Book A History of Orthopedics

Download or read book A History of Orthopedics written by and published by PublishAmerica. This book was released on 2011-06-16 with total page 94 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A History of Orthopedics portrays the beginning of orthopedic surgery from ancient times to the current era. It follows the gradual development of a specialty from Egypt to the European continent and England and from there to the United States of America. After the discovery of anesthesia and x‑rays in the 19th century, a more rapid development of surgical endeavors led to the current situation where arthroscopy could view and treat deranged joint mechanics, and painful arthritic joints could be replaced. Many of the important persons who helped reach this current state are listed with their contributions. Whereas in the 19th century orthopedic surgery was still considered part of general surgery, in the 20th century the two specialties became separated. In addition, there was a struggle between conservative practitioners (the AStrap and Buckle@ doctors) and those who felt surgical intervention provided better results.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Written by an author with plenty of experience holding a scalpel, Dr. David Schneider’s The Invention of Surgery is an in-depth biography of the practice that has leapt forward over the centuries from the dangerous guesswork of ancient Greek physicians through the world-changing developments of anesthesia and antiseptic operating rooms to the “implant revolution” of the twentieth century. The Invention of Surgery is history of surgery that explains this dramatic, world-changing progress and highlights the personalities of the discipline's most dynamic historical figures. It links together the lives of the pioneering scientists who first understood what causes disease and how surgery could powerfully intercede in people’s lives, and then shows how the rise of surgery intersected with many of the greatest medical breakthroughs of the last century. And as Schneider argues, surgery has not finished transforming; new technologies are constantly reinventing both the practice of surgery and the nature of the objects we are permanently implanting in our bodies. Schneider considers these latest developments, asking “What’s next?” and analyzing how our conception of surgery has changed alongside our evolving ideas of medicine, technology, and our bodies.

Book The Art and Practice of Children s Orthopaedics

Download or read book The Art and Practice of Children s Orthopaedics written by Dennis Ray Wenger and published by Lippincott Williams & Wilkins. This book was released on 1993 with total page 752 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This uniquely practical, readable, and well-illustrated book focuses on orthopaedic conditions commonly seen in children and offers the guidance most urgently needed in everyday practice. It presents a systematic approach to identifying and treating these problems during their early, most easily remediable stages. In keeping with the authors' belief that "the decision is more important than the incision," their emphasis is not on surgical technique but on the decision-making processes involved in determining the ideal course of therapy. Straightforward recommendations are offered on the optimal method and timing of surgery, if required, and on nonsurgical interventions such as casting, braces, and orthotics. The book contains nearly 1,500 illustrations, including many original drawings by Dr. Rang. To further enhance the text, marginalia present facts, quotations, and historical and biographical sketches that reveal the evolution and key concepts of children's orthopaedics.
