Excerpt: ...even his opinions and theories in themselves, that gave him his unquestioned authority among the geologists of his time. His influence and fame sprang mainly from the personality of the man. His unwearied enthusiasm and eager zeal in the furtherance of his favourite studies, his kindness and helpfulness, his wide range of knowledge, and the vivacity, perspicuity, and eloquence with which he communicated it, his absolute confidence in the solidity of his theoretical doctrines--these were the sources of his power rather than the originality and importance of his own contributions to geology. His followers, indeed, captivated by the precision of his system and its apparent applicability in any and every country, claimed for him the highest place in the ranks of those who had studied the history of the earth. But the exaggeration of their claim was amply shown by the rapidity with which the Wernerian doctrines began to fall into disrepute even before the death of their author. CHAPTER VIII The Wernerian School of Geology. Its great initial influence and subsequent decline. Effect of the controversy about the origin of Basalt upon this School. Early history of Volcanic Geology. History of opinion regarding Earthquakes. In tracing the influence of Werner's teaching upon the progress of geological inquiry, we must begin by the full and frank acknowledgment that when all objections and qualifications have been made regarding his theoretical opinions, the momentous fact remains that by his personal example and contagious enthusiasm he rendered a vast service to the science. He awakened a far more widespread interest in the ancient history of the earth than had ever before existed, and even where his pupils found reason eventually to abandon many...

Book Great Geological Controversies

Download or read book Great Geological Controversies written by Anthony Hallam and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 1983 with total page 196 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Here is a new edition of a widely acclaimed account of the most celebrated controversies in the history of geology--a book that covers many of the most important ideas that have emerged since the birth of the science. Among the great debates described here are those involving catastrophe theory, uniformitarianism, the discovery of the Ice Age, speculation concerning the age of the earth, and the advent of new ideas on plate tectonics and continental drift. In presenting these key topics, the author opens the fascinating history of geology to a wide audience. Frequently citing original sources, the author gives readers a sense of the colorful and at times immensely entertaining language of scientific discourse. This edition includes a new chapter on the emergence of stratigraphy in the nineteenth century, focusing on controversies surrounding the Cambrian-Silurian and Devonian. Another new chapter reviews the mass extinction theory, which is still hotly debated. Other chapters have been revised to reflect recent developments and changes in the field. Authoritative and highly readable, this unique work will interest all readers interested in the history of science and especially the origin of the prevailing ideas in geology today.

Book The Geological History of the Connecticut Valley of Massachusetts

Download or read book The Geological History of the Connecticut Valley of Massachusetts written by William John Miller and published by . This book was released on 2017-07-07 with total page 84 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Geological History of the Connecticut Valley of Massachusetts: A Popular Account of Its Rocks and OriginThe purpose of this little book is to present, in popular form, the salient points in the geological history of the Connecticut Valley of Massachusetts. The beautiful valley and its charming boundary hills may in truth be said to be a geologist's paradise. In regard to variety of geological phenomena, few districts of equal size in North America surpass it. To most of its residents the marvelous story of the Connecticut Valley and adjacent hills as recorded in nature's book of the rocks is unknown. Beginning with the oldest decipherable records and leading up to the present time, it is my pleasure, in the following pages, to explain to the layman the principal known events in the wonderful geological history of the Connecticut Valley, including the origin of the valley as we see it today. The use of technical and unusual terms has been reduced to a minimum compatible with a reasonable understanding of the subject. Each of the few technical terms is explained where first used in the text.Since so many of the great principles of earth science (geology) are wonderfully illustrated in the Connecticut Valley and the adjacent highlands, it is my hope that this book may furnish the basis and inspiration to many people of the region for understanding and interpreting not only the principal records of the rocks, but also the important processes and laws of the science of geology illustrated by these records. To aid in the accomplishment of this purpose, simplified, largely nontechnical, scientific discussions are entered into. In order to make the conclusions more impressive and realistic actual easily accessible localities, carefully selected out of my field experience, are cited to illustrate each stage in the tremendously long history of the region. I am not satisfied to say to the reader, for example, long ages ago, according to geologists, the sea spread over central western Massachusetts. My purpose is to be much more precise than that, and to give the reader at least some of the geological reasoning upon which such conclusions are based.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book A Brief History of Geology

Download or read book A Brief History of Geology written by Kieran D. O'Hara and published by . This book was released on 2018 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Geology as a science has a fascinating and controversial history. Kieran D. O'Hara's book provides a brief and accessible account of the major events in the history of geology over the last two hundred years, from early theories of Earth structure during the Reformation, through major controversies over the age of the Earth during the Industrial Revolution, to the more recent twentieth-century development of plate tectonic theory, and on to current ideas concerning the Anthropocene. Most chapters include a short 'text box' providing more technical and detailed elaborations on selected topics. The book also includes a history of the geology of the Moon, a topic not normally included in books on the history of geology. The book will appeal to students of Earth science, researchers in geology who wish to learn more about the history of their subject, and general readers interested in the history of science.

Book Principles of Geology Volume 2

Download or read book Principles of Geology Volume 2 written by Charles Lyell and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 1990 with total page 358 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As important to modern world views as any work of Darwin, Marx, or Freud, Principles of Geology is a landmark in the history of science. In this first of three volumes, Charles Lyell (1797-1875) sets forth his powerful uniformitarian argument: processes now visibly acting in the natural world are essentially the same as those that have acted throughout the history of the earth, and are sufficient to account for all geological phenomena. Martin J. S. Rudwick's new Introduction, summarizing the origins of the Principles, guides the reader through the structure of the entire three-volume first edition and considers the legacy of Lyell's great work. -- from back cover.
