Book A History of the Church of France Vol 1 of 2

Download or read book A History of the Church of France Vol 1 of 2 written by W. Henley Jervis and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-18 with total page 510 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of the Church of France, Vol. 1 of 2: From the Concordat of Bologna, A. D. 1516, to the Revolution The present is an attempt to interest English readers in a field of study which, for whatever reason, has not received among us the amount of attention it deserves. Our literature is not deficient, indeed, in popular productions designed to illustrate different periods and phases of the history of Christianity in France; but they are of a sporadic and fragmentary character. The religious life of that great province of Christendom has not hitherto been treated in our language, so far as I am aware, on any connected plan. Partial glimpses of it have been offered us in memoirs of the Huguenots and the Vaudois; in sketches of the Calvinistic Reformation; in narratives of the persecutions which preceded and followed the Revocation of the Edict of Nantes; in notices of the adventures of Protestant refugees in our own land and elsewhere. These are stirring themes, commanding, in their due measure, our earnest sympathies. They are, however, but episodes; episodes, too, of a somewhat narrow and one-sided type. The position of the Calvinists of France, with regard to the National Church from which they separated, corresponds exactly with that of the Lollards, the Puritans, and the more modern Nonconforming sects, with reference to the National Church of England. Book The Lutheran Church in Paris

Download or read book The Lutheran Church in Paris written by William Wackernagel and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-20 with total page 70 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Lutheran Church in Paris: An Historical and Descriptive Sketch The Lutherans of Paris and in France are looking to the Lutherans in America and uttering a Macedonian Call, "Come over and help us." They are an important link in the polyglot Mother Church of Protestantism and in a most peculiar way serve in these trying days to emphasize the international character of the Lutheran Church which in America uses more languages than any other Protestant denomination in conducting her services. French Lutherans are brothers in a common cause and needing a brotherly helping hand. This little volume will introduce to our American Lutherans these faithful adherents to the Augsburg Confession - "the Magna Charta of Protestantism," - and we trust serve to aid in cementing the bonds which will endure and make their cause and the cause of the Church in America a common one. Together may they assure the maintenance and extension of evangelical faith. To this end this little book is historical, descriptive and missionary. May it inform and may it serve in the extension of the common faith and in the emphasis of our common brotherhood through Jesus Christ our Lord. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Church in France N O attempt has been made in the following chapters to supply the framework of secular history in which that of the Church of France is set, except where, as not seldom happened, the action of each upon each was too marked to be omitted. The proper history is so crowded and Varied that it was also necessary to pass over movements such as the Crusades and Foreign Missions, 'which, however closely connected with the Church of France, yet took place beyond her borders. Book The Story of the Catholic Church Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Story of the Catholic Church Classic Reprint written by George Stebbing and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-09-16 with total page 734 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Story of the Catholic ChurchThe following pages are an attempt to give within a limited compass the main outlines of the events which make up the Story of the Catholic Church. That story is one that has no equal, whether we consider the number of persons, places, and vicissitudes involved, or the real importance of the interests at stake. It is, in fact, the very width and diversity of the subject matter which help to make it difficult to weave into one connected narrative. Yet, it is not without a centre. There is a unity in the subject strong enough to give form to the multitude of details, if only it can be properly handled. The problem for a writer must therefore be the accomplishment of this. Is there any hope of rising to his great argument, at least so far as to furnish an intelligible sketch of the mighty panorama unrolled before him? Nothing less than this hope assuredly would give heart to anyone to attempt the task. In such an enterprise as this a perfect work is, of course, out of the question. An outline that shall be true as far as it goes, not indeed showing everything, but mindful of balance and proportion and connection, would recompense much toil. And this is all that the present book aims at. To present that matchless story from one point of view in a way that any reader can understand, carrying him on from age to age and from land to land without undue weariness or distraction, but not forgetting the abiding centre and living unity which govern it, this has been the author's aim.Hence, although the plan of the book has needed some thought, and its details not inconsiderable labour, it can lay no claim to be a work of research. It has no new and startling secrets to reveal, no abstruse theories to discuss. It would not be a field adequate for such; but nothing has been put down which did not seem warranted by the facts.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Notre Dame De Paris Vol 1 Classic Reprint

Download or read book Notre Dame De Paris Vol 1 Classic Reprint written by Victor Hugo and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-23 with total page 274 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Notre-Dame De Paris, Vol. 1 A few years ago, while visiting or, rather, rummaging about notre-dame, the author of this book found, in an obscure nook of one of the towers, the following word, engraved by hand upon the wall: These Greek capitals, black with age, and quite deeply graven in the stone, with I know not what signs peculiar to Gothic caligraphy imprinted upon their forms and upon their attitudes, as though with the purpose of revealing that it had been a hand of the Middle Ages which had inscribed them there, and especially the fatal and melancholy meaning contained in them, struck the author deeply. He questioned himself; he sought to divine who could have been that soul in torment which had not been willing to quit this world without leaving this stigma of crime or unhappi ness upon the brow of the ancient church. Book The History of the Riverside Church in the City of New York

Download or read book The History of the Riverside Church in the City of New York written by Peter J. Paris and published by NYU Press. This book was released on 2004-05-01 with total page 511 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It was from the pulpit of the Riverside Church that Martin Luther King, Jr., first publicly voiced his opposition to the Vietnam War, that Nelson Mandela addressed U.S. church leaders after his release from prison, and that speakers as diverse as Cesar Chavez, Jesse Jackson, Desmond Tutu, Fidel Castro, and Reinhold Niebuhr lectured church and nation about issues of the day. The greatest of American preachers have served as senior minister, including Harry Emerson Fosdick, Robert J. McCracken, Ernest T. Campbell, William Sloane Coffin, Jr., and James A. Forbes, Jr., and at one time the New York Times printed reports of each Sunday's sermon in its Monday morning edition. For seven decades the church has served as the premier model of Protestant liberalism in the United States. Its history represents the movement from white Protestant hegemony to a multiracial and multiethnic church that has been at the vanguard of social justice advocacy, liberation theologies, gay and lesbian ministries, peace studies, ethnic and racial dialogue, and Jewish-Christian relations. A collaborative effort by a stellar team of scholars, The History of the Riverside Church in the City of New York offers a critical history of this unique institution on Manhattan's Upper West Side, including its cultural impact on New York City and beyond, its outstanding preachers, and its architecture, and assesses the shifting fortunes of religious progressivism in the twentieth century.

Book Seventeen Years in Paris

Download or read book Seventeen Years in Paris written by H. E. Noyes and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-02 with total page 202 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Seventeen Years in Paris: A Chaplain's Story It may be true that in small chaplaincies in lonely places, with but few English people in residence, men get out of touch with Church life and work in England, but it is not the same in the permanent chaplaincies in thickly populated places. In Paris we had our organisations much as at home. Daily Services, Sunday Schools, Mothers' Meetings; Visitors, etc., and although the numbers attending (owing to distance) were not so great as at home, the work was much the same. I have given several hints which I trust may be useful to parents intending to send their children abroad for education, and also to those who may be purposing to reside in Paris. As we are going to press the notice appears in the papers of the death Of Sir Edmund Monson, formerly Ambassador in Paris. The country loses in him a distinguished and faithful servant, and all who knew him will regret a kind and generous friend. Book The Churches Of Paris From Clovis To Charles X

Download or read book The Churches Of Paris From Clovis To Charles X written by Sophia Beale and published by . This book was released on 2020-06-06 with total page 298 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Churches Of Paris From Clovis To Charles X This book is a result of an effort made by us towards making a contribution to the preservation and repair of original classic literature. In an attempt to preserve, improve and recreate the original content, we have worked towards: 1. Type-setting & Reformatting: The complete work has been re-designed via professional layout, formatting and type-setting tools to re-create the same edition with rich typography, graphics, high quality images, and table elements, giving our readers the feel of holding a 'fresh and newly' reprinted and/or revised edition, as opposed to other scanned & printed (Optical Character Recognition - OCR) reproductions. 2. Correction of imperfections: As the work was re-created from the scratch, therefore, it was vetted to rectify certain conventional norms with regard to typographical mistakes, hyphenations, punctuations, blurred images, missing content/pages, and/or other related subject matters, upon our consideration. Every attempt was made to rectify the imperfections related to omitted constructs in the original edition via other references. However, a few of such imperfections which could not be rectified due to intentional\unintentional omission of content in the original edition, were inherited and preserved from the original work to maintain the authenticity and construct, relevant to the work. We believe that this work holds historical, cultural and/or intellectual importance in the literary works community, therefore despite the oddities, we accounted the work for print as a part of our continuing effort towards preservation of literary work and our contribution towards the development of the society as a whole, driven by our beliefs. We are grateful to our readers for putting their faith in us and accepting our imperfections with regard to preservation of the historical content. HAPPY READING!
