Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Life of Goethe When we come to know the real facts, we see that the Auto biography does not so much misstate as understate we, who can read between the lines, perceive that it errs more from want of sharpness of relief and precision of detail than from positive misrepresentation. Controlled by contemporary evi dence, it furnishes one great source for the story of the early years; and I greatly regret there is not more contemporary evidence to furnish more details. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Johann Wolfgang Goethe His short biography of Goethe is intended to deal rather with the author's life than with his works. As, however, the works of Goethe are perhaps more intimately bound up with his life than is the case with any other of the world's greatest writers, being, as he himself declared, fragments of a great confession, his writings, and especially the more directly auto biographical among them, form one of our chief sources of information concerning his life, and of elucidation of the motives that govern it. The length of the different sections is not regulated by the number of years comprised, but is deter mined rather by the degree of external movement and interest of the several periods. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Life of Johann Wolfgang Goethe When Goethe was in his sixth year, his grandmother died and soon afterwards his father carried out a plan he had long cherished, that Of rebuilding the house to suit the wants Of his family. The work was carefully superintended by the elder Goethe himself, and the house was transformed to a handsome, convenient dwelling, with well-lighted rooms tastefully decorated. He had an excellent collection Of books, and they were now properly arranged in his study. His pictures, most Of which were by Frankfort artists, were also brought together in a room fitted up for their reception, and the walls of the passages were adorned with maps and engravings. He had brought back with him from Italy many fine speci mens of Venetian glass, bronzes, ancient weapons, and other artistic objects. In the new house these treasures were put in cabinets, and no pains were spared to secure that they should be effectively displayed. A room on the top floor, looking out upon the street, was set apart for Goethe. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Life of Goethe Classic Reprint

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Life of Goethe Goethe, who desire precision and fulness of detail, who want a book to refer to and find in. No student of Goethe, writes Professor Dowden,1 can afford to neglect Diintzer; no fair-minded person can view the book with any feelings but those of respect and gratitude. Here is a map provided with the aid of which we can go over the ground for ourselves and possess a sense of security - a map which enables us at any point of the perplexing expedition to find our bearings, if we only have a little patience, and to ascertain precisely what lies before us and what be hind. In other words, Professor Duntzer has written for those who mean to take Goethe gravely, and in their judgment he will find his reward. And perhaps many not disposed to take Goethe gravely hitherto, will find their hearts changed towards him when they read how well he lived - not the life of a god in Olympus, as is often absurdly said, but the common place life of daily duty, - how good he was to his friends, how diligent in a round of tiresome labours alien to his nature, how compassionate to the suffering and the poor, how free from bitterness towards the foes without, how implacable towards the baffling foes within. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Goethe: His Life and Writings This account of Goethe's life and writings is reprinted, with alterations and additions, from an article contributed to the last edition of the "Encyclopaedia Britannica." It is possible that the discoveries of the last ten years may not have been completely represented in this revision; but it is difficult to alter much in what has been carefully conceived and planned without injuriously affecting the harmony and balance of the whole, and the desirability of preserving this has been constantly before the writer's mind. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Goethe: The Man and His Character Goethe still treads the stage of the world in the character of Faust, but the true story of his life is far more attractive than the melodramatic mutila tion of his great tragedy which is annually presented in the theatres of every land. We have from his own hand a minute and masterly description of the boyhood of a genius; we behold, in his narrative and his impulsive letters, the exquisitely sensitive youth awakening in a world which is a hundred years too old for him, and, while conscious of a mighty task, wavering time after time between the valleys of love and the hills of learning; we find his developed nature so many-sided that he attracts into his life nearly every person of consequence in his age, and reflects in his art every spasm of its travail for the birth of the new world; and even in his later years we see his genius linked, in rare association, with a passion that holds him to the common rank of men. The greatest literary artist since Shakespeare, and no inconspicuous figure in the scientific culture of the new world, he is, never theless, so profoundly human that almost every chapter in his career is a romantic love-story. Book Life of Goethe Vol 2 Classic Reprint

Download or read book Life of Goethe Vol 2 Classic Reprint written by P. Hume Brown and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-26 with total page 430 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Life of Goethe, Vol. 2 Though on his return to Weimar Goethe had been relieved of the burden of his official duties, his attachment to the Court still involved a sacrifice of time which he would have preferred to give to the special pursuits in which he was interested. During the years 1790-3 he spent more than a year away from Weimar and in conditions which were not always congenial, although they brought their own profit to himself and to the world. As we have noted, he did not find himself happy in Weimar during the period immediately following his return. His breach with Frau von Stein and the general lack of sympathy from former friends had resulted in his complete isolation from Weimar society. "For Weimar," wrote Frau Herder to her husband, "Goethe is no longer of any use." It was doubtless out of a desire for temporary escape from a painful situation that in the autumn of 1789 he contemplated a second journey to Italy where he had found refuge from his previous unhappiness. The prospect of Christiane's confinement probably prevented his carrying out his intention, but in the spring of the following year an opportunity came and he decided to avail himself of it. Book Life of Goethe Vol 1 Classic Reprint

Download or read book Life of Goethe Vol 1 Classic Reprint written by Peter Hume Brown and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-20 with total page 424 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Life of Goethe, Vol. 1 Professor Hume Brown died in the winter of 1918. He had nearly completed his Life of Goethe. The earlier part, The Youth of Goethe, had already been published in 1913. The larger part, however, to which I have given the title The Later Years of Goethe, existed only in manuscript. But it was ready to be revised for the press, with the exception of Chapter XXIII., in which the author intended to deal with the Second Part of Faust. Professor Hume Brown died before he could touch this, and all that he left of material consisted of a few notes. I have ventured, however, to write and insert this Chapter as it now appears. I felt justified in doing so, even though I could not be sure that he might not have expressed what it contains in a somewhat different fashion. For he and I had talked over the poem during many years, and we had, both of us, studied it fairly closely. It was our practice to go to Germany annually to collect materials for a life of Goethe, and this we had done in each year from 1898 to 1912 inclusive. We spent our time mainly in Weimar, Ilmenau, Jena, Wetzlar and Gottingen, and we had accumulated a good deal of material. Book Goethe s Life Poem

Download or read book Goethe s Life Poem written by Denton J. Snider and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-13 with total page 606 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Goethe's Life-Poem: As Set Forth in His Life and Works Thus the poet speaks of his new birth as he views himself rounding the chief turn or node of his total evolution. Many other declarations made in his later days could be gathered, showing the sovereign importance with which he regarded his Italian Journey. The significance of these statements of his for us is that he emphatically periodized his own life in order to measure it aright and thus to comprehend it fully. The Pre-Italian time was to his mind one great Period which he had gone through and brought to a definite close by his sudden flight to Italy. What he did for himself with such persistance, we still propose to do for him in this account of his career. In fact the biographer of Goethe can easily obtain full instructions from Goethe himself for meting and hounding the great arcs of his life's cycle which we call Periods. His own stages and their landing-places he well recognized, for he was verily the careful self-scrutinizer in reviewing his own life-work. Really, he was the most self-examining of poets in spite of many a fling at thinking about thought, which he sometimes deemed his disease. Book The Life of Goethe Vol 3

Download or read book The Life of Goethe Vol 3 written by Albert Bielschowsky and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-07 with total page 452 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Life of Goethe, Vol. 3: 1815-1832, From the Congress of Vienna to the Poet's Death In the preface to the first volume I promised to insert here a statement of what was added to Bielschowsky's unfinished manuscript to make his biography of Goethe complete. Long before it became probable that he might not be spared to complete his great task he had cherished the wish that a special discussion of Goethe as a scientist might be contributed by some one especially well versed in that phase of the poet's activity. This wish is fulfilled in the chapter entitled "The Naturalist" (iii., 81-134), which was written by Professor S. Kalischer of Berlin. Professor Max Friedlander of Berlin added the note bearing the heading "Goethe's Poems Set to Music" (pp. 374-376). The most extensive additions were made by Professor Theobald Ziegler of Strasburg, who finished the chapter on Faust (beginning in the middle of p. 271) and wrote the concluding chapter (pp. 359-369), beside inserting an account of Goethe's attitude toward romanticism (pp. 143-149), and his relation to the philosophers Fichte, Schelling, and Hegel (ii., 179-181). The notes signed "Z" are also by him. Professors Imelmann and Roethe of Berlin revised Bielschowsky's manuscript from the point of view of style, and Dr. Franz Leppmann of Berlin lent the German publisher other assistance in bringing out the finished work. In the preparation of the index of the translation it has seemed best to work independently of that of the original. I have included among the topics the various subjects in which Goethe was interested and the first line of each passage of German verse cited in the text, except extracts from a work under consideration. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Auto-Biography of Goethe: Truth and Poetry, From My Own Life; Thirteen Books If the revised translation is compared with that on which it is based, it will be found that scarcely a sentence has been left unchanged. Book Life of Goethe Vol 1 of 3 Classic Reprint

Download or read book Life of Goethe Vol 1 of 3 Classic Reprint written by Albert Bielschowsky and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-21 with total page 474 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Life of Goethe, Vol. 1 of 3 There may have been others of clearer understanding, of greater energy, of deeper feelings, or of more vivid imagination, but it is quite certain that there never was an individual in whom all these faculties were united in such striking proportions. And, moreover, there has rarely been an individual of such highly developed powers of soul, whose physical life has so fully retained its independence and has so thoroughly permeated the spiritual. This wonder fully perfect amalgamation of Goethe's nature elevates it to the rank of the extraordinary, and, at the same time, accounts for its seemingly contradictory manifestations. But it is this seeming contradictoriness 1 that has made it so difficult for most people to obtain a correct and adequate idea of him. He observes colour refractions like a physicist, examines bones and ligaments like an anatomist, and comments on bankrupt law like a jurist. Gifted with unusual clearness in the comprehension and analysis of men and things, his early appearance on the stage of action is marked by the wisdom and experience of a man of the world and a diplomat. And yet this same man writes poetry overflowing with imagination, goes about in the real world absorbed in dreams, sees many things and many people, not as they are, but in the light of his own fancy, is frequently incapable of making out a clear, understanding of objects and their mutual relations, and stands in the midst, of human activi ties a naive and often helpless child. This man at one time grasps the world in the warm embrace of a Faust and again he spurns it with the annihilating contempt of a Mephistopheles.
