Download or read book STORY OF THE LANCASHIRE CONGRE written by Benjamin Nightingale and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-09-05 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Story of the Lancashire Congregational Union, 1806-1906: Centenary Memorial Volume; Prepared at the Request of the Union Of portraits, letters, etc., illustrating old time Nonconformist Church life, which he has been diligently collecting for many years; whilst the pastors and deacons of the Grosvenor Street and Cavendish Street Churches respectively afforded every facility for consulting the important documents in their possession. To Mr. Hewitson, of The Bury Times, I am under obligation for information respecting the Kay family; and a great company of others have vied with one another in their willing service. The book is the property of the Union, having been undertaken at its request and issued under its imprimatur. It has to be admitted that the task has not been easy, especially that part of it which deals with the second half of the century's work, which fails to yield the sort of incident needed for a book such as this set out to be. It is, however, hoped that it has so far succeeded in its aim that it will contribute, along with the other parts of the Centenary programme, towards exciting new interest in, and securing more loving and consecrated service for, that Congregationalism whose history is one of which we may be justly proud, and which, if true to its ideals, will ever be amongst the most needed of the religious forces of the day. Book excerpt: "Carrying the inquiry into zones previous itineraries have typically avoided—the creation of races, sexual relations, invention of tradition, and regional rulers' strategies for dealing with the conquerors—the book brings out features of European expansion and contraction we have not seen well before."—Charles Tilly, The New School for Social Research "What is important about this book is its commitment to shaping theory through the careful interpretation of grounded, empirically-based historical and ethnographic studies. . . . By far the best collection I have seen on the subject."—Sherry B. Ortner, Columbia University

Book excerpt: Sir Ernest George (1839-1922) was one of England's greatest architects of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. He specialised in domestic work and was responsible for beautiful and imaginative houses in both town and country, and with his three successive partners, he carried out over 200 works both in Britain and abroad. He was also a watercolourist of considerable stature whose work in the medium was acclaimed in his own time. This richly illustrated book is the first study of the man and his work and will establish him as one of the major names in his profession. His life and career is fully documented, the buildings are described and a full catalogue of works is provided. A special feature is a study of pupils and assistants who passed through George's office, including several who went on to be famous and successful - Edwin Lutyens, Guy Dawber, J. J. Joass, R. Weir Schultz - and also the first woman to be become a member of the Royal Institute of British Architects, Ethel Mary Charles. Hilary Grainger is a dean at the London College of Fashion and is the recognised expert on George and his architecture. She is also a leading authority on the architecture of cremation and is the chair of the Victorian Society.
