Book The Stoic Moralists and the Christians in the First Two Centuries

Download or read book The Stoic Moralists and the Christians in the First Two Centuries written by Thomas Jordan and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-28 with total page 154 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Stoic Moralists, and the Christians, in the First Two Centuries: Being the Donnellan Lectures for the Year 1879-80, Preached in the Chapel of Trinity College, Dublin IN sending forth a Second Edition of this little book, I desire to mention that I have learned with much satis faction that many of the National School Teachers of the country have received it very kindly. Their appreciation of my notice of some of the great labourers in the schools of morals and philosophy, showed a sympathy with these subjects in a position very different, indeed, from that of the ancients, but still connected with youth and the formation of character. Such a Spirit in the teacher of an elementary school would probably, I would conceive, diffuse itself among his scholars; and its spread, I cannot but think, would be of far greater value to the youth in their after-life, than many of the subjects of his school course, on which he laboured very diligently and properly to earn result fees. Seeing the admitted failure of the ancient moralists, we are on the way, I trust, to value the vantage ground from which, in more favoured times, the principles of life and conduct may be taught. This book was released on 2019-11-21 with total page 902 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This landmark achievement in philosophical scholarship brings together leading experts from the diverse traditions of Western philosophy in a common quest to illuminate and explain the most important philosophical developments since the Second World War. Focusing particularly (but not exclusively) on those insights and movements that most profoundly shaped the English-speaking philosophical world, this volume bridges the traditional divide between 'analytic' and 'Continental' philosophy while also reaching beyond it. The result is an authoritative guide to the most important advances and transformations that shaped philosophy during this tumultuous and fascinating period of history, developments that continue to shape the field today. It will be of interest to students and scholars of contemporary philosophy of all levels and will prove indispensable for any serious philosophical collection.

Book Nietzsche and Classical Greek Philosophy

Download or read book Nietzsche and Classical Greek Philosophy written by Daw-Nay N. R. Evans and published by Lexington Books. This book was released on 2016-12-21 with total page 151 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nietzsche and Classical Greek Philosophy: Beautiful and Diseased explains Friedrich Nietzsche’s ambivalence toward Socrates, Plato, and Aristotle. Daw-Nay N. R. Evans Jr. argues that Nietzsche’s relationship to his classical Greek predecessors is more subtle and systematic than previously believed. He contends that Nietzsche’s seemingly personal attacks on his philosophical rivals hide philosophically sophisticated disputes that deserve greater attention. Evans demonstrates how Nietzsche’s encounters with Socrates, Plato, and Aristotle reveal the philosophical influence they exercised on Nietzsche’s thought and the philosophical problems that he sought to address through those encounters. Having illustrated Nietzsche’s ambivalence regarding Socrates, Plato, and Aristotle, Evans draws on Nietzsche’s admiration for Heraclitus as a counterpoint to Plato to suggest that the classical Greek philosophers are just as important to Nietzsche’s thought as their pre-Socratic precursors. This book will appeal to those interested in continental philosophy, ancient philosophy, and German studies.
