) to teach the practical application of research skills to the life sciences. This involves demonstrating how these skills can be used in the specific circumstances in which they are likely to be required rather than concentrating on teaching theoretical frameworks or on teaching skills in a generic or abstract manner. By seeing how the similar processes are used to achieve a variety of different goals within a specific field, it becomes easier for the reader to identify the general rules behind the practical application of these processes and, therefore, to transfer them to novel situations they may encounter in the future.

Twenty years of being hunted—by the O’Byrnes, who fear the prophecy, and by her kinsmen, who expect her to lead them against their oppressors. But Brenna is a trained and gifted healer, not a warrior queen. So she lives alone in the wilderness with only her pet wolf for company. When she rescues a man badly wounded from an ambush, she believes he may be the answer to her deep loneliness. Healing him comes as easy as loving him. But can their love overcome years of bitterness and greed…and bring peace and renewed faith to the shattered kingdom?

Book excerpt: A cache of over 100 gold, silver and other items, the richest collection of rare and unique Viking-age objects ever found in Britain or Ireland, was unearthed by a metal detectorist in 2014. A large fundraising campaign ensured that what has come to be known as 'the Galloway Hoard' was saved for the nation. There is a chance to see the treasure at the National Museum of Scotland 18 February - 18 October 21. The exhibition will subsequently go on tour to Kirkcudbright, Aberdeen and Dundee. The accompanying book places the hoard in a wider historical context and showcases the conservation and research work currently being undertaken to understand the hoard and its secrets.
