Only after Offero has carried the child over the river does he discover the child's true identity. Then Offero's name is changed to Christopher. / Author Margaret Hodges retells with power and simplicity this unforgettable tale of the man who became known as the patron saint of travelers. And illustrator Richard Jesse Watson has created hypnopompic paintings that dramatically capture Offero's journey and the brilliance of his discovery of the One he sought. / Based on old nursery rhymes, the poetic text by Newbery Honor winner Kathi Appelt and the beautiful light-filled paintings of Debra Reid Jenkins combine to make this gentle bedtime story a perfect illustration of God s abiding love.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “A moving evocation of the Italian-American experience, told with grace, compassion, and uncompromising honesty” from the author of A Kiss from Maddalena (Tom Perrotta, New York Times–bestselling author of The Leftovers). It’s 1953 in the tight-knit Italian neighborhood in Wilmington, Delaware. Maddalena Grasso has lost her country, her family, and the man she loved by coming to America; her mercurial husband, Antonio, has lost his opportunity to realize the American Dream; their new friend, Giulio Fabbri, a shy accordion player, has lost his beloved parents. In the shadow of St. Anthony’s Church, named for the patron saint of lost things, the prayers of these troubled but determined people are heard, and fate and circumstances conspire to answer them in unforeseeable ways. With great authenticity and immediacy, The Saint of Lost Things evokes a bittersweet time in which the world seemed more intimate and knowable, and the American Dream was simpler, nobler, and within reach. “Beautifully, and movingly, Castellani shows an uncanny empathy for the American immigrant experience.” —Julia Glass, National Book Award–winning author of Three Junes “A lovely novel filled with characters so fully realized that they . . . leave the fog of their breath on the page.” —Julia Alvarez, author of In the Time of Butterflies “Those who appreciate clear-eyed, unsentimental fiction will find its realism fresh and moving.” —Kirkus Reviews

Book The Story of Saint Christopher and the Story of Saint Cuthbert

Download or read book The Story of Saint Christopher and the Story of Saint Cuthbert written by Mary MacGregor and published by Blurb. This book was released on 2017-11-19 with total page 44 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Two beautifully-written retellings of the legend of St. Christopher-which is largely allegorical-and of the real-life story of St. Cuthbert, one of the most important early Medieval Christian religious figures of northern England, by master storyteller Mary MacGregor. The legend of St. Christopher first appeared in western Europe during the ninth century, and told the story of an extraordinarily tall man named Offero who, after first serving Satan, converted to Christianity and one day unknowingly carried the young Jesus across a river. In this way he was renamed "Christopher" or the "carrier of Christ." Later martyred by pagans, Christopher was canonized by the Catholic Church, and is to this day the patron saint of travellers. There is little concrete evidence that Christopher actually existed, and the legend was most likely derived from the story of Saint Menas, a third century Egyptian in the Roman army, executed for refusing to recant his Christian faith. In addition, Christopher's river-crossing episode is most likely a retelling of the ancient Greek legend of Jason, who carried an old woman across a raging river, who was actually Hera, wife of Zeus and the goddess of woman and marriage. The story of St. Cuthbert is based on the life of an early Celtic Christian monk who, through his life and work, made famous the monasteries of Melrose and Lindisfarne in Northumbria in the Northeast of England. Famously Spartan and known for his generosity to the poor, he was accredited with the gift of healing and was known as the "Wonder Worker of Britain." He carried out missionary work all over Britain and Ireland, and founded an oratory at Dull, Scotland, which later became a monastery and then the University of St Andrews. Canonized after his death, he became the patron saint of northern England. Illustrated by Eleanor Fortescue-Brickdale.

Book excerpt: Set in the Middle Ages but written in the early twentieth century, E a de Queir s's novella, Saint Christopher, is a powerful indictment of those who profess the value of morality but who do not practice it. The narrative is just as relevant today -- when issues of religion, hypocrisy, and social justice are more urgent than ever -- as it was when it first appeared in 1912. Written as though it were the product of a dialogue between Jesus and Proudhon (whose theories animate much of the narrative), Saint Christopher challenges today's ethically motivated reader to do what the narrative's protagonist does, that is, take up the cause of the wretched and abused of this earth.

Book Cicely Saunders

Download or read book Cicely Saunders written by David Clark and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2018 with total page 353 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Born at the end of World War One into a prosperous London family, Cicely Saunders struggled at school before gaining entry to Oxford University to read Politics, Philosophy and Economics. As World War Two gained momentum, she quit academic study to train as a nurse, thereby igniting her lifelong interest in caring for others. Following a back injury, she became a medical social worker, and then in her late 30s, qualified as a physician. By now her focus was on a hugely neglected area of modern health services: the care of the dying. When she opened the world's first modern hospice in 1967 a quiet revolution got underway. Education, research, and clinical practice were combined in a model of 'total care' for terminally ill patients and their families that quickly had a massive impact. In Cicely Saunders: A Life and Legacy, David Clark draws on interviews, correspondence, and the publications of Cicely Saunders to tell the remarkable story of how she pursued her goals through the complexity of her personal life, the skepticism of others, and the pervasive influence of her religious faith. When she died in 2005, her legacy was firmly established in the growing field of hospice and palliative care, which had now gained global recognition.
