Of particular interest are letters that describe the widespread Panic of 1837 and the resulting failure of many firms. Letters of their travelling agents report on the difficulty of travel in the SW United States and describe life in New Orleans, New York City, and Lebanon, N.Y. where the writer observed the Shaker community. Family news is interspersed, and the collection also contains descriptive letters from a sister who remained in Scotland. Bills of lading, copies of various price letters, invoices and accounts complete the collection. Correspondents include Daniel K. Stewart, Bryce Stewart, John Stewart, David Dunlop, Norman Stewart, Charles Oxley, William Oxley, John Oxley, John Walker and the firms of Robert & Williams, New York, Brander, McKenna & Wright, New Orleans, and Brander, Murray, & Gallagher, N.Y.
