I did so for two reasons: First, my inability and inexperience as a writer; second, the pain which the effort would cost me. But, finally, the honored and lamented Dr. Robert Richardson, of West Virginia, who was long a co-laborer of the illustrious Alexander Campbell, and who knew me well, convinced-me that it was my duty to write. With many tears, I have sacrificed my feelings at the shrine of duty. I claim for my narrative no literary merit, but I have tried to make it as accurate in statement as it is sincere in design.
