Book The Status of Middle and High School String Orchestra Programs in Virginia Public Schools Located in Midsized Urban Settings

Download or read book The Status of Middle and High School String Orchestra Programs in Virginia Public Schools Located in Midsized Urban Settings written by and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 98 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The majority of literature about teaching in urban settings has focused on the experiences of educators and students in large urban settings (Costa-Giomi, 2008; Fitzpatrick, 2008, 2011), and has been general classroom focused (Elpus & Abril, 2011; Glenn, 2005; McEachin & Brewer, 2012; Young, 2007). A smaller body of literature about teaching music classes in urban settings exists (Kinney, 2010; Bernard, 2010), while less still exists about the status of orchestra programs in urban settings (Fitzpatrick, 2011, Hamann & Gillespie, 1998; Smith, 1997). Little research examines midsize urban educational settings by state, and less still has examined the status of orchestra programs in midsized urban settings in Virginia. The purpose of this study was to examine the status of middle and high school string orchestra programs in Virginia public schools located in midsized urban settings. String orchestra directors (N = 30) were invited to complete an online survey of 26 questions. Nineteen of the orchestra directors participated. Fifteen participants completed the survey, while four surveys were incomplete. Individual data for study participant's responses to multiple choice and Likert scale responses were collected, compared and analyzed. Data for free-response questions were transcribed for each individual participant before being grouped according to observable grouped theme categories. Results of this study suggested participants possessed a high level of training (master's or doctorate degree), and reported having a high level of job satisfaction. With regard to ethnicity, 87% (n = 13) of the participants indicated that their own ethnicity was not reflective of the majority ethnicity of the student population with which they worked. A majority of the participants (66%) indicated that they had experienced some level of difficulty when recruiting students for their school's orchestra program. A number of shared themes were identified in the participants' free response transcriptions. Participants shared the values of showing respect to, caring for, and having high expectations for their students. Respondents emphasized being organized, and having classroom management skills. Other themes included the importance of having adequate and effective teacher preparation; access to instruments and other resources; and the support of parents, administrators, and colleagues.

Book A Case Study On Factors That Influence the Status of String Orchestra Programs in North Carolina Public Schools

Download or read book A Case Study On Factors That Influence the Status of String Orchestra Programs in North Carolina Public Schools written by LaSaundra Janelle Lindsey Booth and published by . This book was released on 2018 with total page 105 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over 1.5 million students are enrolled throughout the 244 school districts within North Carolina public schools (NC Department of Public Instruction, 2018). A recent survey by North Carolina Department of Public Instruction (2016) indicated that approximately 70% of students participate in music. Music included multiple forms of instrumental music such as band and orchestra, as well as vocal music such as chorus and show choir. While 70% of students participate in music, the specific enrollment in string orchestra programs as unclear. This action research study addressed the problem specifically concerning the status of string orchestra programs in North Carolina public schools. Understanding the status of string orchestra programs impacted all stakeholders including teachers, students, parents, and administrators. The purpose of this study was to identify best practice strategies that may contribute to the establishment of new string orchestra programs, as well as how improved recruitment and retention practices may increase enrollment in existing string programs. North Carolina Public School string teachers served as study participants. The research methodology was a qualitative case study. A questionnaire served as the primary sources of data collection. the results of the study indicated that the majority of string teachers are not the same ethnicity as their students. Results also indicated that many participants taught in schools with high populations of students from low-income families. These results are not typical of trends in existing literature. Since this study laid the groundwork to prove that trends in existing literature are not the same in North Carolina, future research may be conducted to follow the patterns of enrollment, recruitment, and retention of string orchestra programs in Title I schools.

Book High Musical Achievement in Underserved High School Band Programs

Download or read book High Musical Achievement in Underserved High School Band Programs written by Delton Marcus Brown and published by . This book was released on 2023 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although information is available detailing methods and strategies for high achievement in school band programs, very little is synthesized specifically addressing high schools in urban, inner-city, and other underserved student populations. This study explores the effects of cultural responsiveness, director-student relationships, and establishing and maintaining high standards on student motivation and overall program achievement. The data collected in this study originate from five Texas band directors in minority-majority programs where the school comprises a student population with over 60 percent eligibility for free and/or reduced lunch. These directors have all made significant achievements at the high school level in the state of Texas and have received recognition at the national level. For comparative purposes, all directors also maintain experience in the more affluent suburban situations. Furthermore, in most instances, the programs examined have shifted from being highly successful majority White suburban schools to now minority-majority urban program attempting to maintain or recapture past successes. These themes, while explicitly targeting urban/inner-city programs, are useful for band directors in all settings, as the strategies and methods examined may be effective in all high school band situations.

Book A Comparison of Teacher Preparation Resources and Students Continued College Music Study Between Urban and Non urban High School Band Programs in Tennessee

Download or read book A Comparison of Teacher Preparation Resources and Students Continued College Music Study Between Urban and Non urban High School Band Programs in Tennessee written by Charlie S. Edmonds and published by . This book was released on 2019 with total page 98 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to investigate the extent of high school band directors' preservice preparation for teaching in urban schools, as well as determine what disparities exist between band program resources in urban schools and non-urban schools. Participants (N = 27) were high school band directors in West, Middle, and East Tennessee who completed a researcher-designed questionnaire. The researcher collected information on the inclusion of topics on teaching minority students and low SES students, directors' perspectives on teaching minority students and creating culturally relevant instruction, and band program resources that promote student success. To measure student success, data were correlated with the number of music majors that had come from the high school band programs in the past three years. Results showed that the majority of band directors (93%) never or very rarely had topics included on teaching minority students in their undergraduate coursework, and 59% very rarely had topics included on teaching students from low socio-economic backgrounds. Most participants (70%) did not feel prepared to teach in urban schools, but were generally comfortable creating instruction relevant to the interests of minority students. Band resources by program demographics were unequal. Significant findings showed that band programs with fewer minority students had more students taking private lessons, more participation in ensembles outside of school, higher parental involvement in fundraising, more supplemental instructors, and received more student teachers than band programs with higher percentages of minority students. Band programs with more minority students had more students using school-owned instruments. Significant findings also showed that band programs with lower percentages of minority students had more students become music majors after high school.
