Download or read book Not Quite the Classics written by Colin Mochrie and published by Diversion Publishing Corp.. This book was released on 2013-07-12 with total page 218 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The improv star of Whose Line Is It Anyway? puts his “unique comic vision” to work on a range of literary classics (Toronto Star). Based on the improv game First Line, Last Line, actor and comedian Colin Mochrie puts his own spin on works of classic literature. Taking the first line and last line from classic books and poems, Colin recasts these familiar stories in his own trademark offbeat style. Join in the fun as a rainy day at home becomes a zombie-killing adventure in The Cat and My Dad . . . as well as riffs on everything from A Tale of Two Cities to a classic Sherlock Holmes novel, proving that no literary masterpiece is too big, or too small, for the improvisational comedy treatment. “Colin Mochrie is a comedic and creative force to be reckoned with. Therefore, this book is a literary force to be reckoned with. If you are too lazy for reckoning, just read this book and everything will work out nicely.” —Brad Sherwood “Colin Mochrie is devastatingly handsome, perilously smart, and smells like warm maple syrup. Step inside his hilarious and complex mind, and abandon all hope.” —Aisha Tyler

Download or read book Battleship SMS Baden written by Luke Millis and published by Kagero. This book was released on 2017-03-19 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The second and last to be completed of a class of 4 "super dreadnoughts", SMS Baden represented the culmination of German battleship development during the First World War. Completed too late to take part in the Battle of Jutland, the ship was commissioned as Fleet Flagship on 14th March 1917 and took part in the majority of fleet actions, but was destined to never fire her guns in battle. As a condition of the Armistice, the main body of the German fleet was interred in Scapa Flow. Originally Baden was not included in the list, but as the battlecruiser Mackensen was as yet incomplete, Baden was sent in her place on 7th January 1919. Under the orders of Vice Admiral Reuter, Baden was scuttled with the rest of the fleet on 21st June 1919, however due to the quick action of the of the Royal Navy officers, the ship was beached and salvaged. Following thorough examination, the last German dreadnought was finally expended as a gunnery target off Portsmouth in August 1921.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: You will be the first to grant me, honoured sir, that after earnestness of purpose, that is to say "keenness," there is no quality of the mind so essential to the even-balance as humour. The schoolmaster without this humanising virtue never yet won your love and admiration, and to miss your affection and loyalty is to lose one of life's chiefest delights. You are as quick to detect the humbug who hides his mediocrity behind an affectation of dignity as was dear old Yorick, of whom you will read when you have got to know the sweetness of Catullus. This Yorick it was who declared that the Frenchman's epigram describing gravity as "a mysterious carriage of the body to cover the defects of the mind," deserved "to be wrote in letters of gold"; and I make no doubt that had there been a greater recognition of the extreme value and importance of humour in the early ages of the world, our history books would record fewer blunders on the part of kings, counsellors, and princes, and the great churches would not have alienated the sympathy of so many goodly people at the most important moment in their existence-the beginning of their proselytism.

Visit us online at www.1stWorldLibrary.ORG - - On the southern edge of the populous parish of Paddington, in a parallelogram bounded by Oxford and Cambridge Terrace on the south, Praed Street on the north, and by Edgware Road on the east and Spring Street on the west, lies an assemblage of mean streets, the drab dulness of which forms a remarkable contrast to the pretentious architectural grandeurs of Sussex Square and Lancaster Gate, close by. In these streets the observant will always find all those evidences of depressing semi-poverty which are more evident in London than in any other English city. The houses look as if laughter was never heard within them. Where the window blinds are not torn, they are dirty; the folk who come out of the doors wear anxious and depressed faces. Such shops as are there are mainly kept for the sale of food of poor quality: the taverns at the corners are destitute of attraction or pretension. Whoever wanders into these streets finds their sordid shabbiness communicating itself: he escapes, cast down, wondering who the folk are who live in those grey, lifeless cages; what they do, what they think; how life strikes them. Even the very sparrows which fight in the gutters for garbage are less lively than London sparrows usually are; as for the children who sit about the doorsteps, they look as if the grass, the trees, the flowers, and the sunlight of the adjacent Kensington Gardens were as far away as the Desert of Gobi. Within this slice of the town, indeed, life is lived, as it were, in a stagnant backwash, which nothing and nobody can stir.

Book excerpt: "A complicated tale of murder, hidden identities, and buried secrets in London's fashionable neighborhood of Bayswater. Bayswater is a quiet neighborhood whose residents are successful lawyers or medical men, people of independent means, or wealthy colonials returned to their homeland. It is hardly the place to expect a brutal murder and robbery, yet that is exactly what Richard Viner finds himself caught up in when he discovers the body of a neighbor on his nightly stroll, after having spent an evening reading a detective story to his aunt. He protests to his aunt that the events in detective stories never occur in real life. She counters with several mysteries from her own experience. He is still doubtful, but finds she is right when he finds himself in... The Middle of Things."
