As, in the morning, the Convention began listlessly and wearily to do the formal and necessary things before its final adjournment, a telegram was received announcing the surrender of General Lee on the preceding day to General Grant at Appomattox. The effect was electric. In a flash all dulness and languor fled. For the nonce all differences of opinion vanished. All hearts were surcharged with patriotic emotion. The die was cast. The integrity of the Union was assured. From all parts of the hall came shouts of joy; delegates and spectators vied with each other in expressions of gladness. They clapped, stamped and cried, "The Union forever!" Mr. Drake, the leader of the Convention, finally got the ear of the rejoicing patriots and gravely moved that they give cheers three times three "for the glorious news just now received." They were given with full lung power. Those nine hurrahs brought the members of the Convention to quietude once more, and they proceeded by resolution to thank "Almighty God for the success of our noble and patriotic army and navy; for the steady and persistent perseverance of our noble President in the work of breaking the power of the rebellion; and especially for the noble and humane disposition which has been manifested by our authorities to our conquered enemy." But they also declared, that they were not ready "to sanction any terms of peace which will admit of the perpetuation of slavery in any part of the Republic." AFTER General Lyon's army was withdrawn from Springfield and Southwest Missouri, General Price saw that if the State became one of the Confederate States, the Confederate forces should at once commence aggressive operations, and, if possible, unfurl their victorious banners in the heart of the State. He saw, too, that his army would increase in numbers from active operations, and decrease from inactivity. He proposed to march to the Missouri River and establish himself, and then to invade and lay waste Kansas, and invited General McCulloch to join him in the enterprise, with his division of Texas, Louisiana, and Arkansas troops. The Texas General, however, declined to move his troops any farther north. In the first place, he had little faith in the ultimate success of the expedition, and, in the next place, his ruffled pride had not been sufficiently appeased to co-operate with the Missouri General in a hearty spirit. He knew, too, that the terms of service of the most of the Arkansas troops would expire in a few weeks, and that unless they re-enlisted, the strength of his division would be materially decreased. General Price was inclined to be conciliatory, for the sake of advancing the Confederate cause in the State; but it was all to no purpose, General McCulloch was immovable. Finding that General McCulloch would not join forces with him, General Price determined to accomplish such results as were possible with his own army, --the State Guard. He left Springfield about two weeks after the battle of Wilson Creek with some ten thousand men, with the intention of taking Fort Scott, Kansas, and then marching through Kansas to the Missouri River, striking it at Kansas City. Not the least valuable are chapters on the American Indians' part in the conflict. The record becomes devastatingly clear: the fighting in the West was the cruelest and most useless of the whole affair, and if men of vision had been in Washington in the 1850s it might have been avoided.

This book corrects that oversight, explaining how many border state residents used wartime realities to redefine their politics and culture as "Southern." By studying the characteristics of those positioned along this fault line during the Civil War, the centrality of the war issue of slavery, which border residents long eschewed as being divisive, became apparent. This book explains how the process of Southernization occurred during and after the Civil War—a phenomenon largely unexplained by historians. Beyond the broader, more traditional narrative of the clash of arms, within these border slave states raged an inner civil war that shaped the military and political outcomes of the war as well as these states' cultural landscapes. Author Christopher Phillips describes how the Civil War experience in the border states served to form new loyalties and communities of identity that both deeply divided these states and distorted the meaning of the war for postwar generations.
