Book excerpt: Excerpt from Capture of Fort Fisher, North Carolina: Jan; 15, 1865 This is not true, as the official reports show, in any other sense than that Curtis's brigade first reached the fort under my immediate orders with Terry half a mile away. An earlier attempt to make public these facts has been impracticable, as the volume of the war records covering this event was not published till 1894. Book The Capture of Fort Fisher

Download or read book The Capture of Fort Fisher written by Alfred H. Terry and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-11 with total page 28 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Capture of Fort Fisher: And What It Accomplished While we would forget the animosities and the bitterness aroused by the Civil War, we should never forget those brave men whose valor and sacrifices brought us safely out of that fierce conflict. And it seems eminently fit that a great achievement, by a distinguished soldier, whose home was in New Haven, should receive full recognition in the records of the New Haven Colony Historical Society. It was forty-six years on the 15th of last January since Fort Fisher was captured. Some of us remember the exultant thrill we felt when the telegraph flashed the message to his fellow townsmen, "General Terry has taken Fort Fisher," but to the majority of the people in this community that event is now only history. And it is not only our duty but a pleasure from time to time to recall the great deeds of such men, and of those who served under them, that the coming generations may learn to remember and honor them so long as the country which they preserved shall endure. It is not the object of this paper to give an account of the long and arduous service of General Terry throughout the Civil War and during the reconstruction of the revolted states as military governor of Virginia and also of Georgia, where he was sent to deal with a difficult and critical situation, nor of his later career, during which by his ability and scholarly attainments he rose to the highest place in the esteem of his brother officers. Nor would the prescribed limits of this paper permit it. It is only intended to describe clearly and concisely a great military operation, remarkable for the perfection of its plans in every detail and the celerity and completeness of its success and also to point out some of the important results that were secured by it. This book was released on 2018-01-20 with total page 32 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Last of the Blockade and the Fall of Fort Fisher As an acting ensign on that vessel I began my experiences inactive service in the war for the suppression of the rebellion. The need for supplies for the Confederate armies in the Carolinas and Virginia, and the great profit in cotton from the Southern States had brought forward from England a large number of daring spirits, who, for the great gain of the ventures and the excitement attending the traffic, were willing to dare the risks of blockade running; and month by month their numbers increased. Charleston and Wilmington were the principal objective points for such ventures, and as the numbers of the successful trips increased the Federal Government taxed every resource to multiply the number of vessels in front of those seaports, and off the many inlets along the Atlantic coast. This book was released on 2018-03-21 with total page 60 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Capture of Fort Fisher, North Carolina, January 15, 1865 These Official reports Show, as Terry says, that I com mended all the troops engaged from the first act, 'when my aide, Capt. A. G. Lawrence, led the first brigade into the fort, to the last act, when the garrison surrendered to my aide, Capt. H. C. Lockwood. The sailors and marines who assaulted in column the northeast angle of the fort along the sea beach were a body of 2000 men, made up of detachments from different ships. Naturally enough, Captain Breese found it, as has been stated, an unwieldy mass. The 1600 sailors were armed only with pistols and cutlasses. They were quickly repulsed. Few reached the parapet. Once checked, they turned and fled, losing 300 in killed and wounded. Admiral Porter testified: I suppose the whole thing was over in fifteen minutes, as 'far as the sailors were concerned, for they Were cut down like sheep. Book The Expeditions Against Fort Fisher and Wilmington Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Expeditions Against Fort Fisher and Wilmington Classic Reprint written by Edson J. Harkness and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-07-21 with total page 52 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Expeditions Against Fort Fisher and Wilmington An occurrence after the fall of Fort Fisher illustrates the difficulty of blockading. Two English boats arrived at night. Their commanders, unaware of the situation, worked their way through all our fleet and came into the river unobserved. They then announced, by signals, their arrival. A captured contraband understood the signals, and informed General Terry what reply would bring them in. The signal was given, and the officers came in, entirely unconscious they were falling among Federal forces. Even after they entered the fort, they enjoyed conversation for some time before suspecting that Union generals were their hosts. They were finally informed that their vessels and cargoes were prizes. Whoever held the shore north of New Inlet kept the key of this contraband mart. For more than twenty miles above its mouth, Cape Fear River flows nearly parallel with the coast, forming a peninsula twenty-three miles long, but of varying width. Its southeast end is Federal Point, the peninsula one mile northward being a mere beach, less than half a mile from sea to river, and entirely open to bombardment. Three miles northward the breadth is one mile, and the east bank is six feet high. At the fourth mile the width becomes one and a half miles. At the north end the peninsula is cleft by Mason boro Sound, extending sixteen miles south. The area between New Inlet, the river, the sound, and the Atlantic, is sandy; the ground never rises more than fifteen feet above high water, is heavily timbered in dry regions, and abounds in wooded and almost impassable swamps. The148 military essays and recollections. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Thirty Years at Sea: The Story of a Sailor's Life Nearly all the incidents and scenes depicted in this book have been derived from the-writer's own experience or from the relations of actors and eye witnesses. Nothing in it is matter of pure invention except as to arrangement and the connecting links necessary to preserve the continuity of the narrative, fragments of which have given entertainment to so many listeners, old and young, as to encourage the hope that in a connected form it might interest a wider circle. The chapters describing the fight be tween the Monitor and the Merrimac, and the capture of Fort Fisher, have, in a slightly altered form, already appeared in Lippincott's Magazine, where they were divested of their connection with the hero of the narrative, and became a strictly accurate account of facts which came under the writer's observation.
