Book Constantinople the Story of the Old Capital of the Empire Classic Reprint

Download or read book Constantinople the Story of the Old Capital of the Empire Classic Reprint written by William Holden Hutton and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-11 with total page 376 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Constantinople the Story of the Old Capital of the Empire A Word of introduction is necessary to explain the nature of this sketch of the history Constantinople. It is the holiday-task, very pleasant to him, of a College don, to whom there is no city in the world so impressive and so fascinating as the ancient home of the Caesars of the East. It is not intended to supersede the indispensable Murray. For a city so great, in which there is so much to see, a guide-book full of practical details is absolutely necessary. For this I can refer the reader, with entire confidence, to Murray's Hand-book - and to nothing else. But I think everyone who visits Constantinople feels the need of some sketch of its long and wonderful history. I have myself often felt the need as I wandered about the city, or spent a long evening, during the cold spring, in the hotel. I have endeavoured, as best I could, to supply what I have myself wanted. I do not pretend to have written a history of the city "from the earliest times to the present day" from the mass of original authorities of which I know something. I have used the works of the best modern writers freely, and I should like here, once for all, to express my obligations. I may venture to say that the list of books I here insert will be found useful by anyone who wishes to go further into the history than my little book is able to take him. Book The Byzantine Empire Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Byzantine Empire Classic Reprint written by Charles William Chadwick Oman and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-14 with total page 394 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Byzantine Empire Fifty years ago the word Byzantine was used as a synonym for all that was corrupt and decadent, and the tale of the east-roman Empire was dis missed by modern historians as depressing and monotonous. The great Gibbon had branded the successors of Justinian and Heraclius as a series of vicious weaklings, and for several generations no one dared to contradict him. Two books have served to undeceive the English reader, the monumental work of Finlay, published in 1856, and the more modern volumes of Mr. Bury, which appeared in 1889. Since they have written, the Byzantines no longer need an apologist, and the great work of the east-roman Empire in holding back the Saracen, and in keeping alive throughout the Dark Ages the lamp of learning, is beginning to be realized. Download or read book The Hittites written by Archibald Henry Sayce and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-12 with total page 150 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Hittites: The Story of a Forgotten Empire is a history text written by A.H. Sayce and an excellent example of the early historical research conducted on the topic. The Hittites were an Anatolian people living in what is now Turkey, Syria, and Lebanon. The empire started in the 18th century BCE, peaking in the 14th century BCE and finally trailing off around 1180 BCE with the collapse of the Bronze Age. Author Sayce traces the history of the Hittite people, attempting to demonstrate that this was an empire of significance that is not afforded the credit it deserves. The book begins with an analysis of the references to the Hittite people in The Bible, which is an oft-cited source of information throughout Sayce's work. Divided into chapters, the book goes on to explore topics such as Hittite monuments, the Hittite Empire, Hittite cities, Hittite religion and art, and the trade and industry of the Hittities, amongst other topics. Several illustrations are included, primarily of Hittite artifacts. The book concludes with a detailed index. Sayce's history of the Hittites is a commendable effort. The author uses the evidence available to create a compelling argument for the historical importance of the Hittite people. The book is well written and an enjoyable read. The Hittites: The Story of a Forgotten Empire will certainly appeal to history buffs and students. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Governance of Empire The object of presenting this work to the public is twofold. Firstly, as a colonial, my desire is to present a colonial view of the imperial idea, and, secondly, to endeavour to arouse among my countrymen, in the United Kingdom especially, a greater interest and pride in the Empire beyond the seas. My critics may point to the number of able works bearing directly or indirectly upon the British Empire which have been published within recent years, and it may even be said that I am repeating an oft-told tale, that many of the suggestions which I now put forward, with all due deference to these self-same critics, have been made before. My reply is, The thing that hath been, is that which shall be; and that which is done is that which shall be done; and there is no new thing under the sun (eccles. I. Download or read book Men Who Have Made the Empire Classic Reprint written by George Chetwynd Griffith and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-03 with total page 354 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Men Who Have Made the Empire HE Epic of England has yet to be written. It may be that the fulness of time for writing it has not come yet, or it may be that Britain is still waiting for her Homer and her Virgil. Perhaps the matured genius of a Rudyard Kipling, that strong, sweet Singer of the Seven Seas, may some day address itself to the accomplishment of this most splendid of all possible tasks, and then, again, it may be that it is his only to sound the prelude. That is a matter for the gods to decide In their own good time, but this much is certain - that when this work has been worthily done the world will hear echoing through the ages such a thunder-song as has never stirred human hearts before.
