Download or read book The British Trade Book Classic Reprint written by John Holt Schooling and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-11 with total page 620 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The British Trade Book The conclusion to be drawn from J evons' facts would seem a pretty Obvious one had it not taken so long to be realised. It is that no argument can stand which does not take account of the cycle of trade. NO comparison of isolated years, no comparison of short consecutive periods can be relied upon to give properly comparable data. And if averages are to be used at all, the least that must be demanded are decennial averages. By averaging each year with at least nine others, allowance will be made for the usual number of fat and lean seasons; and by a series of decennial averages taken annually, it will be possible to indicate with accuracy the general trend of phenomena as distinguished from the oscillations of particular years. Book The Industrial History of England Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Industrial History of England Classic Reprint written by H. De B. Gibbins and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-09-17 with total page 284 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Industrial History of England In the Preface to the Fifth Edition he wrote It has been said that I write with a prejudice against the owners of land: but this is not the case. The landed gentry of England happen for some centuries to have held the pre dominant power in the State and in society, and used it, not unnaturally, in many cases to further their own interests. It is the duty of an historian to point this out, but it need not therefore be thought that he had any special bias against the class. Any other class would certainly have done the same, as, for instance, mill owners did among their own employees at the beginning of this century, and as, in all probability, the working classes will do when a further extension of democratic government shall have given them the opportunity. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The History of British Commerce, Vol. 3 of 3: From the Earliest Times Our modern system both of manufactures and trade, in most of its leading branches, may be regarded as taking its rise from the commencing portion of the reign of George III. Indeed, in our national history, generally, in our litical as well as in our social system, what pre cedes t at reign is, for the most part, for us of the present hour a yesterday which has run its course. Yet, in the progress of our industry as well as of our politics, the quarter of a century we are about to review was but the dawn of the busy day in the full light of which we now live and move. This book was released on 2017-10-17 with total page 80 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from British Trade and the Zollverein Issue I take the materials in alphabetical order, drawing the figures from the invaluable Annual Statement of the Trade of the United Kingdom with Foreign Countries and British Possessions, for 1901, compiled by the Custom House.* I give these figures in detail because the average reader, although well acquainted with the sources of supplies of the raw material of the trade in which he is particularly interested, may not be an fait with the recondite details of the many and diverse industries which employ the skill of our people. It is idle to discuss a Zollverein or preferential tariffs without knowledge of these practical details, which are, as a rule, carefully avoided by the spinners of fine theories of Imperial trade. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Empire Review and Journal of British Trade, 1920, Vol. 34 We should also like to see the provisions against dumping in operation in Canada and other of our overseas Dominions substituted for those in the Bill. The collection Of differences between Foreign Value and Import Price, and Foreign Value and Price on First Sale, must entail confusion and delay, and it would Simplify things to apply to dumped goods generally a tarifi scale calculated on such a basis as would cover all possible cases of dumping. Again, the best criterion for deciding whether dumping is taking place ortnot, is the actual price at which the goods are being 'sold in the country of origin. Then the list of key industries in Part 3 can scarcely fail to occasion dissatisfaction. Many budding and promising industries, which do not appear in the list, are certain to be subjected to the fiercest competition, and every Opportunity ought to be given manu facturers to prove that their industries come within the scope Of the Bill. Lastly, the feeling of the business community is anta 4gonistic to trade by licence; of this method Of carrying on commercial transactions it had long and bitter experience during the war. Still with all its drawbacks the Bill has an excellent foundation, and if the objectors are many there is no doubt that with careful revision it can be made a workable and beneficial measure. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Silver Question: Injury to British Trade and Manufactures Fifteen years ago I had come to the conclusion that if the value of gold, as measured by silver and commodities, were to continue to rise, the inevitable consequence must be the banishment of all our great manufacturing industries from England, to find a home in the silver-using countries of the East and elsewhere. This theory I and others proclaimed from the housetops, but we found that we might as well have been crying in the wilderness; no one would listen to us. Yet the theory is very simple, and seemed to us quite conclusive. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Golden Fleece

Download or read book Golden Fleece written by G. W. Morris and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-30 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Golden Fleece: An Introduction to the Industrial History of England Most of the great industries of England have their own literature but it has generally been written from the technical point of View. Few of these industrial studies are suitable for the ordinary reader or are written with reference to the general economic history of the country. This book aims at giving to those who are interested in England's industrial development, as well as to those who are engaged in the woollen industry, some idea of the great part wool has played in England's history. It stands midway between the technical books on the subject and the general industrial histories of England. To suggest ideas and to trace tendencies has been held more important than mere erudition. Each trade is a great romance, the story of the hopes, the fears, and the achievements of men for many generations, and there lingers about it the same fascination as haunts some great monument of the past - making us feel our kinship with the men who have gone before us.
