Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Storm Birds "Proceed Venice immediately report commanding officer Louisville." The young man in the first-class compartment of the afternoon train from Udine had already committed the words to memory; their first perusal had fixed them indelibly in his mind. But he spread out the slip of paper on which they had been hurriedly scrawled and examined it with an intensity of interest which would have betrayed at once to any onlooker that the message held some hidden meaning which he was striving in vain to penetrate. There were no curious eyes to observe him, however. He was the only passenger in the only firstclass compartment in the train, one of those delightfully inconsequential, dawdling affairs which, in this country, would be labeled "accommodation," or "mixed freight," in the schedules of the railroad, and which, in Europe, not being rated officially as "express," never ruffle the serenity of their slumbrous dignity by moving faster than an excited small dog can run. The solitary first-class passenger was not disturbed, however, by the speed, - or lack of it, - of this train. Book Storks Ibises and Spoonbills of the World

Download or read book Storks Ibises and Spoonbills of the World written by James Hancock and published by A&C Black. This book was released on 2010-09-30 with total page 392 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Some of the world's largest and most spectacular birds are to be found among this group of wading birds. Tragically, they also include many of the world's most endangered species, as changes in land use erode their wetland habitats. Some like the White Stork have lived alongside humans for hundreds of years and are well known from numerous studies. Others, like the Storm's stork and ibises of West Africa, South-East Asia and South America live so secluded a life in the remote corners of the globe that they will probably be extinct before even the most basic details of their biology are known. In this monograph, three authors and two artists have combined their skills to capture what is known of this group of wading birds. The text opens with general chapters on taxonomy and feeding, breeding and behavior, followed by detailed coverage of each species. Book Hill Birds of Scotland Classic Reprint

Download or read book Hill Birds of Scotland Classic Reprint written by Seton Gordon and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-13 with total page 360 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Hill Birds of Scotland IT must ever be the case that those birds living their quiet lives on the remote and inaccessible hillsides take from their surroundings a certain charm and distinction. It is this charm which renders the studying of these mountain dwellers a pursuit of exceptional interest. Many difficulties are set in the way: the hills do not yield the store of their knowledge easily it is only to him who knows them in storm as in fine weather, and in the dead of winter as well as during long days of June sun light, that they give a measure of their wisdom. The difficulty of investigating bird life on the highest hills is largely due to the absence of any suitable base in their vicinity; thus I would strongly advise any ornithologist who decides on studying the habits of hill birds to procure a good strong tent, which at the same time is not too heavy to be carried to the high corries. At elevations of between three and four thousand feet the main inconvenience to the camper is the low tempera tures which are experienced after sunset, and a plentiful supply of rugs are a necessity if a night's rest is sought for. During the months of June and July brilliant weather frequently prevails on the high tops, and even at mid night the afterglow in the north is sufficiently strong to render impossible the changing of photographic plates unless the operator first covers himself with rugs. These days of early summer, spent at the homes of the Snow Bunting and the Ptarmigan, are retained in the mind's eye for long. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Shadow of the Sheltering Pines: A New Romance of the Storm Country Another winter had lifted its icy fingers from the Storm Country and Lake Cayuga, and an early spring had brought from the south the redbreasted robins and thousands of other birds to build their homes in the Forest City, as Ithaca, New York, is called. No wonder the name had been given to the quiet town of people, for to the south, the east, the west, and even to the north where the lake cut sharply around a corner, broad forests stretched their lengths and heights of leaf and bough on miniature mountains. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Flight of Birds, Vol. 6 Of the long list of works that issued from his pen two only have carried his fame through the following centuries to modern times' Theorice Medicaaarum Planetarum, published at Florence, and the better known posthumous De Motu Animalium. The former deals with the movement of Jupiter's satellites, and exhibits an instinctive knowledge of gravitation without actually expressing it - a common characteris tic of scientists of that day who were wiser than they knew The publication of De Motu Animalium, the year after his death, put Borelli at once at the head of the Iatromathematical School, who sought to apply mathematics to the mechanics of living bodies. It raised a vast storm of discussion among the learned throughout Europe, a ferment that clarified into admiration. Download or read book Harbinger of the Storm written by Aliette de Bodard and published by Jabberwocky Literary Agency, Inc.. This book was released on 2016-01-05 with total page 384 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The second book in the critically acclaimed Obsidian and Blood trilogy: The year is Two House, and the Emperor of the Mexica has just died. The protections he afforded the Empire are crumbling, and the way lies wide open to the flesh-eating star-demons--and to the return of their creator, a malevolent goddess only held in check by the War God's power. The council should convene to choose a new Emperor, but they are too busy plotting against each other. And then someone starts summoning star-demons within the palace, to kill councilmen... Acatl, High Priest of the Dead, must find the culprit before everything is torn apart. REVIEWS: ‘Political intrigue and rivalry among a complex pantheon of divinities drive this well-paced murder mystery set at the height of the Aztec Empire in the late 15th century. De Bodard reintroduces the series hero Acatl, high priest of the dead, immediately following the death of the Tenochtitlan leader. One of the council members in charge of choosing a successor has been brutally murdered in what looks like an attempt to influence the decision. But the deaths continue and the political situation grows more complex, while the empire looks to be increasingly at risk of invasion by malignant powers. Acatl must go face-to-face with the most powerful god in his world and put the good of the empire above his antipathy for is rivals to achieve the uneasy succession. De Bodard incorporates historical fact with great ease and manages the rare feat of explaining complex culture and political system without lecturing or boring the reader.’ —Publishers Weekly ‘Another thing that intrigues me here is the whole fact that historically we know that the real empire died out mysteriously and completely and as such there is always that thought in the back of my mind that the author could choose to bring about the end of days. That highlighted sense of possible doom is something that is missing from too many novels. The way the story is told in this book is very impressive, the plot is both mature and seductive, twisting and turning like a weather vane in a force 9 gale while the action is both bloodthirsty and imaginative. The world building is fantastic and we get to learn even more of this rich culture and the many gods and creatures of the dark. I really can’t fault this book at all and recommend it to one and all but if you haven’t yet read Servant of the Underworld I suggest that you get them both and read them in order, you won’t be disappointed.’ —SF Book Reviews ‘Bodard’s writing is polished and striking, as she convincingly fills in the colorful elements of the Aztec culture–even if those colors tend to be of blood and bile as well as flowers and hummingbirds... beautiful, grimy, breathtaking, and morbid. 5*’ —Examiner ‘Aliette de Bodard has done it again. Harbinger of the Storm is an action packed Aztec mystery opera with magic, interventions from the gods and more twists and turns than the first book. It even has a love story with amusing snippets here and there... The story is self contained and can be enjoyed standalone, but you will not want to miss out on the first. I wish it was 2012 already even if the world is going under while I read the final Obsidian & Blood.’ —Cybermage
