Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With historical sketches of some 165 churches that were known to exist in Hawai‘i during the nineteenth century, Nā Hale Pule: Portraits of Native Hawaiian Churches, 1820–1900 is the first comprehensive survey of the Congregational and Presbyterian Churches of Hawai‘i as established by the American Board of Commissioners for Foreign Missions and later operated by Ka ‘Ahahui ‘Euanelio o Hawai‘i (The Hawaiian Evangelical Association). While many of these churches were first led by missionary pastors, the ali‘i (hereditary chiefs) founders of the churches together with their membership and congregational leaders were predominately Native Hawaiian. Worship services were soon led by Native Hawaiian pastors and were conducted in ‘ōlelo Hawai‘i (Hawaiian language). This study draws upon the official archives of the churches, English-language newspaper articles, missionary and pastoral correspondence, and a twentieth-century architectural survey. The body of this work includes an island-by-island listing of the names and locations of the Native Hawaiian churches, the pastors who served the congregations, and brief histories of the churches themselves. These portraits tell the stories of the founding of the churches, Christianity’s rise in the islands through the Great Revival years of the 1840s, the devastating impact of foreign diseases that swept through Hawai‘i during the mid-nineteenth century, and the efforts of the churches to maintain their properties and congregations. The book's introduction describes the founding of mother and branch churches, the importance of the lands on which the churches resided, church construction and builders, the struggle for self-support and self-governance, demographic changes that led to the churches’ decline, and a resurgence of Native Hawaiian culture and polytheism that caused understandings of faith and the future to further evolve. Also included are a chronology of Native Hawaiian churches, a robust glossary of Hawaiian theological vocabulary, and meticulous citations. This volume is a companion to Nā Kahu: Portraits of Native Hawaiian Pastors at Home and Abroad, 1820–1900, by Nancy J. Morris and Robert Benedetto, which tells the stories of the lives of Native Hawaiian pastors.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Paniolo House Stories Volume 1 includes interviews with Yoshio Hara, Eva Kealamakia, Elizabeth Kimura, Hisa Kimura, Mary Bell Lindsey, Katy Lowrey. Volume 2 includes interviews with Dan Miranda, Bea Nobriga, Blanche Rapoza, Grace Shigematsu, Ichiro Yamaguchi, and Shigeko Yoshikami. The purpose of the Paniolo House Stories project is to guide the restoration of a hundred-year-old paniolo (cowboy) family home, as a living museum of daily life, health and healing practices before World War Two in the ranching town of Waimea on the island of Hawai`i. The Paniolo House is to be a museum which perpetuates the local history of families and life in this special town of Waimea. Friends of the Future’s Paniolo House Committee works in partnership with the North Hawaii Community Hospital, where the house is located. In this way, the North Hawaii Community Hospital honors its historical community roots and keeps community values central to its continuing success. In order to gather the stories on which to base the interpretive exhibits at the Paniolo House, the Paniolo House Committee initiated a project to collect oral history interviews with twelve kupuna, or elders, from the Waimea community. These interviewees kindly shared their stories for the project. The Paniolo House Committee continues to guide the renovation and interpretation of the Paniolo House as a living history museum to help connect the eldest and the youngest generations in the Waimea community. The Paniolo House Committee has been blessed by the dedicated work of Wally and Marge Bright, Balbi Brooks, Jean and Gilbert Davis, Barbara and Nelson Elliott, Gordon Hills, Hisa and Elizabeth Kimura, John and Katy Lowrey, Maile Melrose, Bea Nobriga, Nancy Piianaia, Phyllis Richards and Quentin Tomich. The Committee was founded in 1995 in conjunction with the North Hawaii Community Hospital, with Susan Pueschel helping at the start. Assisting the Paniolo House Committee is Susan Maddox of Friends of the Future with David Tarnas as project manager and Tom Quinlan as the architect specializing in restoring historic buildings. Four members of the Committee who generously assisted the Paniolo House project, but who have passed away in recent years, are Nelson Elliott, Gordon Hills, Hisa Kimura, and John Lowrey. Nancy Piianaia was the Humanities Scholar for Paniolo House Stories and main interviewer with the assistance of Maile Melrose. Megan Mitchell transcribed the interviews. Nancy Piianaia was chief editor with the assistance of Alexander Tarnas and David Tarnas.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Jonathan Osorio investigates the effects of Western law on the national identity of Native Hawaiians in this impressive political history of the Kingdom of Hawaii from the onset of constitutional government in 1840 to the Bayonet Constitution of 1887, which effectively placed political power in the kingdom in the hands of white businessmen. Making extensive use of legislative texts, contemporary newspapers, and important works by Hawaiian historians and others, Osorio plots the course of events that transformed Hawaii from a traditional subsistence economy to a modern nation, taking into account the many individuals nearly forgotten by history who wrestled with each new political and social change. A final poignant chapter links past events with the struggle for Hawaiian sovereignty today.
