A little volume, published at Philadelphia in 1844 under the title Ximena; or, The Battle of the Sierra Morena and Other Poems, brought its author a little cash; and indirectly it did him better service as the means of his introduction to The New York Tribune. With the money and an advance made to him on account of some journalistic work to be done in Europe, he set sail for the East. The graphic accounts which he sent from Europe to The New York Tribune, The Saturday Evening Post, and The United States Gazette were so highly appreciated that on Taylor's return to America he was advised to throw his articles into book form. In 1846 appeared his Views A-Foot; or, Europe Seen with Knapsack and Staff. In 1851, he travelled to Egypt and towards the end of 1852; he sailed for Calcutta, proceeding thence to China, where he joined the expedition of Commodore Perry to Japan. His works include: The Story of Kennett (1866) and Beauty and the Beast (1872).

Book The Story of Kennett Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Story of Kennett Classic Reprint written by Bayard Taylor and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-11 with total page 536 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Story of Kennett is a novel by American author Bayard Taylor. Taylor was a writer of both fiction and non-fiction, with a particular focus on travel writing. For this novel Taylor has taken his skills in travel writing and applied them to his own hometown of Chester County, Pennsylvania, which serves as the backdrop for this story. The Story of Kennett is exactly that - a novel about life in rural Pennsylvania in the 1900's. Taylor tells a fictionalized story that clearly draws its inspiration from real people and places. This is a book about country life and country drama and the characters that populate this world. The author gives us a front row seat at a Quaker meeting, details a barn raising, and invites us to both a country wedding and a funeral. A talented author, Taylor's writing places a great deal of emphasis on the environment, from the buildings to the animals to the countryside itself. In this way the essence the story also provides a scenic ride around the area in which the author grew up. Book excerpt: Meanwhile, the wonderful glamour of her presence--that irresistible influence which at once takes hold of body and spirit--had entered into every cell of his blood. Thought and memory were blurred into nothingness by this one overmastering sensation. Riding through the lonely woods, out of shade into yellow, level sunshine, in the odors of minty meadows and moist spices of the creekside, they twain seemed to him to be alone in the world. If they loved not each other, why should not the leaves shrivel and fall, the hills split asunder, and the sky rain death upon them? Here she moved at his side--he could stretch out his hand and touch her; his heart sprang towards her, his arms ached for very yearning to clasp her, --his double nature demanded her with the will and entreated for her with the affection.

Book excerpt: At noon, on the first Saturday of March, 1796, there was an unusual stir at the old Barton farm-house, just across the creek to the eastward, as you leave Kennett Square by the Philadelphia stage-road. Any gathering of the people at Barton's was a most rare occurrence; yet, on that day and at that hour, whoever stood upon the porch of the corner house, in the village, could see horsemen approaching by all the four roads which there met."

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The award-winning author of You Bring the Distant Near explores identity, homecoming, and the legacy of assault in this personal and ambitious new novel. Katina King is the reigning teen jujitsu champion of Northern California, but she’s having trouble fighting off the secrets in her past. Robin Thornton was adopted from an orphanage in India and is reluctant to take on his future. If he can’t find his roots, how can he possibly plan ahead? Robin and Kat meet in the most unlikely of places—a summer service trip to Kolkata to work with survivors of human trafficking. As bonds build between the travelmates, Robin and Kat discover that justice and healing are tangled, like the pain of their pasts and the hope for their futures. You can’t rewind life; sometimes you just have to push play. In turns heart wrenching, beautiful, and buoyant, Mitali Perkins's new novel focuses its lens on the ripple effects of violence—across borders and generations—and how small acts of heroism can break the cycle.

Book Dark History of Penn s Woods

Download or read book Dark History of Penn s Woods written by Jennifer L. Green and published by Brookline Books. This book was released on 2021-10-20 with total page 145 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Dark History of Penn’s Woods is the perfect book to keep you up all night... It’s ghostly, it’s ghastly, and we guarantee some of the included photos will stay with you!” — Philly Mag When ships under the command of white Europeans first sailed into the Delaware Bay in 1609, southeastern Pennsylvania's documented history of the strange and unusual began. This book tackles seven true "dark histories" from Chester and Delaware counties, which include tales of murder, witchcraft, cannibalism, tragic accidents and macabre events that actually happened in the Greater Philadelphia region. All stories are meticulously researched and placed within the greater context of Pennsylvania and world history. For example, the murder of three children by an indentured servant is placed within the context the kidnapping of children into servitude in England for sale to the Americas. The trial and execution of a woman for killing her infants is placed within the context of the rights of women in early America and how the court system failed them. The treatment of witchcraft is placed within the larger relationship of Quakers with the supernatural in Pennsylvania. This is not a book of ghost stories; this is an exploration of the real events that led people to believe in ghosts. It aims to strike a balance between a colloquial work that is accessible by a variety of readers, and an solid academic work.
