This book was released on 2016-11-09 with total page 466 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Story of the Canadian People The aim of this book is to tell the story of our country simply, yet without sacrificing historical con tent to simplicity. The story is one of colonisation. It tells of failure and success; of French failure through the folly of absolutism, monopoly, and feudalism; of British success through the wisdom of self-government, freedom, and equality. Canada's past is richly stored with those picturesque incidents which make history fascinating as well as instructive. From the blunders of the French crown and the greed of chartered com panics, the reader turns with pleasure to the deeds of martial governors, devoted missionaries, and freedom loving coure'urs de while, later on, his mind finds relief from the serious problems of autonomy and union in the simple scenes of pioneer life, and in the adven tures of explorer or fur-trader of the West, where the romance of earlier days still lives. Book The Book of New Canadians Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Book of New Canadians Classic Reprint written by D. J. Dickie and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-27 with total page 174 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Book of New Canadians The Book of New Canadians contains stories told by the children of twenty different countries. The stories de scribe the homes of about half the nations representatives of which have become citizens of Canada. Realising that it would be impossible in a book of this size to tell stories about all the different peoples now living in Canada, I consulted the latest census report of the Dominion Government. In the report the different nationals are listed in the order of the numbers resident in Canada. I chose the first twenty listed. Equally interesting and instructive stories about the other countries and their peoples could be told. Should these be called for a second book will, no doubt, be prepared. It is perhaps unnecessary to explain why stories of I France have not been included in the book. Since 1763 immigration from France has been very small, and as for the French Canadians they are much more anciently Canadian than the British Canadians. Download or read book Canada and Its Provinces Vol 13 written by Adam Shortt and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-09 with total page 420 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Canada and Its Provinces, Vol. 13: A History of the Canadian People and Their Institutions by One Hundred Associates Up to the time of the Cession in 1763 events in Acadie were inextricably bound up with'events in Canada. The policy which governed at Quebec governed also at Louisbourg, Port la Joye and Port Royal. Opposition to that policy, which originated in London, soon showed itself along the Atlantic seaboard, in harried settlements, in fugitive colonists, and in the sombre figure of the Indian on the forest background. Again, a conversation between two ambassadors in Paris might lead to an interlude of peace, when the innocent and ignorant settlers might pasture their herds on the marais, or plant their little clearings in Ile St Jean. Once more, when the Thirteen Colonies found themselves in rebellion, the Maritime Provinces discovered that they were in the world again. Warships, singly and in fleets, appeared ofl' the coasts. Towns were sacked, ransom was exacted, trade was destroyed; and, on the other hand, settlers turned aside from the peaceful arts of agriculture and fishing to man the privateers and adventure upon the high seas in search of more daring employments.
