Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book takes one step further the long-standing debate among scholars of religious antiquity over when and why a parting of the ways happened between Judaism and Christianity in the early centuries of the Common Era. It explores three interrelated questions: what might have happened to prevent that split; how might Western religion have looked had the split not occurred; and how might features of that religion, which never existed, nonetheless manifest in some of the literature and artworks of the past half millennium. The book envisions a religion that stands between historical Judaism and Christianity—a counterfactual construction that challenges Jews and Christians to rethink their actual identities today.

Book Making Poems

Download or read book Making Poems written by Todd F. Davis and published by State University of New York Press. This book was released on 2010-02-02 with total page 227 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This diverse collection of poems and companion essays by forty nationally and internationally known poets allows readers to experience the creative process through the eyes and voice of each poet. No matter how often we are told that revision is an essential component of poetic composition, it can be difficult to resist the temptation to think of the poem as having sprung spontaneously, Athena-like, from the writer's head. By exposing readers to the finished product as well as the poet's own account of the poem's creation, Making Poems offers a behind-the-scenes perspective on the poetic process that will fascinate both beginning and established writers. The book also affords poetry instructors an opportunity to demonstrate to their students the ways in which poems can originate from seemingly mundane and unlikely sources.

She presents different approaches and practical advice for dealing with the difficult life transition that occurs when parents become ill. Book Reading the Runes in Old English and Old Norse Poetry

Download or read book Reading the Runes in Old English and Old Norse Poetry written by Thomas Birkett and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-03-27 with total page 225 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Reading the Runes in Old English and Old Norse Poetry is the first book-length study to compare responses to runic heritage in the literature of Anglo-Saxon England and medieval Iceland. The Anglo-Saxon runic script had already become the preserve of antiquarians at the time the majority of Old English poetry was written down, and the Icelanders recording the mythology associated with the script were at some remove from the centres of runic practice in medieval Scandinavia. Both literary cultures thus inherited knowledge of the runic system and the traditions associated with it, but viewed this literate past from the vantage point of a developed manuscript culture. There has, as yet, been no comprehensive study of poetic responses to this scriptural heritage, which include episodes in such canonical texts as Beowulf, the Old English riddles and the poems of the Poetic Edda. By analysing the inflection of the script through shared literary traditions, this study enhances our understanding of the burgeoning of literary self-awareness in early medieval vernacular poetry and the construction of cultural memory, and furthers our understanding of the relationship between Anglo-Saxon and Norse textual cultures. The introduction sets out in detail the rationale for examining runes in poetry as a literary motif and surveys the relevant critical debates. The body of the volume is comprised of five linked case studies of runes in poetry, viewing these representations through the paradigm of scriptural reconstruction and the validation of contemporary literary, historical and religious sensibilities.

Book An Iranian in Nineteenth Century Europe

Download or read book An Iranian in Nineteenth Century Europe written by Muḥammad ʻAlī Sayyāḥ and published by Ibex Publishers, Inc.. This book was released on 1999 with total page 381 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: After finishing his religious education and returning to his hometown of Muhjirn Haj Sayyah realises that his family has plans for him to marry his cousin. Partly wanderlust, and partly to escape this, he sets off for what would be an eighteen year trip through Europe, America and the Orient. Haj Sayyah's diaries are unique. He travels through practically every country in Europe, where he gives detailed reports. Later, in separate trips he also visits America and the Far East. He was astonished to see how much the European countries had progressed and concluded that education, to which European nations paid so much attention, was the basis for their advancement. In spite of his religious training, Sayyh had a positive attitude towards modern European customs. He mingled with people from all social classes and developed a fair understanding of their ideas; he saw that they were free to openly criticise their governments and religious authorities. He visited museums, schools, libraries, churches, factories, parks, zoological and botanical gardens, even prisons, and met some of the famous personalities of the time such as King George of Greece, Czar Alexander II of Russia, and King Leopold I.

Book The Princeton Handbook of Multicultural Poetries

Download or read book The Princeton Handbook of Multicultural Poetries written by Terry V.F. Brogan and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2021-04-13 with total page 388 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Drawn from the acclaimed New Princeton Encyclopedia of Poetry and Poetics, the articles in this concise new reference book provide a complete survey of the poetic history and practice in every major national literature or cultural tradition in the world. As with the parent volume, which has sold over 10,000 copies since it was first published in 1993, the intended audience is general readers, journalists, students, teachers, and researchers. The editor's principle of selection was balance, and his goal was to embrace in a structured and reasoned way the diversity of poetry as it is known across the globe today. In compiling material on 106 cultures in 92 national literatures, the book gives full coverage to Indo-European poetries (all the major Celtic, Slavic, Germanic, and Romance languages, as well as other obscure ones such as Hittite), the ancient middle Eastern poetries (Hebrew, Persian, Sumerian, and Assyro-Babylonian), subcontinental Indian poetries (the widest linguistic diversity), Asian and Pacific poetries (Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Vietnamese, Mongolian, and half a dozen others), continental American poetries (all the modern Western cultures and native Indian in North, Central, and South American regions), and African poetries (ancient and emergent, oral and written).
