Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Old Town-House of Boston From the infant days of the struggling puritan settlement, gathered upon the Peninsula of Shawmut, nestling in the low land lying between Beacon, Fort and Copp's Hills, and follow ing the water line of the Town Dock, now'covered by the pres ent Quincy Market and streets abutting upon it even farther inland, this site has, been one of central interest. Here, upon land now forming the present corner of State and Dev onshire streets, the fathers of early Boston consecrated with prayer and psalm, their first religious edifice, and it was here, also, that they first held their deliberations upon the conduct of their temporal affairs. As early as 1634, according to an unquestionable authority, a parcel of grwd, definately rec ognized and described in the Book of Possessiom, under date of eleven years later, was set apart as a market place. This estate, the area of which has never been curtailed or widened, is to-day intact, enclosed within the walls of the Old State House. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Prytaneum Bostoniense: Notes on the History of the Old State House Formerly Known as the Town House in Boston the Court House in Boston the Province Court House the State House and the City Hall I have not discovered how long Dudley kept the Queen's portrait at his own house in Roxbury - but it was placed in the Town House where it belonged before the fire in 1711 in which that house was destroyed. The Royal Picture Gallery thus seems to have had its origin in the time of Queen Anne. Chalmers states that Queen Anne gave her portrait to every colony; and more than intimates a degree of churlishness in Massachusetts on its reception there. A trivial fact throws additional light on the temper Of that assembly: [1706 - 7] they refused to address the queen, in return for her portrait, wherewith she had honored every colony, though the compliment, demanded by the civility of a woman, far less the respect due to the condescension of their sovereign, had impugned no privilege, had imposed no duty, had enforced no act of Parliament. Download or read book Notes on the History of the Old State House written by George Henry Moore and published by . This book was released on 2015-08-04 with total page 86 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Notes on the History of the Old State House: Formerly Known as the Town House in Boston the Court House in Boston the Province Court House the State House and the City Hall The kind, I may say cordial, reception given to my former paper of Notes on the History of the Old State House has encouraged me again to take up the thread and follow out the subject. I broke off at that point in the history, when in November, 1776, the Legislature of the State of Massachusetts Bay met for the first time within these walls. No longer Colony or Province, but State! No longer awaiting any "accommodation" with royal authority, but then and thereafter one of the great Union of free and independent States of America - that body of States in union to whom thenceforward belonged the sovereignty which the King of Great Britain was obliged to relinquish. The change of name was significant and it was not reached or established without " great searchings of heart," even in Massachusetts, where rebellion is said to have been at a premium at a very early date. As we review the history of this venerated structure, we cannot fail to recall those men of old whose names are identified with its ancient glories. "There were giants in those days." I am not aware that its doors were ever darkened by Kings or Princes of the earth - excepting when the chiefs of native tribes of Indians may have stood here as delegates of their people or as prisoners and hostages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Focusing on the economic culture of colonial New England, Heavenly Merchandize views commerce through the eyes of four generations of Boston merchants, drawing upon their personal letters, diaries, business records, and sermon notes to reveal how merchants built a modern form of exchange out of profound transitions in the puritan understanding of discipline, providence, and the meaning of New England. --From publisher's description.
