Book A Record of Spanish Painting Classic Reprint

Download or read book A Record of Spanish Painting Classic Reprint written by C. Gasquoine Hartley and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-16 with total page 494 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Record of Spanish Painting IN writing the history of Spanish painting, I have striven to recount the growth of the country's art from the stand point of historical evolution. It seemed to me that such a work was needed. The pictures of Spain are, in a very special degree, the outgrowth of the national life, and the distinctive character of the country's record has given them a specific interest. It is not over-stating the truth to say that Spain is the land where the seed was sown for the artistic harvest we are reaping to-day. It is these thoughts that have guided me while writing this record. I have not tried to give a chronological account of every Spanish painter. This work has already been achieved by Sir William stirling-maxwell in the Annals of the Artists of Spain. I have never hesitated to omit those painters whose work to me seemed insignificant and without meaning in the development of the art-life of the country. Book A Hand Book of the History of the Spanish and French Schools of Painting

Download or read book A Hand Book of the History of the Spanish and French Schools of Painting written by Edmund Head and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-26 with total page 420 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Hand-Book of the History of the Spanish and French Schools of Painting: Intended as a Sequel to "Kugler's Hand-Books of the Italian, German, and Dutch Schools of Painting" On this point I wish the reader to remember, that I have no acquaintance with the school of Valencia, except so far as its productions may be seen at Madrid. The schools of Madrid and Seville I have had opportunities of studying and appreciating. The notices of the school of Aragon, contained in the following pages, are taken from the l0th volume of Minai'io's Topographical Dictionary Of Spain, where they are printed from a ms. Of Cean Ber mudez. In their Spanish shape, therefore, they are not readily accessible to the English reader; and I believe I may say that, short as the account of Spanish painting given in this Hand-book is, it is the most complete which has appeared in England up to the present time. I am happy to hear that Mr. Stirling of Keir has completed a work of a far more elaborate character, which would make it im possible for me to assert the same thing if I were writing a few months hence. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Spanish Masters: An Outline of the History of Painting in Spain MY design in these chapters is but to give a rapid sketch of the great Spanish painters, and to express some of my love for the treasures of Spanish art; a love not begun, but deepened by the study of the galleries of Madrid. Spain is still a wonderland to the art student; a long era of religious oppression robbed it indeed of much wealth, yet it remains a land of romance and art. The enthusi astic studies of stirling-maxwell, Head, and Ford, have opened rich treasures to the eager student; but except their volumes (and they are all out of print), there is scarcely any thing on the subject in our English tongue. The student of Spanish art is forced to seek elsewhere his knowledge, and for a thorough study he must go back to Cean Bermudez's invaluable Dictionary of Spanish Painters, from which I have gleaned much information, and to the amusing pages of Palomino and Fonz. Yet these works must necessarily be within the reach of but few; and this fact will perhaps excuse my venturing to sketch the great masters of Spanish painting. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Stories of the Spanish Artists Until Goya And so, whether it be in Toledo or in Seville or in Estremadura or in Valencia, Spanish art, already a hundred years later in its development than the art of Italy, is just a religious hampered. By all the dogmatism of the Spanish ecclesiastic, oblivious not of life but of laughter, of the gaiety, for instance, which you may find implicit almost in Fra Angelico's work, really just a drudge of the Church that, so she said, set no store by things which rust and moth doth corrupt. Download or read book Hand Book of the History of the Spanish and French Schools of Painting written by Edmund Head and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-30 with total page 432 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Hand-Book of the History of the Spanish and French Schools of Painting: Intended as a Sequel to Kugler's Hand-Books of the Italian, German, and Dutch Schools of Painting" The reader is probably aware of the fact, that Engler's work is now in' the course of publication in Germany, in a form somewhat different from that which it originally bore. In the new edition, the history of painting will be treated as a whole - not in separate schools. Such a plan is far better, in some respects, than that originally adopted by the author; but, on the other hand, it is often less con venient to the traveller who visits a particular coun try for a short time only. Book The School of Madrid Classic Reprint

Download or read book The School of Madrid Classic Reprint written by A. De Beruete Y. Moret and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-10 with total page 396 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The School of Madrid Sefior de Beruete y Moret carries the history of Spanish painting since Velazquez down to the time of its decline under the alien influence of the Italian Luca di Giordano, content to leave it with a bare reminder of the later striking personality, Francisco Goya, who was again to raise it from a period of poverty to one of rare distinction. In this tale of Spanish painting we are introduced, besides, to one of the two forms in which, as the author says, Spanish national life finds most typical expression, and the one more readily com prehensible, in its universal medium, to the foreign student, since the other, which is drama, is veiled by difference of language. Thus this book, which coincides with the recent reawakening of interest in the art of the seventeenth century, is certain of cordial welcome, alike for the breadth and originality of the author's views and the profundity of his learning. Of the illustrations - many of them of works now made known for the first time - three call for special mention here. They reproduce celebrated paintings in English collections once unhesitatingly given to Velazquez, but claimed by Senor de Beruete y Moret. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Manual of Spanish Art and Literature This little manual grew out of a want felt by the writer in her experience as a teacher, - viz., that of light and interesting sketches of the famous men of art and letters whose genius has filled the civilized world with their immortal renown. The desire to supply in some measure this want has induced the preparation of this little volume; and Spain has been selected as the field for a first experiment, because no literature is more distinguished than is the elder Spanish for richness of invention, for beauty of style, for purity of moral tone, and for a lofty spirit of national pride and patriotic devotion. With its projected companions, the Manuals of Italy and Germany, it is intended to awaken in the young reader a taste for literature and art, the gratification of which will be a source of future enjoyment. This book was released on 2017-09-16 with total page 322 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Paintings of the Louvre, Italian and Spanish The visitor who passes from the lower to the upper galleries of the Louvre might, with reason, be tempted to ask himself where the art of the intervening thousand years was to be found, and, on realizing that his search would be in vain, he might speculate as to the cause or causes which had conspired to make this so. How and why, he might ask himself, did that perfect art of Greece and its humble Roman imitation find no followers? How and why did they so vanish that art had to be born again and reappear in the form of almost childish attempts at expression a thousand years later? Book Painters and Painting Classic Reprint

Download or read book Painters and Painting Classic Reprint written by Sir Frederick Wedmore and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-23 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Explore the history of art with this discussion of some of the world's greatest painters and their works. Wedmore's book opens with a brief introduction to painting, in which the author declares, "Of all pictorial Arts, major and minor... it is Painting that makes to the mass of us the easiest and most fascinating appeal." Wedmore holds painting alongside literature as a valuable record of the past, and believes the works of the world's great painters provides civilization with portals into specific periods of history. He does not hide his preferences, but rather embraces them as he takes the reader on a journey through time and place while discussing his most revered artists. Chapters are devoted to individuals such as Durer, Holbein, Hogarth, and Romney, as well as broader topics such as Spanish painters, later English art, French eighteenth-century art, and impressionism. A series of black and white reproductions serves as an appendix. Wedmore's book is one that will appeal to art historians or anybody that loves painting. It is a reference book, but one that does not pretend to be all encompassing. This is one man's guide (albeit one highly learned man) to his personal favorite artists, and does not attempt to be anything else. Wedmore does not apologize for leaving certain artists out of this book, and the reader ultimately benefits from the author's convictions. Painters and Painting is a wonderful book about a selection of the world's great artists and their paintings and fully deserves its place in anyone's library. This book was released on 2018-03-14 with total page 480 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Annals of the Artists of Spain, Vol. 3 of 4 Bartolomé Roman was born at Madrid in r 596. He studied painting first in the school of Vincencio Carducho, and afterwards in that of Velazquez. Few Castilian painters, says Cean Bermudez, equalled him in power of drawing, and in richness and har mony of colouring. But his success was by no means commensurate with his merits, and his works were not often to be met with. One of his most important pictures seems to have been a large composition in the sacristy of the church of the Incarnation, representing the marriage-feast, in the parable, whence a guest was ejected for appearing without a wedding garment.1 At Alcala de Henares the convent of San Diego had some pictures by him, amongst which was a St. Anthony that had been begun by Alonso Cano.
