Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Stories Editors Buy and Why During the past twenty years the short story has come to occupy a distinct place in American letters. While it must perhaps be granted that we are not pre-eminent in the novel or the essay, we may quite fairly pride ourselves upon the high achievement of our authors in short story writing. American magazines (and this is said in no spirit of braggadocio) today carry more and better short stories than do the magazines of any other country. In addition it should be taken into consideration that we in America publish a greater number of periodicals devoted either wholly or in part to fiction than is the custom elsewhere. Thus automatically the would-be short story writer is given opportunity and encouragement, two powerful factors in all creative endeavor. Success in short story writing means both fame and pecuniary reward. It is professionally worth while both from the artistic and the financial points of view. To the American editor should be given much of the credit for this development in the short story. A story, no matter how vital or well written, carries no real weight until it is in print. The printed page gives it permanency; through print it reaches the multitude. The editor, at his or her desk, has final say as to what shall or shall not go into the pages of his or her magazine. There are often outside factors that shape the magazines editorial and fiction policy. But editors are sincere in desiring to give their readers the best stories they can procure of the kind they are ready to publish. But they do a great deal more than just select from the mass of material that is submitted to them. They go out after the type of stories they want. Book Story Sensei Self Editing Worksheet

Download or read book Story Sensei Self Editing Worksheet written by Camy Tang and published by Camy Tang. This book was released on 2024-03-23 with total page 149 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: You've finished your novel! How do you make sure you have a good character arc, strong story structure, good pacing? How can you smooth over rough writing patches, eliminate episodic writing, or increase emotional intensity? My Self-Editing worksheet combines a variety of techniques that I have taught in online workshops into one place, with tips to help you refine and polish your manuscript. By the end of the worksheet you'll have: 1) A good large-scale view of your story structure and character arc, and knowledge about how to fix any problems in that area 2) Tips for how to revise more emotion into your writing 3) Tools for solving pacing issues 4) A deeper look at technical writing errors to look for in your writing 5) An understanding of your own strengths and weaknesses in terms of critiquing yourself This 69-page worksheet consists of lessons, homework, and fun exercises for you to apply various types of self-editing on your manuscript. You’ll learn lots of simple techniques to help you revise and tighten your manuscript to be the best it can be. Note: I made this worksheet originally for a class I was asked to teach. This is essentially the shortened versions of both my Deep Point of View worksheet and my Characterization worksheet. This contains about 60% of what’s in my Deep POV worksheet, and about 70% of what’s in my Characterization worksheet. Both of those worksheets go into more depth about Deep POV and Characterization, so if they both interest you, you’ll get more information and instruction if you buy those two separately. However, if you want more bang for your buck, this worksheet is like the abridged versions of those two worksheets combined into one worksheet. Just be aware that this will contain much of the same stuff rather than being all-new material.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: WHAT IS THE STORY GRID? The Story Grid is a tool developed by editor Shawn Coyne to analyze stories and provide helpful editorial comments. It's like a CT Scan that takes a photo of the global story and tells the editor or writer what is working, what is not, and what must be done to make what works better and fix what's not. The Story Grid breaks down the component parts of stories to identify the problems. And finding the problems in a story is almost as difficult as the writing of the story itself (maybe even more difficult). The Story Grid is a tool with many applications: 1. It will tell a writer if a Story ?works? or ?doesn't work. 2. It pinpoints story problems but does not emotionally abuse the writer, revealing exactly where a Story (not the person creating the Story'the Story) has failed. 3. It will tell the writer the specific work necessary to fix that Story's problems. 4. It is a tool to re-envision and resuscitate a seemingly irredeemable pile of paper stuck in an attic drawer. 5. It is a tool that can inspire an original creation.

Book My Vocation Story Editor s Cut

Download or read book My Vocation Story Editor s Cut written by Benjamin J. Hadrich and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2014-04-13 with total page 152 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book outlines my vocation as a priest. In it I focus on several important chapters of both my life and discernment on the path to ordination. Since each of us are created by God and called to some mission for His glory, we all have a story to tell. Writing this book has allowed me to reflect on my story and share it with you. In reading this I hope you see that God uses regular people to carry out His work here on earth. I am not a mystic, saint (yet!) or particularly holy (yet!) but have discovered the greatest gift of my life in the form of the priesthood. I pray this encourages you in wherever God may be calling and hope you find God's will for your life. Only then may we fulfill the words of St. Augustine, ""Our hearts are restless until they rest in thee."" God Bless!

Book Editing and Publishing e Books

Download or read book Editing and Publishing e Books written by Nicolae Sfetcu and published by Nicolae Sfetcu. This book was released on 2015-01-01 with total page 64 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: You wrote a book. Very nice. But you didn't write to keep it for you. You should publish it. The problem is that the publishers charge high prices for some authors pockets, and do it objectively, due to the high cost of printing. But you allowed that luxury, and now you have a printed book, with you as the author. You can keep hundreds or thousands of volumes in your personal library and give it as a gift to your friends in special occasions, or try to distribute in various libraries. You managed to distribute it, the book is beautifully placed in shelves. In time, dust is spread on covers. After a while, the book is withdrawn. It remains to use it as decoration at home, or support for various household items. But lucky for you, there is an alternative, cheaper and more effective, in selling your book: e-Books! e-Book and online publishing market has evolved rapidly in recent years, and a lot of companies have entered this market, as publishers, online bookstores, or promoting e-books.

Book H Beam Piper

Download or read book H Beam Piper written by John F. Carr and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2014-02-11 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: H. Beam Piper is one of science fiction's most enigmatic writers. In 1946 Piper appeared seemingly from out of nowhere, already at the top of his form. He published a number of memorable short stories in the premier science fiction magazine of the time, Astounding Science Fiction, under legendary editor John W. Campbell. Piper quickly became friends with many of the top writers of the day, including Lester Del Rey, Fletcher Pratt, Robert Heinlein and L. Sprague de Camp. Piper also successfully made the turn from promising short story writer to major novelist, authoring Four-Day Planet, Cosmic Computer, Lord Kalvan of Otherwhen and Little Fuzzy, which was nominated for a Hugo award. Even those who counted Piper among their friends knew very little about the man or his life as a railroad yard bull in Altoona, Pennsylvania. This biography illuminates H. Beam Piper, both the writer and the man, and answers lingering questions about his death. Appendices include a number of Piper's personal papers, a complete bibliography of Piper's works, and an essay on Piper's Terro-Human Future History series.
