Book Swift the Book and the Irish Financial Revolution

Download or read book Swift the Book and the Irish Financial Revolution written by Sean D. Moore and published by JHU Press. This book was released on 2010-10-15 with total page 286 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Winner, 2010 Donald Murphy Prize for a Distinguished First Book, American Conference on Irish Studies Renowned as one of the most brilliant satirists ever, Jonathan Swift has long fascinated Hibernophiles beyond the shores of the Emerald Isle. Sean Moore's examination of Swift's writings and the economics behind the distribution of his work elucidates the humorist's crucial role in developing a renewed sense of nationalism among the Irish during the eighteenth century. Taking Swift's Irish satires, such as A Modest Proposal and the Drapier's Letters, as examples of anticolonial discourse, Moore unpacks the author's carefully considered published words and his deliberate drive to liberate the Dublin publishing industry from England's shadow to argue that the writer was doing nothing less than creating a national print media. He points to the actions of Anglo-Irish colonial subjects at the outset of Britain's financial revolution; inspired by Swift's dream of a sovereign Ireland, these men and women harnessed the printing press to disseminate ideas of cultural autonomy and defend the country's economic rights. Doing so, Moore contends, imbued the island with a sense of Irishness that led to a feeling of independence from England and ultimately gave the Irish a surprising degree of financial autonomy. Applying postcolonial, new economic, and book history approaches to eighteenth-century studies, Swift, the Book, and the Irish Financial Revolution effectively links the era's critiques of empire to the financial and legal motives for decolonization. Scholars of colonialism, postcolonialism, Irish studies, Atlantic studies, Swift, and the history of the book will find Moore's eye-opening arguments original and compelling.

Book Evolution the Financial REvolution

Download or read book Evolution the Financial REvolution written by and published by . This book was released on 2020-05-25 with total page 146 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Evolution: The Financial rEvolution; A simple guidebook demonstrating the concepts and workings of a fictional cooperative designed not to make profit but to save our world. It explains not only the need to reshape our society into an abundance economy, changing the whole way resources are managed, but also shows how easy it is for the people to take that decision into their own hands and bring about a new age to humanity. Capitalism and greed have come to rule our society and taken our world to the brink of calamity. Even though through the years, attempts have been made to bring about a semblance of balance within a system, again and again they fail and fall, because of greed, and the tool for it to rule. Money. But a solution exists, a new system, one free of the inequality, greed, corruption, and destruction that we have today, a world beyond money, beyond capitalism, a free world. Many know about its potential, great organizations exist expressing the need for it, but so far it seems a far-off dream, how can we move from here to there, it seems so big. Evolution shows that it isn't a dream but rather a choice and more, a need. Sadly, that choice to move beyond the corruption and destruction, and indeed our whole democracy has been controlled by the financial system and the greed that capitalism has spurned. Even though the possibility has existed for many years to move beyond the waste of our mother earth and the enslavement of ourselves, those with the ability to make change are caught within the corruptive web that money creates. Only the people can make change now, only they can see the need.In times past when our democracies have become corrupted, the people called forth a violent revolution, but those times are gone as they should be, violence should never be an answer. With politics manipulated by wealth, even well minded politicians hold no power. Political revolutions of the people, with great leaders, fail. In our system, in our time, with the world as it is, there is only one way to make that decision and legally and peacefully bring about that choice. A financial revolution. Join us now and be part of that choice as we explore the potential of a new world, a new way, and discover how easy it is for us to make change and move into a world of equality and sustainable abundance.

Book Brokerage and Networks in London s Global World

Download or read book Brokerage and Networks in London s Global World written by David Farr and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2022-03-31 with total page 360 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Londoner John Blackwell (1624-1701), shaped by his parents’ Puritanism and merchant interests of his iconoclast father, became one of Oliver Cromwell’s New Model Army captains. Working with his father in Parliament’s financial administration both supported the regicide and benefitted financially from the subsequent sales of land from those defeated in the civil wars. Surviving the Restoration, Blackwell pursued interests in Ireland and banking schemes in London and Massachusetts, before being governor of Pennsylvania. Blackwell worked with his son, Lambert Blackwell, who established himself as a merchant, financier and representative of the state in Italy during the wars of William III before being embroiled in the South Sea Bubble. The linked histories of the three Blackwells reinforce the importance of kinship and the development of the early modern state centred in an increasingly global London and illustrate the ownership of the memory of the civil wars, facilitated by their kin links to Cromwell and John Lambert, architect of Cromwell’s Protectorate, by those who fought against Charles I. Suitable for specialists in the area and students taking courses on early modern English, European and American history as well as those with a more general interest in the period.

Book The Digital Revolution in Banking Insurance and Capital Markets

Download or read book The Digital Revolution in Banking Insurance and Capital Markets written by Lech Gąsiorkiewicz and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2023-02-22 with total page 257 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The digital transformation of finance and banking enables traditional services to be delivered in a more effective and efficient way but, at the same time, presents crucial issues such as fast-growing new asset classes, new currencies, datafication and data privacy, algorithmization of law and regulation and, last but not least, new models of financial crime. This book approaches the evolution of digital finance from a business perspective and in a holistic way, providing cutting-edge knowledge of how the digital financial system works in its three main domains: banking, insurance and capital markets. It offers a bird’s-eye view of the major issues and developments in these individual sectors. The book begins by examining the wider framework of the subsequent analysis and over the next three parts, discusses the opportunities, risks and challenges facing the digitalization of these individual financial subsectors, highlighting the similarities and differences in their digitalization agenda, as well as the existing linkages and dependencies among them. The book clarifies the strategic issues facing the development of digital finance in these major subsectors over the coming years. The book has three key messages: that digital transformation changes fundamentally the way financial businesses operate; that individual trades have their own digitalization agenda; and that the state with its regulatory power and central banking and money has a particularly important role to play. It will be of interest to scholars, students and researchers of finance andbanking, as well as policymakers wishing to understand the values and limitations of new forms of digital money.

Book Money Power and Print

Download or read book Money Power and Print written by Charles Ivar McGrath and published by Associated University Presse. This book was released on 2008 with total page 254 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This collection gathers the expertise of scholars in several disciplines to examine the manner in which financial and economic arguments were expressed in pamphlets, broadsides, and longer works of literature in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, and to assess to what extent the political realities of the day were informed by these debates or, alternatively, shaped by that rhetoric. The contributors to the volume draw upon an extensive variety of contemporary sources and modern analyses of the formative years of the financial revolution to reexamine many of the existing conventional ideas about the relationship between money, power, and print, and to suggest that the subject is far more complex and interrelated than most studies up to now have indicated. Particular attention is paid to the fact that the financial revolution did not occur in London in isolation from the various regions of the British Isles." "The essays address the question of how money, power, and print influenced the contemporary emergence of a radically different public finance structure in the British empire and how retrospective understanding of the results have influenced historical readings of the texts and the events. A number of contributions offer detailed analyses of particular moments or structures in the reshaping of the public financial sphere, such as the parliamentary and pamphlet debate over the establishment of the Bank of England and proposals for a land bank as an alternative. Other essays focus on broader themes illustrative of larger trends during the period, such as the Scottish support for an expedition to Madagascar to take advantage of presumed pirate treasure on the island."--BOOK JACKET.

Book The Making of the Modern Corporation

Download or read book The Making of the Modern Corporation written by Carlo Taviani and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2022-06-01 with total page 261 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book traces the origins of a financial institution, the modern corporation, in Genoa and reconstructs its diffusion in England, the Netherlands, and France. At its inception, the Casa di San Giorgio (1407–1805) was entrusted with managing the public debt in Genoa. Over time, it took on powers we now ascribe to banks and states, accruing financial characteristics and fiscal, political, and territorial powers. As one of the earliest central banks, it ruled territories and local populations for almost a century. It controlled strategic Genoese possessions near and far, including the island of Corsica, the city of Famagusta (in Cyprus), and trading posts in Crimea, the Black Sea, the Lunigiana in northern Tuscany, and various towns in Liguria. In the early sixteenth century, in his Florentine Histories (Book VIII, Chapter 29), Niccolò Machiavelli was the first to analyze the relationship between the Casa di San Giorgio’s financial and territorial powers, declaring its possession of territories as the basis of its ascendancy. Later, the founders of some of the earliest corporations, including the Dutch East India Company (1602), the Bank of England (1694), and John Law’s Mississippi Company (1720) in France, referenced the model of the Casa di San Giorgio.
