Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Story of Laura Secord: 1813 In the meantime the infant daughter was growing up, sharing hardships of which the present generation know nothing, laboring with her hands in concert with her mother and sisters for the comfort of the father and brothers whose lives had to be spent battling with nature, and in laying the foun dations, deep and wide, of that civil and religious liberty we now, perhaps too complacently, enjoy. In those days the means of education were small. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Laura Secord

Download or read book Laura Secord written by Peggy Dymond Leavey and published by Dundurn. This book was released on 2012-05-12 with total page 226 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 2013 Speaker’s Book Award — Shortlisted Laura Secord is now famous for her singular feat of bravery during the War of 1812, but did she warn the British and help defeat the American invaders as her legend says? After dragging her injured husband off the battlefield during the War of 1812, Laura Secord (1775-1868) was forced to house American soldiers for financial support while she nursed him back to health. It was during this time that she overheard the American plan to ambush British troops at Beaver Dams. Through an outstanding act of perseverance and courage in 1813, Laura walked an astonishing 30 kilometers from her home to a British outpost to warn Lieutenant James FitzGibbon. Despite facing rough terrain, the ever-present danger of being caught by American troops, and rather delicate encounters with Native forces, Laura reached FitzGibbon just in time for the British to prepare and execute an ambush on American military nearby, forcing the U.S. general to surrender. Laura lived a very long time, dying at the age of 93. In her lifetime the government never formally recognized her singular feat of bravery, and much controversy still envelopes her legacy.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Acts of Courage, Connie Brummel Crook dramatizes the life of one of Canada's most enduring heroines, Laura Secord. From young Laura Ingersoll's early days in Great Barrington, Massachusetts, amidst the turmoil that followed the American Revolutionary War, the story outlines her father's difficult decision to move his family to Upper Canada. Laura's subsequent meeting and courtship with James Secord is described against the backdrop of homesteading in the Niagara Peninsula and of enduring the imminent threat of American invasion. These first sections of the book provide the background for Laura's courageous rescue of her husband from the battlefield at Queenston Heights, and her even more amazing trek to warn Col. FitzGibbon of the American's secret plans to attack the British outpost at Beaver Dams. Laura's extraordinary life, peopled with characters like Joseph Brant and Col. Fitzgibbon, is given even more poignancy and interest by the author's inventive and surprising characterization of the young FitzGibbon, by her acute eye for historical detail, and through her insights into the character of a young woman whose acts of courage have captured the imagination of generations of young Canadians.

Book Laura Secord The Lost Canadian Heroine of the War of 1812

Download or read book Laura Secord The Lost Canadian Heroine of the War of 1812 written by Blake Sullivan and published by GRIN Verlag. This book was released on 2016-04-06 with total page 14 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Essay from the year 2015 in the subject Cultural Studies - Canada, grade: A, , course: HIE 203: Canadian History, language: English, abstract: The outcome of the War of 1812 had major implications in the development of not only the United States, but as well on Canada. On 24 June 1812, Great Britain discovered via a messenger that the United States was asserting its power and declaring war against Great Britain. Although greatly outnumbered, Britain’s small but well trained army, commanded by such senior officers as Isaac Brock and George Prevost, was able to fend off the Americans and win the war at the border. This victory was in large part the result of the supporting role played by the Natives and a former American woman whose allegiance to Britain was instrumental in the British maintaining their strategic position and stronghold in Canada. Specifically, Laura Secord, an American born loyalist whose family moved to Upper Canada, “lured by cheap land and low taxes”, dramatically changed the course of Canadian history by playing an essential part in the British Victory at Beaver Dams. Nonetheless, if history affectionately nicknames Secord “The Heroine of the War of 1812”, why did it take half a century to properly compensate and recognize Secord’s instrumental role in supporting the British during the War of 1812 at Beaver Dams? This paper argues that Laura Secord’s heroic actions in June 1813 played an extremely important role in the victory at the Battle of Beaver’s Dam, and her efforts made a significant contribution in shaping Canada’s future. More specifically, by analyzing Secord before, during and after her famous 32 kilometer walk from Queenston to Beaver Dams it is evident that Secord was a pivotal figure in securing the land that would have otherwise have been claimed by the Americans. Despite her vital role Secord was completely ignored by the British and her loyalist countrymen for almost half a century.

In 1813 American officers take over the Secord home, demanding food. Laura heard them boasting about a plan that would give them an easy victory over British Lieutenant FitzGibbon. It fell to gentle Laura to make the gruelling trip that would alert him of impending danger. Laura Secord is a feel-good tale of old that celebrates a young girl's bravery in the face of danger.
