Book Cohomology of Arithmetic Groups

Download or read book Cohomology of Arithmetic Groups written by James W. Cogdell and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-08-18 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book discusses the mathematical interests of Joachim Schwermer, who throughout his career has focused on the cohomology of arithmetic groups, automorphic forms and the geometry of arithmetic manifolds. To mark his 66th birthday, the editors brought together mathematical experts to offer an overview of the current state of research in these and related areas. The result is this book, with contributions ranging from topology to arithmetic. It probes the relation between cohomology of arithmetic groups and automorphic forms and their L-functions, and spans the range from classical Bianchi groups to the theory of Shimura varieties. It is a valuable reference for both experts in the fields and for graduate students and postdocs wanting to discover where the current frontiers lie.

Book Algebraic Topology Applications and New Directions

Download or read book Algebraic Topology Applications and New Directions written by Ulrike Tillmann and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on 2014-07-14 with total page 350 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume contains the proceedings of the Stanford Symposium on Algebraic Topology: Applications and New Directions, held from July 23-27, 2012, at Stanford University, Stanford, California. The symposium was held in honor of Gunnar Carlsson, Ralph Cohen and Ib Madsen, who celebrated their 60th and 70th birthdays that year. It showcased current research in Algebraic Topology reflecting the celebrants' broad interests and profound influence on the subject. The topics varied broadly from stable equivariant homotopy theory to persistent homology and application in data analysis, covering topological aspects of quantum physics such as string topology and geometric quantization, examining homology stability in algebraic and geometric contexts, including algebraic -theory and the theory of operads.

Book Cohomology of Number Fields

Download or read book Cohomology of Number Fields written by Jürgen Neukirch and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 1999-12-08 with total page 728 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Galois modules over local and global fields form the main subject of this monograph, which can serve both as a textbook for students, and as a reference book for the working mathematician, on cohomological topics in number theory. The first part provides necessary algebraic background: profinite groups and their cohomology, duality groups, free products, modules over complete group rings and their homotopy theory. The arithmetic part deals with Galois groups of local and global fields: local Tate duality, the structure of the absolute Galois group of a local field, extensions of global fields with restricted ramification, cohomology of the idèle and the idèle class groups, Poitou-Tate duality for finitely generated Galois modules, the Hasse principle, the theorem of Grunwald-Wang, Leopoldt's conjecture, Riemann's existence theorem for number fields, embedding problems, the theorems of Iwasawa and of Safarevic on solvable groups as Galois groups over global fields, Iwasawa theory of local and global number fields, and the characterization of number fields by their absolute Galois groups.

Book Eisenstein Cohomology for GLN and the Special Values of Rankin Selberg L Functions

Download or read book Eisenstein Cohomology for GLN and the Special Values of Rankin Selberg L Functions written by Anantharam Raghuram and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2019-12-03 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book studies the interplay between the geometry and topology of locally symmetric spaces, and the arithmetic aspects of the special values of L-functions. The authors study the cohomology of locally symmetric spaces for GL(N) where the cohomology groups are with coefficients in a local system attached to a finite-dimensional algebraic representation of GL(N). The image of the global cohomology in the cohomology of the Borel–Serre boundary is called Eisenstein cohomology, since at a transcendental level the cohomology classes may be described in terms of Eisenstein series and induced representations. However, because the groups are sheaf-theoretically defined, one can control their rationality and even integrality properties. A celebrated theorem by Langlands describes the constant term of an Eisenstein series in terms of automorphic L-functions. A cohomological interpretation of this theorem in terms of maps in Eisenstein cohomology allows the authors to study the rationality properties of the special values of Rankin–Selberg L-functions for GL(n) x GL(m), where n + m = N. The authors carry through the entire program with an eye toward generalizations. This book should be of interest to advanced graduate students and researchers interested in number theory, automorphic forms, representation theory, and the cohomology of arithmetic groups.

Download or read book Cohomology of Groups written by Kenneth S. Brown and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 318 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Aimed at second year graduate students, this text introduces them to cohomology theory (involving a rich interplay between algebra and topology) with a minimum of prerequisites. No homological algebra is assumed beyond what is normally learned in a first course in algebraic topology, and the basics of the subject, as well as exercises, are given prior to discussion of more specialized topics.

Book Cohomology Rings of Finite Groups

Download or read book Cohomology Rings of Finite Groups written by Jon F. Carlson and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-04-17 with total page 782 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Group cohomology has a rich history that goes back a century or more. Its origins are rooted in investigations of group theory and num ber theory, and it grew into an integral component of algebraic topology. In the last thirty years, group cohomology has developed a powerful con nection with finite group representations. Unlike the early applications which were primarily concerned with cohomology in low degrees, the in teractions with representation theory involve cohomology rings and the geometry of spectra over these rings. It is this connection to represen tation theory that we take as our primary motivation for this book. The book consists of two separate pieces. Chronologically, the first part was the computer calculations of the mod-2 cohomology rings of the groups whose orders divide 64. The ideas and the programs for the calculations were developed over the last 10 years. Several new features were added over the course of that time. We had originally planned to include only a brief introduction to the calculations. However, we were persuaded to produce a more substantial text that would include in greater detail the concepts that are the subject of the calculations and are the source of some of the motivating conjectures for the com putations. We have gathered together many of the results and ideas that are the focus of the calculations from throughout the mathematical literature.

Book Cohomology of Finite Groups

Download or read book Cohomology of Finite Groups written by Alejandro Adem and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-06-29 with total page 333 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The cohomology of groups has, since its beginnings in the 1920s and 1930s, been the stage for significant interaction between algebra and topology and has led to the creation of important new fields in mathematics, like homological algebra and algebraic K-theory. This is the first book to deal comprehensively with the cohomology of finite groups: it introduces the most important and useful algebraic and topological techniques, and describes the interplay of the subject with those of homotopy theory, representation theory and group actions. The combination of theory and examples, together with the techniques for computing the cohomology of important classes of groups including symmetric groups, alternating groups, finite groups of Lie type, and some of the sporadic simple groups, enable readers to acquire an in-depth understanding of group cohomology and its extensive applications.

This book was released on 2013-11-21 with total page 282 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It has been nearly twenty years since the first edition of this work. In the intervening years, there has been immense progress in the use of homological algebra to construct admissible representations and in the study of arithmetic groups. This second edition is a corrected and expanded version of the original, which was an important catalyst in the expansion of the field. Besides the fundamental material on cohomology and discrete subgroups present in the first edition, this edition also contains expositions of some of the most important developments of the last two decades.
