Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Story of the Pennsylvania Germans: Embracing an Account of Their Origin, Their History, and Their DialectIt is not known where the original home of the Indo - Europeans was. A vast amount of literature has been produced on this subject by ethnologists, and other investigators, with varying Views, only to leave the question of man's birthplace in dispute and doubt. The weight of the more recent, and best evidence on the subject seems to locate his original habitat, at some point, somewhere on the southern slope of the vast chain of mountains which extend in an almost unbroken line from the northern coast of Spain east ward to the Himalayas, and from our present knowl edge the western rather than the eastern extremity of this chain, is that which offers the higher probability of having been the cradle of the species.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. The following vocabulary contains numerous Pennsylvania German words and idioms, with their Pfiilzisch, High German, and English equivalents. The Pennsylvania German words are spelled, on the High German basis wherever it could be done without sacrificing the Pennsylvania German sound; where that could not be done, the plan of Pennsylvania German dialect writers has been followed, as near as their diversified spelling would admit of. The Pfalzisch words are taken from South German dialect writers, chiefly from Kobell's "Gedichte in Pfalzischer Mundart," and Ludwig Schandein's "Gedichte in Westricher Mundart," both of which books were written, and published in South Germany. This book was released on 2009-04 with total page 547 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A comprehensive guide to the history, theory and practice of Pow Wow, this book draws upon historical documentation, traditional methods, and a life of personal experience. Pow Wow, or Braucherei, as it is known by its practitioners, is a system of folk magic that has its roots in Christian and Pre-Christian Germany, but its character is wholy American - the quintissential American magical system. Drawing on quotes from the Bible, qabalistic principles and old gromoires, it is empowered by the Holy Trinity, and most practitioners consider themselves to be Christian, much like the Cunning Folk of England. The final chapter, about Doctor Santee, references material and uses a photograph that is copyright GLHoke, and used with permission. "The Red Church: The Art of Pennsylvania German Braucherei is the finest book on German magic to be seen in decades. Comprehensive in its historical, philosophical and cultural roots, The Red Church is a book that will be appreciated by academics and modern practitioners of not just folk and ceremonial magic alike, but also energetic and faith healing, symbolism, and cultural psychology. Extensively researched and documented, no one interested in the survival of Medieval and Renaissance magic into the modern era should be without a copy of it within easy reach." - Mark Stavish, Director of Studies, Institute for Hermetic Studies, author of, The Path of Alchemy, Freemasonry - Rituals, Symbols and History of the Secret Society, and Between the Gates: Lucid Dreaming, Astral Projection and the Body of Light.

Book excerpt: This comprehensive encyclopedia—the first of its kind—maps out three hundred years of German history and culture in Pennsylvania and beyond. Winner of the CHOICE Outstanding Academic Title of the Choice ACRL Destined to become the standard reference on Pennsylvania Germans (also known as the “Pennsylvania Dutch”), this book is the first survey of this extensive American group in nearly seventy-five years. Nineteen broad interpretive essays written by a distinguished group of historians, anthropologists, sociologists, linguists, and folklorists tell the rich and nuanced story of Pennsylvania German history and culture. United by a distinct (and distinctly American) language, the Pennsylvania Germans have been slower to assimilate than other ethnic groups. This sweeping volume reveals, though, that the group is much less homogenous and isolated than was previously thought. From architecture, media, and farming techniques to food, folklore, and medicine, the Pennsylvania Germans and their descendants display a wide range of cultural variation. In Pennsylvania Germans, editors Simon J. Bronner and Joshua R. Brown broaden the geographical and social coverage of the group, touching both on Pennsylvanian communities and the Pennsylvania German diaspora, including settlements in Canada and Mexico. They also expand historical coverage of the Pennsylvania Germans to the twentieth and twenty-first centuries. Beautifully illustrated, this volume—while paying tribute to the historical and cultural legacy of the Pennsylvania Germans—is the most comprehensive book on the subject to date. Contributors: R. Troy Boyer, Simon J. Bronner, Joshua R. Brown, Edsel Burdge Jr., William W. Donner, John B. Frantz, Mark Häberlein, Karen M. Johnson-Weiner, Donald B. Kraybill, David W.
