Book The Story of a Red Cross Unit in Serbia Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Story of a Red Cross Unit in Serbia Classic Reprint written by James Berry and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-11 with total page 348 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Story of a Red Cross Unit in Serbia This book has been written at the request of many friends who wished to have some permanent record of the work done by our Mission, the "Anglo-Serbian Hospital," or the "Royal Free Hospital" Unit as it is also called, during our year in Serbia. It may also be of some interest to the general public as a plain story of one of the many subsidiary enterprises undertaken by the British peoples during the Great War. We hope that the details of the sanitary precautions adopted to prevent the occurrence and spread of typhus and other diseases may perhaps be of use to others who may be called upon in the future to set up hospitals under similar conditions in foreign countries. Our intimate association in war time both with the Serbs and with our Austro-Hungarian enemies gave us an insight into the character of both these nations which was of extreme interest to ourselves and which we have endeavoured to portray in the following pages. Indeed the whole of our year's stay in Serbia was a strange mixture of tragedy, comedy and pathos. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Download or read book A 10s Over Kosovo written by Phil M. Haun and published by www.Militarybookshop.CompanyUK. This book was released on 2011 with total page 368 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 2003. The NATO-led Operation Allied Force was fought in 1999 to stop Serb atrocities against ethnic Albanians in Kosovo. This war, as noted by the distinguished military historian John Keegan, "marked a real turning point . . . and proved that a war can be won by airpower alone." Colonels Haave and Haun have organized firsthand accounts of some of the people who provided that airpower-the members of the 40th Expeditionary Operations Group. Their descriptions-a new wingman's first combat sortie, a support officer's view of a fighter squadron relocation during combat, and a Sandy's leadership in finding and rescuing a downed F-117 pilot-provide the reader with a legitimate insight into an air war at the tactical level and the airpower that helped convince the Serbian president, Slobodan Milosevic, to capitulate.

Book War Is a Force that Gives Us Meaning

Download or read book War Is a Force that Gives Us Meaning written by Chris Hedges and published by PublicAffairs. This book was released on 2014-04-08 with total page 156 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: General George S. Patton famously said, "Compared to war all other forms of human endeavor shrink to insignificance. God, I do love it so!" Though Patton was a notoriously single-minded general, it is nonetheless a sad fact that war gives meaning to many lives, a fact with which we have become familiar now that America is once again engaged in a military conflict. War is an enticing elixir. It gives us purpose, resolve, a cause. It allows us to be noble. Chris Hedges of The New York Times has seen war up close -- in the Balkans, the Middle East, and Central America -- and he has been troubled by what he has seen: friends, enemies, colleagues, and strangers intoxicated and even addicted to war's heady brew. In War Is a Force That Gives Us Meaning, he tackles the ugly truths about humanity's love affair with war, offering a sophisticated, nuanced, intelligent meditation on the subject that is also gritty, powerful, and unforgettable.

Book The International Committee of the Red Cross

Download or read book The International Committee of the Red Cross written by David P. Forsythe and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2007-05-07 with total page 129 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) has a complex position in international relations, being the guardian of international humanitarian law but often acting discretely to advance human dignity. Treated by most governments as if it were an inter-governmental organization, the ICRC is a non-governmental organization, all-Swiss at the top, and it is given rights and duties in the 1949 Geneva Conventions for Victims of War. Written by two formidable experts in the field, this book analyzes international humanitarian action as practiced by the International Red Cross, explaining its history and structure as well as examining contemporary field experience and broad diplomatic initiatives related to its principal tasks. Such tasks include: ensuring that detention conditions are humane for those imprisoned by reason of political conflict or war providing material and moral relief in conflict promoting development of the humanitarian part of the laws of war improving the unity and effectiveness of the movement.

Book Born to Rebel

Download or read book Born to Rebel written by Mary Allsebrook and published by Oxbow Books Limited. This book was released on 2002 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Harriet Boyd was the first woman to lead an archaeological excavation in the Aegean. At a time when few women traveled on their own, she discovered, excavated and published an account of the Minoan town of Gournia in Crete. She was the first woman to lecture to the Archaeological Instituite of America - ten times in fourteen days in January 1902. While prominent as a lecturer and teacher, archaeology was only a part of her life: in 1897 she was nursing with the Red Cross in the Greco-Turkish war, in 1915 she was nursing Serbian typhoid victims on Corfu, and by 1917 she was in Northern France setting up a rehabilitation center within sound of the front. While the past and its arts were her profession, the present and the future were her passionate interest - whether local social problems in her home town of Boston or international affairs which took her to lunch with Mrs Roosevelt at the White House. Mary Allsebrook's lighthearted and extremely readable account of her mother's extraordinary experiences shows Harriet Boyd to be truly one of America's pioneers.
