Download or read book The Stereoscope and Stereoscopic Photography Classic Reprint written by Felix Drouin and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-07-19 with total page 194 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Stereoscope and Stereoscopic Photography Of the stereoscope and stereoscopic photo graphy has been published in this country since about 1860, when Sir David Brewster gave to the world his now historic work. The active revival of stereoscopy brings with it the need of a modern treatise on the subject, more adapted to the times than the book of thirty years ago; for if in optical knowledge but few strides have been made, in matters photographic our progress has been enormous. The present work is almost a'literal translation from Le Stereoscope et la Photo graphie Stereoscopique of M. Drouin, only a few alterations and interpolations having been made in the necessary anglification. The metric system was adopted by the author, and it has been deemed advisable in most instances not to convert into. Book Stereoscopic Photography

Download or read book Stereoscopic Photography written by Arthur W. Judge and published by Read Books Ltd. This book was released on 2013-04-16 with total page 388 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the first edition of this book was written there has been a good deal of progress in stereoscopy, notably in its commercial and scientific applications; there has also been a number of important developments in connection with the apparatus used for stereoscopic methods and photography. The present edition has been partly re-written and extended to bring it up to date in these respects; no less than 94 pages have been added for this purpose. Whilst amateur stereoscopic photography has not made any noticeable progress in this country, there is still an appreciable number of keen workers enthusiastically pursuing this fascinating branch of photography. On the Continent, however, there is much more interest taken by the amateur in this work. The use of commercial stereoscopic photographs has extended considerably in recent years and many travelers representing commercial firms now carry round a stereoscope and set of photographs to illustrate their firm’s products—instead of taking samples or flat photographs. One large electrical concern has found it profitable to have most of its spare parts photographed stereoscopically and the complete set of views sent to all its agencies in different parts of the world. Many of the earliest books, particularly those dating back to the 1900s and before, are now extremely scarce and increasingly expensive. Pomona Press are republishing these classic works in affordable, high quality, modern editions, using the original text and artwork.

Download or read book Grasping Shadows written by William Chapman Sharpe and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2017-08-04 with total page 400 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What's in a shadow? Menace, seduction, or salvation? Immaterial but profound, shadows lurk everywhere in literature and the visual arts, signifying everything from the treachery of appearances to the unfathomable power of God. From Plato to Picasso, from Rembrandt to Welles and Warhol, from Lord of the Rings to the latest video game, shadows act as central players in the drama of Western culture. Yet because they work silently, artistic shadows often slip unnoticed past audiences and critics. Conceived as an accessible introduction to this elusive phenomenon, Grasping Shadows is the first book that offers a general theory of how all shadows function in texts and visual media. Arguing that shadow images take shape within a common cultural field where visual and verbal meanings overlap, William Sharpe ranges widely among classic and modern works, revealing the key motifs that link apparently disparate works such as those by Fra Angelico and James Joyce, Clementina Hawarden and Kara Walker, Charles Dickens and Kumi Yamashita. Showing how real-world shadows have shaped the meanings of shadow imagery, Grasping Shadows guides the reader through the techniques used by writers and artists to represent shadows from the Renaissance onward. The last chapter traces how shadows impact the art of the modern city, from Renoir and Zola to film noir and projection systems that capture the shadows of passers-by on streets around the globe. Extending his analysis to contemporary street art, popular songs, billboards, and shadow-theatre, Sharpe demonstrates a practical way to grasp the "dark side" that looms all around us.
