Download or read book The Story of the New Testament Classic Reprint written by Edgar Johnson Goodspeed and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-15 with total page 166 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Story of the New Testament It must always be remembered that Christianity did not spring from the New Testament but the New Testament from Christianity. Christianity did not begin as a religion of books but as a religion of spirit. There was neither time nor need to write books when the Lord Jesus was at the very doors. Still less was there need of authoritative books to guide men whose dominant conviction was that they had the Mind of Christ, the very Spirit Of God, guiding them constantly from within. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Story of the Revised New Testament: American Standard Edition It was necessary in telling this story to begin at the inception of the movement for Revision. Hence this little book repeats many facts that were published when, and immediately after, the Revised New Testa ment of 1881 appeared. But another gener ation has grown up since that date, and much well known to Biblical scholars will be new to most readers to - day. Yet, even in telling of the labors before 1881, the writer, from his connection with the American Company of New Testament Revisers, has been able to include many facts not known to the general public. The account of the preparation of the Standard Edition of the American Revised New Testament has never been published before, and the writer has found, from many letters of inquiry, that little is known about the details. The same inquiries indicate a desire to learn the facts as here briefly presented. Thirty-five years have passed since the work began, and this sketch has been penned in the desire and hope of making these long years of labor. Book The New Testament Today Classic Reprint

Download or read book The New Testament Today Classic Reprint written by Ernest Findlay Scott and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-23 with total page 96 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The New Testament Today Arouse suspicions of its message than those attempts to conceal or explain away the facts of its origin. The time has surely come when we should try to exchange the old attitude to scripture for one that will be more consistent with the results of modern enquiry. These results, it may be granted, are often one-sided, and in every matter of detail are Open to revision. Those who are best acquainted with them will be the first to admit that they are by no means final. But the main conclu sions at which modern scholars have arrived can no longer be questioned, and have to be taken into account in our estimate of the book. If it is to exercise its proper influence on the new age it must be presented as it really is, not as an ignorant piety has imagined it. The aim of the following chapters is to help, in some small way, towards the new presentation. The book of the primitive church was composed so long ago, out of so many strange elements, that it might seem to have nothing but a historical interest for the mind of our time. Yet it has proved itself, - and never more so than in these changeful days, - to be the most living of all books. Its conceptions of man's needs and duties, of his relation to God and to his fellow-men, have stood every test, and are likely to be enduring. How is it that the ancient book has this permanent value? It was formerly assumed that the riddle could only be answered by a theory of direct inspiration; but such a theory is no longer possible, nor is it necessary. Nothing essen tial is lost to the New Testament when we allow for the historical process whereby it came into being. Its permanent message becomes in many ways more intel ligible, and can be applied more closely to actual needs and circumstances. In any case, the book must be understood in the light of modern knowledge before it can fully appeal to the modern world. In these days. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The New Testament Story: Retold for Young People High up among the wild hills of the country that was once called Galileg is a little town, built in a sort of cup or basin that seem's;to be scooped out of the face of the cliff. If you loom it across the great green plain below, when the sun is shining at noon on its white houses, this little town seems like a patch of snow left unmelted on the dull brown hills. If you climb the steep, winding path among the rocks - a very tiring scramble for a hot day - you will see that the houses are planted on any level bit of ground that can be found, so that when you go out of one house you almost step on the roof of another. There are no regular streets - only narrow lanes, and in some places flights of stone steps leading from house to house. This is Nazareth. At the time of Jesus it was a larger and more important place than it is to-day. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Making of the New Testament The New Testament presents the paradox of a literature born of protest against the tyranny of a canon, yet ultimately canonized itself through an increasing demand for/ external authority. This paradox is full of significance. We must examine it more closely. The work of Jesus was a consistent effort} to set religion free from the deadening system of the scribes. He was conscious of a direct, divine authority. The broken lights of former inspiration are lost in the full dawn of God's presence to His soul. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from New Testament History: A Study of the Beginnings of Christianity This history might be more strictly called a study of the beginnings of Christianity. While designed primarily for use as a college textbook, it should be of equal value to any reader who wishes to trace the story of Christianity in its first days. This is first Of all a historical study. The average man has been wont to regard Christianity as a fixed and finished something that has been dropped down from the skies. If you speak of the Christian religion he will think first of all of a collection of writings, or of a body of doctrine, or Of the institution of the church. But these three, Bible and doctrine and church, are simply the products of a greater movement that lies back of them. To understand Christi amity we must go back to this great current of life which was at once the greatest revelation of the divine Spirit and the greatest movement of the human spirit that mankind has known. What was the world to which this new life came? What did its Founder teach and do? How did the world brotherhood come out of the little company of Jews that followed him? This book was released on 2018-02-03 with total page 370 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Outlines of New Testament History The present is a companion volume to the Outlines Of Jewish History published some months ago. It deals with the historical data supplied by the inspired writings Of the New Testament, in exactly the same manner as the pre ceding work did with the various events recorded in the sacred books Of the Old Testament. In both volumes the writer has pursued the same purpose and followed the same methods. Both works have been prepared for the special use Of theological students, not, however, without the hope that they may prove serviceable to a much larger number Of readers, such as teachers Of Bible history in Sunday-schools, colleges, academies, and the like. In neither volume has it been the aim Of the writer to supply a substitute for the Bible itself, but rather a help towards a more careful perusal Of the inspired record. With this purpose in view, he has set forth such results of modern investigation as may render the sacred narrative more intelligible and attractive. Many Of the difficulties which are daily being raised on historical grounds are also touched upon, and the biblical student is supplied with constant references to further sources of in formation. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Stories From the New Testament For such a purpose there is no better material than that found in the Bible stories. Not only does the Bible form the basis of the literature and culture of Christendom, but on its stories and teaching the consciousness of our race has been developed and nourished for many generations. About the Bible stories, whatever maybe the theory held in regard to their inspiration, there clings a certain reverence and awe that is not to be found elsewhere. And as a consequence they have a higher value than other stories for ethical instruction and religious awakening. Book Canon and Text of the New Testament Classic Reprint

This book was released on 2017-10-19 with total page 578 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Canon and d104 of the New Testament The consideration of the canon and the text of the New Testament forms a preface to the study of what is called intro duction. It is true that these two topics have sometimes of late years been remanded to the close of introduction, have been treated in a somewhat perfunctory way, and have been threatened with exclusion from the field. The earlier habit of joining them together and placing them at the front was much more correct. Now and then they were termed as a whole general introduc tion. The rest of introduction, the criticism of the contents of the books in and for themselves, was then called special introduction. The use of these names does not seem to me to be necessary. The introduction to the study of the New Testament is made up of three criticisms, of the critical treatment of three things. Download or read book The Text of the New Testament Classic Reprint written by K. Lake and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-06 with total page 116 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Text of the New Testament One of the most necessary parts of the investigations of historians is to criticise the documents on which their researches are based, in order to be certain that the text which they are using really represents the original writing of the author. This criticism is usually known as Textual criticism, for the obvious reason that it deals with the test as opposed to the subject-matter. It is less commonly termed the Lower as Opposed to the Higher criticism, which deals not with the text as written by the author or editor of the document in question, but with the sources and methods used by him in making the text. Thus Higher criticism approaches the subject at a point higher 11 the stream of its existence. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Rise of the New Testament Very frequently the question is asked Where can I find a short and readable account in English of the formation of our New Testament? The following brief outline, with all its shortcomings, is offered to supply the obvious need disclosed by the unsatisfactory, but only truthful, an swer to that question There is none. Furthermore, it is desirable in theological and religious discussion not only that the results of scholarship be published, but also that the historic method of scholar ship be explained, as it is important that the general reader, as well as the special student, should understand, in so far as possible, the movements which produced the results. It is hoped that the following pages will supply this need as well. I know of no great period of religious awakening or of moral-reform that has not owed its vitality to the faith of the people. Download or read book The First Printed English New Testament Classic Reprint written by William Tyndale and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-20 with total page 154 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The First Printed English New Testament At the outset, however, we must limit this testimony to these first two editions only. Afterwards came 'thicker and threefold' into England, editions both of the New Testament and of the Bible. Some of these attempted an accurate authenticity, being produced solely from a love to God and Truth others were surreptitiously and often carelessly produced by speculators, for the mere sake of money. All these can only be rightly analysed and adjudged in a thorough and complete History of the English Bible, both manuscript and printed.' A work yet to be written; though the way has been made smoother by such pioneers as Rev. J. Fqrshall, Sir F. Madden; Revs. J. Lewis, H. Cotton, Canon B. F. West cott Messrs. Lea wilson, C. Anderson, G. Offor, F. Fry, and others. Such a work would be based upon deep sacred interest. It would record a marvellous story of human heroism and self denial, of untiring effort and labour. It would catalogue all known editions, all accessnble early copies, and point out their various difl'erences. And, with it, would be largely in terwoven the political and social history of what may be looked upon as our Biblical Century - that hundred years, roughly speakin of incessant Biblical translation and revision, which was crowned wit]? That literary marvel, the present authorized version. What Froude has done for the Court and Political History of our Reformation what Macaulay for twenty years later on in our National History; might, with even a more interesting subject - the most interesting of all literary subjects to many - be done for the Story of the Word of God in English. Is any man so bold, so earnest, so devout, as to attempt this work i In adducing this Testimony from original sources, and in eliminating it from the confusion of many conflicting and perplexing statements, it will be convenient to quote each passage, once for all, in its principal place though it may occasionally anticipate somewhat in time, or contain traneous matter. Book Historical Evidences of the New Testament Classic Reprint

Download or read book Historical Evidences of the New Testament Classic Reprint written by and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-21 with total page 326 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Historical Evidences of the New Testament SO accustomed are we to regard the New Tes tament as one book, the work of a single writer, that we are apt to forget and overlook the variety of its contents. It consists of twenty-seven sep arate and independent documents, composed by eight or nine different persons at very different times and under the most varied circumstances. The works of the writers of the Old Testament fall under the head of history proper. They set before us primarily and mainly the history of a nation. In the New Testament all this is changed. The authors of the Gospels are not in any sense historians of their nation. They are biographers of Christ. Even the writer of the Acts of the Apostles confines himself to the doings of those whose business it was to spread abroad the doc trines taught by Christ throughout the world. The points, therefore, where the documents of the New Testament touch upon history proper are not direct, but indirect, and the allusions are and must be incidental. But for this very reason they are extremely important as respects their evidential value. Why? Because, in the first place, to maintain accuracy in the wide field of incidental allusions is a matter of the utmost diffi culty, and no one but an honest, truthful writer would venture on such a perilous experiment at all. Because, in the second place, historical ac curacy in reference to minute incidental allusions is utterly at variance with the mythical spirit, of which the narrative contained in the New Testa ment is sometimes affirmed to be the product. If the whole story is a myth, fabricated ab its composers would have had no object in maintain ing historical accuracy at all, or in being careful that their facts agreed with the testimony of con temporary classical writers.
