Book Extent and Status of the Forests in the Ugandan Albertine Rift

Download or read book Extent and Status of the Forests in the Ugandan Albertine Rift written by Andrew J. Plumptre and published by . This book was released on 2002 with total page 47 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Executive summary: This report summarises the current status and extent of forests in western Uganda in what is called the Albertine Rift. The report evaluates the relative importance of the larger forest reserves (those greater than 50 km2) for wildlife conservation and also evaluates the major threaves (those greater than 50 km2) for wildlife conservation and also evaluates the major threats that the forests currently face. A satellite image analysis shows the extent of forest cover in western Uganda based on satellite images from 1999-2002. The satellite analysis also compares forest loss since the mid 1980s in four areas of the rift and shows that most loss has occurred outside the forest reserves. The five forests that consistently rank high for biodiversity conservation are: Echuya Forest Reserve, Budongo Forest Reserve, Bugoma Forest Reserve, Kalinzu-Maramagambo Forests and Kasyoha-Kitomi Forest Reserve. The threats faced by the forests are various but are primarily due to the following human activities: 1. Encroachment for agricultural land; 2: Hunting for bushmeat; 3: Charcoal burning; 4: Timber harvesting (where it is illegal); 5: Mining. These threats are mapped for the larger forests in western Uganda and the relative intensities of the threats shown both between the forests and within the forest boundaries. More indirect threats to the forest are also discussed. Supporting the ability to control the illegal activities in these forests should be one of the main focuses of the GEF Albertine Rift project both through support to community management initiatives and also through support to law enforcement activities.

Book Biodiversity and the Precautionary Principle

Download or read book Biodiversity and the Precautionary Principle written by Rosie Cooney and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2012-05-16 with total page 337 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Great uncertainty typically surrounds decisions and management actions in the conservation of biodiversity and natural resource management, and yet there are risks of serious and irreversible harm for both biodiversity and the humans that rely on it. The precautionary principle arguably underlies all international conservation efforts and promotes acting to avoid serious or irreversible environmental harm, despite lack of scientific certainty as to the likelihood, magnitude or cause of harm. This book is the first to examine the application of the precautionary principle to biodiversity conservation and natural resource management, incorporating perspectives from scientists, economists, lawyers and practitioners from both developing and developed countries. It analyses the application and impacts of the principle in many areas including forestry, invasive alien species, wildlife trade, protected areas and fisheries, in a range of national and international contexts. Particular attention is drawn to issues of equity, livelihoods, science and politics, and the book provides guidelines for applying the precautionary principle to biodiversity conservation and natural resource management.

Book Closing the Knowledge Implementation Gap in Conservation Science

Download or read book Closing the Knowledge Implementation Gap in Conservation Science written by Catarina C. Ferreira and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2022-01-03 with total page 470 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book aims to synthesize the state of the art on biodiversity knowledge exchange practices to understand where and how improvements can be made to close the knowledge-implementation gap in conservation science and advance this interdisciplinary topic. Bringing together the most prominent scholars and practitioners in the field, the book looks into the various sources used to produce biodiversity knowledge - from natural and social sciences to Traditional Ecological Knowledge and Citizen Science - as well as knowledge mobilization approaches to highlight the key ingredients that render successful conservation action at a global scale. By doing so, the book identified major current challenges and opportunities in the field, for different sectors that generate, mobilize, and use biodiversity knowledge (like academia, boundary organizations, practitioners, and policy-makers), to further develop cross-sectorial knowledge mobilization strategies and enhance evidence-informed decision-making processes globally.

Book The Batwa Pygmies of the Great Lakes Region

Download or read book The Batwa Pygmies of the Great Lakes Region written by Jerome Lewis and published by Minority Rights Group. This book was released on 2000-06-01 with total page 36 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The conflicts in the Great Lakes sub-region of Africa, in particular the terrible genocide in Rwanda in 1994, have been reported on at length. However, little is known or written about one of the poorest and most vulnerable communities in the region, the Batwa Pygmies. Pygmies live in a considerable number of Central African countries. They are believed to be the original inhabitants of the equatorial forests of Central Africa. But the Batwa have been displaced and marginalized, first by incoming agriculturalists and pastoralists in the nineteenth century, subsequently, during the colonial period, by the advent of large-scale logging, and most recently by the establishment of game parks. The severe inter and intra-state conflicts of the past decade have undermined their livelihoods and culture even further. The Report focuses on the Batwa living in Burundi, eastern Democratic Republic of Congo, Rwanda and Uganda. It provides an historical account of the Batwa of the region and shows how they have sought to accommodate themselves to changing circumstances, describing their contemporary ways of life as potters and labourers, and their talents as performing artists. Most urgently, it examines the multiple ways in which their rights are violated and documents the ways in which Batwa are now mobilizing to defend and promote their rights. Please note that the terminology in the fields of minority rights and indigenous peoples’ rights has changed over time. MRG strives to reflect these changes as well as respect the right to self-identification on the part of minorities and indigenous peoples. At the same time, after over 50 years’ work, we know that our archive is of considerable interest to activists and researchers. Therefore, we make available as much of our back catalogue as possible, while being aware that the language used may not reflect current thinking on these issues.
