Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Stolen Bride: Or a Tale of Old Watch Hill The Stolen Bride. When the night descends dark and chill, I wander over old Watch Hill, - Wander around trying to trace Some long ago forgotten place. Strange sights do I see, strange sounds hear, Aye, sounds strange to an Indian's ear Who once roamed this land at will; His spirit hovers round it still, Trying to picture the spot once more As it was in the days of yore; As when our council fires did flame Ere to this haunt the pale face came; When these waters supplied the fish With which to fill our birchen dish, And from the woods we filled the same With deer and other smaller game; Gathered our wampum from the sand Which with the seaweed strewed the strand. 'Twas here we smoked the pipe of peace When for a time our warfare ceased; Here wigwams, the red man's abode, Decked the land whereon he strode - Strode proudly hill and vale around The Narragansett's hunting ground. A branch of that powerful tribe Once lived here, aye, lived, loved, fought and died. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: A hundred years ago, Watch Hill was known as the "Queen of Atlantic Resorts." Its once barren knoll was strewn with vast wooden hotels and open-air porticos and porches. Its snug cove, a port of entry for steamboats that ferried summer residents, was also the home port for a fleet of catboats that took passengers on daily excursions. Offering unparalleled bathing at the surf-ridden East Beach and the soft sands of Napatree Beach, Watch Hill was truly "by the sea." Yet, as with many maritime venues, Watch Hill and its sister communities up the Pawcatuck River always served as year-round homes to watermen of all sorts. Whaling captains once lived in Lotteryville, partyboat captains sailed down the Pawcatuck to meet passengers at the Watch Hill docks, and fishermen provided fresh fare from the river and sea. Ships were built and lives were lost, and a century of maritime industries have come and gone.

Book excerpt: After writing his epic novels and long short stories, Leo Tolstoy felt the need to retell the stories toid to him by the folk near Yasnaya Polyana. The simplicity, the vitality, and the abandon of the foik imagination was the source of the Greek plays and novels. The gods, heroes, demons, witches, fairies, birds, beasts and flowers in the folk tales of India, were the overflow from anonymous pool of imaginative literature of our people. I go to these sources again and again, in order to bring back the gift of laughter and tears, which is necessary in order to bear the yoke of pity that every writer must carry.
