Book excerpt: A VILLAGE AND ITS PEOPLE THROUGH THE WHOLE OF ENGLISH HISTORY The village of Kibworth in Leicestershire lies at the very centre of England. It has a church, some pubs, the Grand Union Canal, a First World War Memorial - and many centuries of recorded history. Bought in the thirteenth century by William de Merton, who founded Merton College, Oxford, it also lodges 750 years of village history. Michael Wood tells the extraordinary story of one English community over fifteen centuries - from the moment that the Roman Emperor Honorius sent his famous letter in 410 advising the English to look to their own defences to the village as it is today. He builds on this unique archive, enlisting the help of Kibworth's inhabitants in a village-wide archaeological dig and the first complete DNA profile of an English village. The story of Kibworth is the story of England itself, a Who Do You Think You Are? for the entire nation. 'Better than any historian for decades, Wood brings home not just the ways in which buildings, landscapes and written texts may be read, but the sensual beauty of encounters with them' TLS

Book excerpt: We often find our knowledge of England's past quite sketchy. This is a small book that condenses English-British history from the earliest times to the early twentieth century. It is a good book to get an overview of England's past. The author has shown what we owe to the British nations. The reader will find the American touch in this book frequent and illuminating. We understand our own history best when we know that of Great Britain. The story also shows what changes the English themselves have passed through, and what Old World notions our fathers rejected, besides making clear what they borrowed from "Mighty England." There is no concealment as to what Americans love or hate in British history.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Short History of the English People is a book written by English historian John Richard Green. Originally published in 1874, "it is a history, not of English Kings or English Conquests, but of the English People." Green began work on the book in 1869, having been given only six months to live after being hit hard by disease that had plagued him throughout his life. Only having around 800 pages to write on, he had to leave out much of what he wanted to include. Green intentionally left out the battles of England feeling they did not play a big role in the formation of the nation, saying that historians "too often turned history into a mere record of the butchery of men by their fellow men." His new ideas, and omission of information that others felt important, meant Green was criticized by other historians as well as the people close to him. Others thought highly of the book, including Francis Adams, who used quotations from the book in his poem 'The Peasants' Revolt'.--Wikipedia (accessed 28 October 2022).

A Short History of England sheds new light on all the key individuals and events in English history by bringing them together in an enlightening account of the country's birth, rise to global prominence, and then partial eclipse. Written with flair and authority by Guardian columnist and London Times former editor Simon Jenkins, this is the definitive narrative of how today's England came to be. Concise but comprehensive, with more than a hundred color illustrations, this beautiful single-volume history will be the standard work for years to come.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Mighty England: The Story of the English People To write this book for young Americans, I travelled eight times in England and also visited often Ger many, the Netherlands, and France - countries from which the ancestors of the English people, for the most part, came. It was like tracing a river to its source to go back from the island to the High Dutch Of the German mountains, and like drifting down the flood to stay among the Low Dutch in Holland and Belgium. In France it was more like sailing on the lake, and in Italy, like rowing on a pond. Out Of these countries streams of men and influence have flowed into Great Britain. Yet it was from the Germanic and Norse lands that the great body of ideas and customs of the many tribes that made the English nation came. I have gone into caves and crypts, seen barrows and mounds excavated, and visited the old moot places of the Salic Franks, as well as museums and archives, and have seen corona tions, parades, and pageants. I have studied what my friend, the late Edward A. Freeman, called Eng lish People in its Three Homes. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
