Download or read book Fundamentals and Practice in Statistical Thermodynamics written by Jianzhong Wu and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2024-08-20 with total page 773 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bridge the gap between thermodynamic theory and engineering practice with this essential textbook Thermodynamics is a discipline which straddles the fields of chemistry, physics, and engineering, and has long been a mainstay of undergraduate and graduate curricula. Conventional thermodynamics courses, however, often ignore modern developments in statistical mechanics, such as molecular simulation methods, cooperative phenomena, phase transitions, universality, as well as liquid-state and polymer theories, despite their close relevance to both fundamental research and engineering practice. Fundamentals and Practice in Statistical Thermodynamics fills this gap with an essential book that applies up-to-date statistical-mechanical techniques to address the most crucial thermodynamics problems found in chemical and materials systems. It is ideally suited to introduce a new generation of researchers and molecular engineers to modern thermodynamic topics with numerous cutting-edge applications. From Fundamentals and Practice in Statistical Thermodynamics readers will also find: An introduction to statistical-mechanical methods including molecular dynamics simulation, Monte Carlo simulation, as well as the molecular theories of phase transitions, classical fluids, electrolyte solutions, polymeric materials, and more Illustrative examples and exercise problems with solutions to facilitate student understanding Supplementary online materials covering the basics of quantum mechanics, density functional theory, variational principles of classical mechanics, intermolecular interactions, and many more subjects Fundamentals and Practice in Statistical Thermodynamics is ideal for graduate and advanced undergraduate students in chemical engineering, biomolecular engineering, environmental engineering, materials science and engineering, and all related scientific subfields of physics and chemistry.

Book Excluded Volume Effects in Polymer Solutions

Download or read book Excluded Volume Effects in Polymer Solutions written by Lothar Schäfer and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 554 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Schäfer gives a concise overview of the static equilibrium properties of polymer solutions. In the first part diagrammatic perturbation theory is derived from scratch. The second part illustrates the basic ideas of the renormalization group (RG). The crucial role of dilation invariance is stressed. The more efficient method of dimensional regularization and minimal subtractions is worked out in part three. The fourth part contains a unified evaluation of the theory to the one loop level. All the important experimental quantities are discussed in detail, and the results are compared extensively to experiment. Empirical methods of data analysis are critically discussed. The final (fifth) part is devoted to extensions of theory. The first three parts of this book may serve as the basis of a course. Parts four and five are hoped to be useful for detailed quantitative evaluations of experiments.

Book CRC Handbook of Thermodynamic Data of Polymer Solutions at Elevated Pressures

Download or read book CRC Handbook of Thermodynamic Data of Polymer Solutions at Elevated Pressures written by Christian Wohlfarth and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2005-01-27 with total page 652 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This handbook provides the only complete collection of high-pressure thermodynamic data that is essential for understanding polymer solutions. It contains data on vapor-liquid equilibria and gas solubilities, liquid-liquid equilibria, high-pressure fluid phase equilibria for polymer systems in supercritical fluids, enthalpic and volumetric data, as well as second virial coefficients all at elevated pressures. It covers all areas needed by researchers and engineers who handle polymer systems in supercritical fluids; materials science and technological applications such as computerized predictive packages; and chemical and biochemical processes, such as synthesis and characterization, fractionation, separation, purification, and finishing of polymers and related materials.

Book Macromolecular Chemistry

Download or read book Macromolecular Chemistry written by A D Jenkins and published by Royal Society of Chemistry. This book was released on 2007-10-31 with total page 474 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Specialist Periodical Reports provide systematic and detailed review coverage of progress in the major areas of chemical research. Written by experts in their specialist fields the series creates a unique service for the active research chemist, supplying regular critical in-depth accounts of progress in particular areas of chemistry. For over 80 years the Royal Society of Chemistry and its predecessor, the Chemical Society, have been publishing reports charting developments in chemistry, which originally took the form of Annual Reports. However, by 1967 the whole spectrum of chemistry could no longer be contained within one volume and the series Specialist Periodical Reports was born. The Annual Reports themselves still existed but were divided into two, and subsequently three, volumes covering Inorganic, Organic and Physical Chemistry. For more general coverage of the highlights in chemistry they remain a 'must'. Since that time the SPR series has altered according to the fluctuating degree of activity in various fields of chemistry. Some titles have remained unchanged, while others have altered their emphasis along with their titles; some have been combined under a new name whereas others have had to be discontinued. The current list of Specialist Periodical Reports can be seen on the inside flap of this volume.

Book Viscosity of Low Molecular Weight Polymer Solutions Over the Entire Concentration Range

Download or read book Viscosity of Low Molecular Weight Polymer Solutions Over the Entire Concentration Range written by Peter F. Lyons and published by . This book was released on 1968 with total page 25 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An empirical equation is presented which describes the concentration dependence of the viscosity of low molecular weight (2000) poly (propylene oxide) solutions over the whole concentration range. The basis for the new equation is a consideration of the finite volume of the polymer molecules in solution. The new empirical equation fits the data extremely well over the whole concentration range for both a very good solvent (benzene) and a somewhat poorer solvent (methylcyclohexane). The hydrodynamic consequences of the thermodynamic interactions between polymer and solvent are reflected in the constants of the equation. A qualitative physical interpretation of this excluded volume equation is based on the limited interpenetration of the hydrodynamic polymer coils. Using the Debye or the Rouse-Bueche (DRB) formulation for the viscosity of a polymer solution, the proposed equation also describes the relative variation of the segmental (or bead) friction factor from infinitely dilute solution to bulk polymer. A Stokes' law interpretation of the friction factor is shown to be reasonable at infinite dilution. (Author).
