Book The Persistence of Sail in the Age of Steam

Download or read book The Persistence of Sail in the Age of Steam written by Donna J. Souza and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-06-29 with total page 222 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Archaeology Under Water (1966: 19), pioneer nautical archaeologist George Bass pointed out how much easier it is to train someone who is already an archaeologist to become a diver than to take trained divers and teach them to do archaeology. While this is 'generally true, there have also been occasions when well-trained and enthusiastic sport-divers have been willing to accept the train ing and discipline necessary to conduct good archaeological science, becoming first-rate scholars in the process. Dr. Donna Souza's book is the product of just such a transition. It shows how a sport-diver and volunteer fieldworker can proceed through a rigorous graduate program to achieve research results that are convincing in their own right and point toward new directions in the discipline as a whole. What is new in this book for maritime archaeology? Perhaps the most obvious and important feature of Dr. Souza's archaeological and historical analysis of the wreck at Pulaski Reef and its contemporaries in the Dry Tortugas National Park, Florida, is the way it serves as a means to a larger end---namely an understanding of the social history of the transition from sail to steam in late nineteenth century maritime commerce in America. The relationship between changes in technology and culture is a classic theme in anthropology, and this study extends ~t theme into the domain of underwater archaeology.

Book Shaver Huntington and Hume Lakes

Download or read book Shaver Huntington and Hume Lakes written by Steven D. Harrison and Michael J. Semas and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2014 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Sierra Nevada of Fresno County is rich in natural resources. Logging operations of the 19th century built dams and millponds, such as Hume Lake, sawmills, railroads, and two of the longest flumes in the world. In the 20th century, the Southern California Edison Company began the massive Big Creek Hydroelectric Project. It resulted in the creation of several lakes, including Shaver and Huntington, and a series of powerhouses for hydroelectric power. These lakes provided new venues for fishing and boating. Included here are epic stories told with historical postcards of logging, electricity, and leisure in the Central Sierra Nevada within Fresno County.

  • Pages : 130 pages

Download or read book Port Orchard written by Kitsap County Historical Society and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2012 with total page 130 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The town of Sidney was platted in 1886 by Frederick Stevens and contained a pottery works, shingle mill, and sawmill by 1889. The surrounding thick forests and lack of roads meant the area was accessible only by water. The year 1889 also saw the building of the first wharf, allowing numerous passengers and freight steamers of the Mosquito Fleet (so called because its numbers were said to resemble a swarm of mosquitoes) to stop at Sidney, thus facilitating the growth of the town. In December 1890, three months after Sidney's incorporation, the federal government approved Sinclair Inlet as the location for a Pacific Northwest shipyard. Early major developments determined the town's future: moving the county seat from Port Madison to Sidney, renaming the town Port Orchard, and locating the Washington State Veterans Home near Port Orchard.
