Book Where the Cherry Tree Grew

Download or read book Where the Cherry Tree Grew written by Philip Levy and published by Macmillan. This book was released on 2013-02-12 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Noted historian pens biography of Ferry Farm—George Washington's boyhood home—and its three centuries of American history In 2002, Philip Levy arrived on the banks of Rappahannock River in Virginia to begin an archeological excavation of Ferry Farm, the eight hundred acre plot of land that George Washington called home from age six until early adulthood. Six years later, Levy and his team announced their remarkable findings to the world: They had found more than Washington family objects like wig curlers, wine bottles and a tea set. They found objects that told deeper stories about family life: a pipe with Masonic markings, a carefully placed set of oyster shells suggesting that someone in the household was practicing folk magic. More importantly, they had identified Washington's home itself—a modest structure in line with lower gentry taste that was neither as grand as some had believed nor as rustic as nineteenth century art depicted it. Levy now tells the farm's story in Where the Cherry Tree Grew. The land, a farmstead before Washington lived there, gave him an education in the fragility of life as death came to Ferry Farm repeatedly. Levy then chronicles the farm's role as a Civil War battleground, the heated later battles over its preservation and, finally, an unsuccessful attempt by Wal-Mart to transform the last vestiges Ferry Farm into a vast shopping plaza.

In his long career Kerry battled fuel system malfunctions over the Atlantic, a total electrical failure at night over the Sahara, getting lost over Africa and being struck by lightning off the coast of Portugal. Kerry's almost insatiable, reckless quest for danger and adventure also led to putting international smuggler and bank robber on his resume. Kerry found the answer to the question "what could possibly go wrong?" time and time again. But his skill, ingenuity and luck were what allowed him to survive the countless mishaps, catastrophes and close calls including a nearly fatal plane crash. While "Ferry Pilot" is an account of one man's crazy thirst for thrills and adventure, his coming to grips with the dangerous nature of his career and just how much he wants to test the depth of his luck bag. It's also a portrait of the perseverance and bravery of a devoted family man who lost many close friends and his first wife to the dangerous skies.

Download or read book The Ferry Stories written by Stephen Camp and published by . This book was released on 2018-03-13 with total page 189 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Ferry Stories is a fairytale book set by a small mysterious river, with a small ferry to cross it. It contains the stories of the generations of ferrymen and ferry women who live there, as well as the travelers that pass through. This book was inspired by a small ferry that crosses an ocean channel in Ketchikan, Alaska. The ferry must be used by all who need to fly as the city is on one island and the airport is on another one. I travel on the ferry often because I work at that airport, and have for over a decade. One day while waiting to board the ferry a thought occurred to me: many stories feature a boatman or a water crossing, but you rarely know anything about these faceless ferrymen and their lives.I have had a love of fantasy and fairytale from my youth, and many of my favorite stories came to mind featuring ferries, bridges, barges, lake boats, ocean crossings, or really any crossing. In each story it is the crossing that is of importance and the main characters are the ones traveling from one place to another. In this book the ferrymen themselves are the main characters, and their crossings are both literal and metaphorical. No person has heard more stories than the ferrymen, and their lives are more fulfilling than you might think.

Book The Strange Story of Harper s Ferry

Download or read book The Strange Story of Harper s Ferry written by Joseph Barry and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-11 with total page 246 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Strange Story of Harper's Ferry: With Legends of the Surrounding Country The real story of Harper's Ferry is sad, and but little less wild and romantic than the old-time legends that abound in the long settled country around. The facts of the story we give with scrupulous exactness. We, ourselves, have witnessed many of the most important incidents narrated and, for what happened before our time, we have the evidence of old settlers of the highest character and veracity. The legends are consistent, even though they may have no other claim on our consideration. They never have more than one version, although one narrator may give more facts than another. The narratives never contradict one another in any material way, which goes to show that there was a time when everybody around believed the main facts. Book Over and Back

Download or read book Over and Back written by Brian J. Cudahy and published by Fordham Univ Press. This book was released on 1990 with total page 504 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ask the average American anywhere in the country to answer the association question "Staten Island" and you get "Ferry" in immediate response. what is regularly billed as "America's favorite boatride"- not least because a round trip still costs an astonishing twenty-five cents- is the last public survivor of New York Harbor's once immense fleet of those doughty double-ended ferryboats. Dozens of ferryboats in a myriad of liveries crossed the harbor's waterways as recently as one generation ago Most have vanished as though they never were, leaving in their ghostly wakes only fading memories and a few gorgeously restored ferry terminals. The handsomest of these terminals, on the New Jersey side of the Hudson, is probably the one dubbed by Christopher Morley the Piazza San Lackawanna. Over and Back captures definatively nearly two centuries of ferryboating in New York Harbor, by a master narrator of the history of transportation in America. In stories, charts, maps, photographs, diagrams, route lists, fleet rosters, and in the histories of some four hundred ferryboats, Brian J. Cudahy captures the whole tale as concisely as one could hope. The transportation expert, the ferry buff, the model builder, the urban historian: each will find grist for his or her mill. The photographs capture a highly significant footnote in America's past and present; the colored illustrations preserve some of the stylish rigs in which the owners garbed their boats, despite coal soot, oil smudge, and urban grime. Fully a third of the book comprises the most complete statistical compilation that the nation's public and private archives permit. The data show, among other things, that some of the former workhorses of New York Harbor are filling utilitarian or social roles elsewhere in the United States and overseas, and that the newest boats in the harbor began life along the Gulf of Mexico and in New England.
