Book excerpt: Excerpt from Henry M. Stanley: His Life, Travels and Explorations The great anglo-saxon and English-speaking nations of the old and new worlds have no continuous and convenient record of the travels and explorations of Mr. Henry Morton Stanley. This book it is hoped will supply the need. The narrative is mainly based upon the graphic ao counts, from the pen of the famous traveller himself, of his journeys and explorations, and upon copies of official despatches, reports, and original papers which have been placed at my disposal. The helpful lessons of a career so strong in purpose, so direct in aim, and so prolific of results, are too valuable to be overlooked or lost. Stanley The good folk of Denbigh, in North Wales, proudly claim their town to be the birthplace of the great explorer, Sir H. M. Stanley. Close by the ruin of its old Castle, they point out the little Welsh cottage where his life began; and thus they tell the story of his childhood before he left his country and changed his name. He was born in 1841, and baptized in Tremeirchon Church as John Rowlands, which is the English way of writing the Welsh name Rollant. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Stanley's Adventures in the Wilds of Africa: A Full Account of the Two Famous Expeditions of Henry M. Stanley, the Fearless and Peerless Explorer of the Dark Continent For centuries Africa has been the dark continent of our globe. The sea-washed edges of this immense tract have been known time immemorial. Egypt, at its northeastern corner, is the Oldest of the governments of the earth; while the nations skirting the Red and the Mediterranean seas were actors in the earliest recorded history. But Africa as a whole has been an unknown land. That it was a fertile land, was demonstrated by the treasures brought from its depths by those mighty rivers, the Nile, the Niger and the Congo. That it was populous, was proven by the fact that its native tribes had furnished to the world with out, forty millions of slaves in the period of two centuries. Both the Slave-hunter and the slave told wondrous tales of the inner depths of the land, but these were mere hints as to the actual facts of the case. Africa remained a mystery and a riddle, that seemingly were never to be penetrated. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Stanley and Africa Classic Reprint

Download or read book Stanley and Africa Classic Reprint written by Eva Hope and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-09-17 with total page 700 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Stanley and Africa The great missionary himself has given us a very remarkable instance of the power of the Scriptures over the heathen mind - an instance which forms quite a romantic episode. In one of my early journeys, he says, with some of my companions, we came to a heathen village on the banks of the Orange River, between Namaqua Land and the Griqua country. \ye had travelled far, and were hungry, thirsty, and fatigued. From the fear of being exposed to lions, we preferred remaining at the village to proceeding during the night. The people at the village rather roughly directed us to halt at a distance. W'c asked water, but they would not supply it. I offered the three or four buttons which still remained on my jacket for a little milk this also was refused. We had the prospect of another hungry night, at a distance from water, though within sight of the river. \ve found it difficult to recon cile ourselves to our lot; for, in addition to repeated rebuffs, the manners of the villagers excited our suspicion. \vhen twilight drew on, a woman approached from the heights beyond which the village lay. She bore on her head a bundle of wood, and had a vessel of milk in her hand. The latter, without Openingher lips, she handed to us, laid down the wood, and returned to the village. A second time she approached, with a cooking vessel on her head, and a leg of mutton in one hand, and water in the other. She sat down without saying a. Word, prepared the fire, and put on the meat. \ve asked her again and again who she was. She remained silent till affectionately entreated to give us a reason for such unlooked-for kindness to strangers. The solitary tear stole down her sable check when she replied, 'i love llim whose servants you are; and surely it is my duty to give you a cup of cold water in His name my heart is full, therefore I cannot speak the joy I feel to see you in this out-of-thc-way place.' She was a lonely disciple indeed, and her only means of keeping the spiritual life awake within her was a copy of the Dutch New Testament, which she had got years before, when in a missionary school, previous to removing with her relatives far up the country. Download or read book My Life With Stanley s Rear Guard Classic Reprint written by Herbert Ward and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2019-01-04 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from My Life With Stanley's Rear Guard IN July last Mr. Stanley wrote to me privately, sug gesting that I should write a little volume giving the story Of my life with his Rear Guard. He further suggested that in this little book, I should deal with the different matters in dispute between us. The pro posal at the time had no charm for me. I wished to avoid controversy altogether, and to be allowed to for get, as far as possible, all about my connection with the Emin Expedition. The Bear Guard was a failure; something could undoubtedly be said On all sides Of the question, and it seemed to me that under all the circumstances, the subject had far better be left alone. This was my view Of the matter, and this my reason for holding aloof from the controversy, as long as I could. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from With Stanley's Rear Column On my return from Africa in September 1888, my health being very much broken by what I had so recently gone through in the service of Mr. Stanley, I was much pained by reading most inaccurate accounts of what had taken place at Yambuya, and I was even more troubled to find the Emin Pasha Relief - Committee with my report in their possession - failed to correct the false statements made in the press, though I wrote requesting them to do me and my comrades this act of justice, because we were forbidden by our contracts to publish anything. Failing to obtain from them any satisfaction, I felt that to defend the honour of myself and comrades became my duty, especially when our action was condemned in a letter of Mr. Stanley's published April 1889. I knew of the paragraph in the contract by which I had agreed not to publish anything for six months after the appearance of the official publication of our leader, but I believed this was binding only on condition that he had fulfilled his part of the contract, and this he had failed to do, as he never supplied me with the tent, bed, Winchester rifle, canteen, and a due share of European provisions. Download or read book Stanley s Emin Pasha Expedition Classic Reprint written by A. J. Wauters and published by . This book was released on 2015-08-05 with total page 234 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Stanley's Emin Pasha Expedition In February 1883 Dr. Junker had penetrated so far into the heart of Africa that he found himself at the zeriba Ali Kobo, on the banks of the Welle Makowa, in a region hitherto traversed by no other European. For three years this indefatigable traveller had been exploring north and south, east and west, the districts watered by the Welle, in the hope of finding a definite solution to the important geographical problem propounded by his friend Dr. Schweinfurth, thirteen years previously, as to whether the Welle was connected with the Shary and thence with Lake Tehad, or whether it flowed into the Congo. It needed only a few more weeks of perseverance and progress towards the west, and the explorer would have attained his end and reaped the reward of his labors. He was within a few days' march of the Congo and was about to push onwards, when letters from Lupton Bey brought news of startling import and put an end to further investigations. Dr. Junker had for a considerable time been quite aware how the country around Khartoum was harassed by the revolutionary action of an agitator who professed himself to be the "Mahdi," that is, a deliverer invested with a supernatural mission. He had been apprised that the powerful tribe of the Dinka had taken arms, and was threatening the military settlements and zeribas on the Bahr-el-Ghazal; and had further learnt from Lupton Bey, who was the representative of the Egyptian government in that province, that the route between the Niam-niam country and the landing-place of Rek on the Bahr-el-Ghazal was completely blockaded, while the Mahdists were at the same time making an alarming progress.
