Book The Story of Japan Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Story of Japan Classic Reprint written by R. Van Bergen and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-02 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Story of Japan Our nearest neighbor across the Pacific has been reckoned among the foremost nations of the earth ever since, in the late war with China, she humiliated that vast but inert empire. Japan will have a voice in the future destiny of Asiatic countries, and in that of the islands of the Pacific. Our schoolbooks on geography and general history touch but lightly upon the Japanese Empire, and it is for the purpose of enabling children to obtain a correct idea of the people, and of the impulses leading to the rapid progress of the past quarter of a century, that "The Story of Japan" has been written. It was deemed essential to explain repeatedly the key to the history of Japan and to the reforms of our time, by noticing the overpowering influence of the samurai of old, who were and still are the makers of the nation. With a very few exceptions, the nobles of Japan have been wholly dependent upon their leading samurai, who, in turn, have been influenced by the ablest of their peers. Book excerpt: HISTORY and mythology, fact and fable, are closely interwoven in the texture of Japanese life and thought; indeed, it is within relatively recent years only that exact comparative criticism has been able, with some degree of accuracy, to divide the one from the other. The accounts of the God-period contained in the Kojiki and the Nihongi-"Records of Ancient Matters" compiled in the eighth century of the Christian era-profess to outline the events of the vast cycles of years from the time of Ame-no-mi-naka-nushi-no-kami's birth in the Plain of High Heaven, "when the earth, young and like unto floating oil, drifted about medusa-like," to the death of the Empress Suiko, A.D. 628.

And the faint echo which came back from the rocky hill-side bounding the Mission House garden on its eastern side answered, Eileen! Eileen! Over the hill-crest, on the steep sides of which, here and there, beeches, larches, pines, camphor trees, and maples grew, the last rays of the setting sun had streamed in a golden and crimson glory but a very short time before; for dusky twilight follows sunset very rapidly, and the stars in the Japanese sky creep out less stealthily than with us. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Introduction to the History of Japan Europeans and Americans, however, have failed as yet to appreciate the essential worth of Japan's civilisation. Some foreigners, it is true, speak highly of Japanese fine art, praising Japan as a country devoted to art; but the works that they admire are not always essentially character istic of Japan, nor are they representative works of Japanese fine arts. The number of foreigners aware of the existence of an influential literature in Japan is extremely limited. For a fuller understanding of the mys teries touched upon in this volume, the reader is referred to the works Of Lafcadio Hearn. His book, Japan, an Attempt at Interpretation, is the most complete and sympathetic study yet made of the spiritual side of the nation, and the chapter Kitsune, in volume one of his Glimpses of Unfamiliar Japan, relates in charming form the various phases of the fox belief. Book The Story of Old Japan Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Story of Old Japan Classic Reprint written by Joseph H. Longford and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-19 with total page 426 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Story of Old Japan The writer, in this book, has endeavoured to tell the Story of Japan from the creation to the accession of the present Emperor, when Old Japan - the Japan of feudal ism and seclusion - may be said to have come to an end and a new nation to have been born, which was destined to startle the world by a wondrous display of military, legislative and industrial progress. There are many Histories of Japan by English or American writers, and in the works of Kaempfer, translated from the German - Dickson, Adams, Griffis and Murray abundant material will be found by those who desire to form more than a general acquaintance with the subject. Those who desire to extend their inquiries still further, to acquire an esoteric knowledge of special periods, personages, or great political or economic movements, will find a storehouse closely packed with golden treasures of information in the Transactions of the Asiatic Society of Japan, every volume of which contains able monographs by scholarly experts who have investigated in Japan the varied subjects with which they deal. Above all, they will find the beliefs, held by the Japanese themselves, faithfully mirrored in the exact translations of native classics, which have been made by Satow, Aston, and Chamber lain, the three great English scholars, whose knowledge of the Japanese language and literature does not fall below that of the most accomplished Japanese literati. All these works, whether histories, monographs or trans lations, are for the serious student, rather than for the lay reader, who, without leisure for painstaking studies, may still desire to possess some knowledge of the inter esting mythology and history of a country that is now playing so great a part in the theatre of the world, that is bound to our own by close political and commercial ties. It has been the aim of the present writer to supply this deficiency and to provide a narrative, in logical sequence, of all the great periods in Japanese history, written in a style which will render its perusal no greater task than that of an ordinary novel, to tell, in fact, The Story of Japan throughout the long ages of the past, just as the novelist tells the story of his own heroes and their lives. An attempt has been already made to tell this story in an even more concise manner in a series of articles in the Nineteenth Century and After. It was the interest which, the writer found, was aroused by these articles among his own associates that tempted him to use the wealth of material that was at his disposal and his own knowledge to extend the articles into the present volume. It is very dificult to explain just how this book was written, but I must try to do something. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Japan, Vol. 1: Described and Illustrated by the Japanese There is no one who is better equipped to edit or to write a work of this sort than Captain F. Brinkley, of Tokyo, who has spent forty years of his life in the Orient, a great portion of that time as correspondent of the London great dailies and as editor of the Japan Mail. It gives me the greatest pleasure to recommend him to all serious students of Japanese history. It must be apparent to any one who is paying attention to the present history-making epoch in the Orient that in the future the diplomatic as well as the business connections between Japan and America will be of far greater importance than they have ever been. It is difficult enough for two nations who speak the same language to thoroughly understand each other. It is far more difficult for two nations who speak different lan guages, whose traditions are unlike and whose nearest neighbours are frequently at variance with their respective policies.
