Book excerpt: Excerpt from Perrin's History of Illinois This is an attempt to present the outline of Illinois history in such a form as to furnish a system, which will secure to the student a convenient index for the further ance of his studies and will enable the historian to avail himself of the groundwork upon which he may build. Quite a number of voluminous historical works, contain ing data concerning the various events which have trans pired in this state, have been issued and these may be con sulted for detailed information. This work aims simply at a brief arrangement, in systematic and chronological form, of leading events, in order to furnish a convenient indicator for those who are desirous of being assisted in pursuing their investigations systematically. The task of writing a full and detailed account of the happenings, which have occurred upon the soil of Illinois within the last two hundred and thirty-two years, will be left to more ambitious historical compilers and commentators. The ambition of the author of this work will be realized and gratified if he may succeed in infusing a spirit of re search into others'by indicating to them'the' importance of the history of our state through this brief recital. Hence, it has been deemed adequate to the scope of this work to give solely that important chain of incidents, which in itself is sufficient to enlist the attention of those Who are interested in the history of a people who have. This book was released on 2017-01-23 with total page 502 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of Illinois and Her People, Vol. 2 of 6 The people of the new state gave considerable attention to military matters. This gave those who had had some experience in war a chance to take command of units of the militia and assume the high sounding titles that go along with military organization. Muster days were marked events in the calendar of the year. The new state had started well under Governor Bond. The first session of the Legislature had been diligent in enacting such laws as their needs seemed to require. Courts had been organized, county officers appointed, and the machinery of civil government was fairly well adjusted. The governor was able to report a healthy financial condition of the state's new treasury department. At the meeting of the second Legislature, which convened in December, 1820, and held over into the year 1821, there were quite a few laws passed and some subjects considered which were taken up at later sessions. This book was released on 2016-12-10 with total page 48 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of the Illinois State Museum of Natural History The work of bringing the following material together has not been done in the spirit of idle inquiry into things of small moment but for the purpose of learning of events which have had valuable results. There is a dearth of records concerning the Museum. For long periods of years no catalogues were made. The catalogues that were begun within the last thirty years have not been made complete: But few curator's reports have ever been published. The facts presented have been found in the State Laws, Geo logical Survey Reports, in two Curator's Reports, in letters and from conversation with people acquainted with the institution. If the history of a dozen or more like institutions in the country were written there would doubtless be presented facts which would be of valuable service to those institutions and render them more capable of efficiently carrying out the purpose of their foundation. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Government of the People of the State of Illinois IT has seemed to the author that the wisdom Of the fathers, in separating the functions Of government into three departments, and entrusting them to different groups of persons was not sufficiently appreciated. The changes which are suggested by the discontented Of today would practically destroy this safeguard Of our liberties. If this little volume shall assist in impressing upon the youth Of our State, not only the excellence Of the dis tinction between the Legislative, Executive and Judicial powers, but also the fact that safety lies in keeping them distinct, the Object Of the writer will be attained. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lake Forest, Illinois: History and Reminiscences, 1861-1961 The present becomes the past before we know it. The past he comes history. It is important to write down the facts in some read able form before people pass on, and before many documents and newspapers, yellow with age and ready to fall apart, are gone for ever and forgotten. The written records of a period are far more trustworthy than the memory of people years after the event. In view of these circumstances, it is important to preserve all that is available about our fair city, in answer to the simple question what happened? But the answers are not always simple. One is often faced with conflicting reports, and a choice has to be made. Many of the records are not readable; some are undated and often interesting but unusable. It is fortunate that there are a few persons still living who remember the pioneers of Lake Forest, what they were like, what their ideas were, and how they lived. I have told every one everywhere what I was doing and received much information, some of which could not be used. Being a community of varying ideas, the balance or the omissions of this book are natural subjects of disagreements. Also with so many capable writers in our midst many types of treatment are possible. For the readers who disagree with the materials in this book or wish to add to them, blank sheets are provided at the end of the volume for private corrections or additions.
