Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Statesman and the Man: A Discourse on Occasion of the Death of Hon. John Quincy Adams The week that has passed since we were last assembled here has been one so marked with signal memories and events, that it would be impossible to leave it without notice. It is seldom that religion connects itself so distinctly both with our own thought and experience, and with the striking incidents of our nation's life. It is seldom that the associations of a single day, or a single week, have in them so much that presses solemnly upon the mind, and exalts it with a serious yet composed and joyful faith. The season, always greeted with the glad and loyal welcome of every patriotic heart, as the commemoration of the birth of our country's greatest man, has been rendered doubly memorable now, by the announcement which has made the nation's heart return in part from its fever-dream of war to the purer hope and glad anticipation of peace, and by the quiet and gentle departure from life of the most venerable and distinguished of our public men. This book was released on 2018-02 with total page 26 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Discourse Occasioned by the Death of the Hon. John Quincy Adams: Delivered in the Rowe Street Baptist Church, February 27, 1848 It would not be right to allow such an occasion to pass unimproved. It hath its voice. To give it then a tongue, is wise in us. In this event god speaks. Great men are his gifts. He raises them up to achieve the purposes of his wisdom and his goodness. The mind of capacious intellect, of great forecast, of nice discernment, connecting the faculty of patient attention to details with that of Splendid philosophical general ization, illumined by varied knowledge, united to a heart of tender sensibility and of lofty courage, endow ed with the love of truth, honor, rectitude, together with well-balanced powers of conception and execution, is one of the noblest objects of his creation; and the fitting combination of events to give it ample verge and scope is all of his ordering. The removal of such gifted men from the earth in the prime of life or in the culmination of their manly strength, is often spoken of in the sacred Scripture as a severe judgment on any people as was the case when the Prophet of God announced a nation's doom by the threatening, The Lord doth take away from Judah and Jerusalem the stay and the staff, the judge and the prophet, the pru dent and the honorable man, the counsellor and the eloquent orator for then, it is added, children shall be their princes, and the people shall be oppressed. When, therefore, we see a man, whom the people all delight to honor, in whose soul patriotism is an essential element of his inner life, whose tastes and gifts qualify him for high statesmanship, whose heart maintaineth its integrity, who walks upon the heights of power with serene self-command, who is unseduced by flattery and undazzled by bribes, who loves peace, and yet recoils not from the strife of stormy passions if the voice of duty call him to it, who blends with stern gigantic powers a sweet childlike simplicity, when we see such a man preserved to his country through times of trial, and yielding to her service the ardor of youth, the strength of manhood, the maturity of age, and at last, having passed beyond the bounds which have been set to the career of a mortal race, bowing cheerful assent to the majestic summons which bids him away from the scenes of his toil to a higher sphere of being, we cannot but acknowledge and adore the Providence which so long spared him to the world, and blessed his country with the priceless heritage of his character. Book Faith and Politics in America

Download or read book Faith and Politics in America written by Joseph Gilbert Prud'homme and published by Peter Lang Incorporated, International Academic Publishers. This book was released on 2011 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Faith and Politics in America explores the period from 1607 to the American Civil War. This book addresses the role of religion in the political process in early America, the extent to which religion influenced eighteenth century politicians and decision-makers, and how the founding fathers used religion in laying the foundations for a fair and just constitution. It also explores the meaning of the separation of church and state in the mind of many of the great political actors and thinkers in America in the early and late federal period and their views on traditional Christianity. The book traces how religion contributed to the success of subsequent political leaders, such as the founders of the Whig and Democratic parties, who claimed to be religious or to be adherents of a certain faith and who used religion as a guide to execute policies; and the role of religious faith in arguments over the institution of slavery before and during the Civil War. While exploring these topics from the time of the seventeenth through the nineteenth centuries, the essays included in Faith and Politics in America afford unique assessments of the American Revolution; the thought of Thomas Jefferson; the religious philosophy of James Madison; the life and thought of John Quincy Adams; the operation of the second party system; and religious debates over the acceptability of slavery immediately prior to the Civil War.

Download or read book A Discourse Occasioned by the Death of John Quincy Adams written by Theodore Parker and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-12 with total page 72 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Discourse Occasioned by the Death of John Quincy Adams: Delivered at the Melodeon in Boston, March 5, 1848 In nature we find individuals, not orders and genera: but for our own convenience in understanding and recollecting, we do a little violence to nature and put the individuals into classes. In this way we understand better both the whole and each of its parts. Human Nature furnishes us with indi vidual great men; for convenience we put them into several classes, corresponding to their several modes or forms of great ness. It is well to look at these classes before we examine any one great man; this will render it easier to see where he belongs and what he is worth. Actual service is the test of actual greatness; he who renders, of himself, the great est actual service to mankind, is actually the greatest man. There may be other tests for determining the potential great ness of men, or the essential; this is the Christian rule for determining the actual greatness. Let us arrange these men in the natural order of their work. First of all, there are great men who discover general truths, great ideas, universal laws, or invent methods of thought and action. In this class the vastness of a man's genius may be measured, and his relative rank ascertained by the tran scendency of his ideas, by the newness of his truth, by its practical value, and the difficulty of attaining it in his time, and under his peculiar circumstances. In Literature it is such men who originate thoughts, and put them into original forms, - they are the great men of letters. In Philosophy we meet with such, - and they are the great men of science. Thus Socrates discovered the philosophical method of minute analysis which distinguished his school, and led to the rapid advance of knowledge in the various and even conflicting Academies, which held this method in common, but applied it in various ways, well or ill, and to various departments of human inquiry; thus Newton discovered the law of gravitation, universal in Na ture, and by the discovery did immense service to mankind. In Politics we find similar, or analogous men, who discover yet other Laws of God, which bear the same relation to men in society that Gravitation bears to the orbs in heaven, or to the dust and stones in the street; men that discover the First Truths of Politics, and teach the true Method of Human Society. Such are the great men in Politics. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
